Hilarious, playful, and outright adorable…the book has an instantly uplifting effect that keeps you floating every time you remember it.” — Foluso Falaye, Readers' Favorite Five-Star Review Every dog deserves the happily ever after of a fairy-tale life, preferably without first being turned into a footman for a cucurbit carriage. After all, it’s no picnic getting post-midnight pumpkin slime out of those harder-to-reach furry places. (Not to suggest that pre-midnight slime is magically self-cleansing, at least not without the benefit of a wand-wielding godmother.) Yet, even servant to a fresh-off-the-vine conveyance beats the fate of many dogs. All too often, wonderful animals end up at the mercy of the evil queens, the wicked stepmothers, the big bad wolves, and other nefarious villains. The Sun Orbits My Dog is the lively narrative of three such animals—dogs who, by no fault of their own, had only experienced the cruel beginnings inflicted upon fairy tale protagonists. Maybe they’d dreamed of better days. Maybe they’d forgotten how to dream. Ultimately, however, they discovered true love—each adopted by a family that was neither evil nor wicked, neither bad nor nefarious, but decidedly eccentric and doggedly devoted. For Jake, Sadie, and Georgiana, this is where their waggly-tailed tales begin. Told in a style that is, at once, self-deprecating and humorous, poignant and relatable, former journalist J. B. Fitzgerald regales readers with twenty years of dog-parenting anecdotes: the laughter and excitement, the hardships and fears, and, of course, an array of comically undignified mishaps as she nurtures three very different souls through their unique challenges and watches them grow out of their sorrow and into infinitely happy and loving companions. This illustrated edition features more than 130 artistically displayed photographs. “...J.B. Fitzgerald’s warmth and affection for these companions can be felt in every sentence of this book...if ever there was a literary advocate for adopting a dog from your local shelter, it is The Sun Orbits My Dog...” — K.C. Finn, Readers' Favorite Five-Star Review

Book excerpt: Growing up in the suburbs of Boston and raised on secular Judaism, Cocoa Puffs, and Gilligan’s Island, Peter Bebergal was barely in his teens when the ancient desire to finding higher spiritual meaning in the universe struck. Already schooled in mysticism by way of comic books, Dungeons & Dragons, and Carlos Castaneda, he turned to hallucinogens, convinced they would provide a path to illumination. Was this profound desire for God—a god he believed that could only be apprehended by an extreme state of altered consciousness—simply a side effect of the drugs? Or was it a deeper human longing that was manifesting itself, even on a country club golf course at the edge of a strip mall? Too Much to Dream places Bebergal’s story within the cultural history of hallucinogens, American fascination with mysticism, and the complex relationship between drug addiction, popular culture, rock ‘n’ roll, occultism, and psychology. With a captivating foreword by Peter Coyote, and interviews with writers, artists, and psychologists such as Dennis McKenna, James Fadima, Arik Roper, Jim Woodring, and Mark Tulin, Bebergal offers a groundbreaking exploration of drugs, religion, and the craving for spirituality entrenched in America’s youth.

Book excerpt: Fiction. An astounding debut novel, written with courage, innovation, wisdom, style. Oisin Curran leads us onto a topology of narrative surfaces that appear and disappear seamlessly: subway terrorists in an urban density, a bucolic meadow and stream, postapocalyptic devastation, a ninth century abbey, forty-fifth century conspiracies. The narrative here allows one to enter the creative guts of storytelling, to experience it as a living force. Curran is like Beckett, Woolf, Joyce, Barnes, Bernhard, Celine, Faulkner, in whose work powerful prose excavates the ground of narrative itself, and exposes the sources and necessity of storytelling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was our planet like in years past? How has our civilization affected Earth and its ecology? Harvesting Space for a Greener Planet, the Second Edition of Paradise Regained: The Regreening of the Earth, begins by discussing these questions, and then generates a scenario for the restoration of Earth. It introduces new and innovative ideas on how we could use the Solar System and its resources for terrestrial benefit. The environmental challenges that face us today cannot be resolved by conservation and current technologies alone. Harvesting Space highlights the risk of humankind’s future extinction from environmental degradation. Population growth, global climate change, and maintaining sustainability of habitats for wildlife are all considered, among other issues. Rather than losing heart, we need to realize that the solutions to these problems lie in being good stewards of the planet and in the development of space. Not only will the solutions offered here avert a crisis, they will also provide the basis for continued technological and societal progress. Tapping the resources of near-Earth asteroids will lead to methods of diverting those asteroids that threaten Earth. Space-based terrestrial power generation systems will work synergistically with Earth-based conservation. This book needs to be read urgently and widely, if we are to save ourselves from environmental disaster, reduce the risk of catastrophic cosmic impacts, and build a prosperous and sustainable future for all the creatures of Earth.

Book excerpt: A hilarious new collection of razor-sharp observations from the New York Times bestselling author of Brain Droppings. Few comics make the transition from stage to page as smoothly or successfully as George Carlin. Brain Droppings spent a total of 40 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, and this new one is certain to tickle even more ribs (and rattle a few more cages) with its characteristically ironic take on life's annoying universal truths. In Napalm & Silly Putty, Carlin doesn't steer clear of the tough issues, preferring instead to look life boldly in the eye to pose the questions few dare to ask: How can it be a spy satellite if they announce on TV that it's a spy satellite? Why do they bother saying "raw sewage"? Do some people cook that stuff? In the expression "topsy-turvy," what exactly is meant by "turvy"? And he makes some startling observations, including: Most people with low self-esteem have earned it. Guys don't seem to be called "Lefty" anymore. Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it. Carlin also waxes wickedly philosophical on all sorts of subjects, including: KIDS--They're not all cute. In fact, if you look at them closely, some of them are rather unpleasant looking. And a lot of them don't smell too good either. DEATH ROW--If you're condemned to die they have to give you one last meal of your own request. What is that all about? A group of people plan to kill you, so they want you to eat something you like? Add to the mix "The Ten Most Embarrassing Songs of All Time," "The 20th Century Hostility Scoreboard," and "People I Can Do Without," and you have an irresistibly insouciant assortment of musings, questions, assertions, and assumptions guaranteed to please the millions of fans waiting for the next Carlin collection--and the millions more waiting to discover this comic genius.
