Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sun Dance of the Plains Indians: Its Development and Diffusion Most Plains tribes had the sun dance: in fact, it was performed by all the typical tribes except the Comanche. Since the dance has not been held for years by some tribes, viz., Dakota, Gros Ventre, Sutaio, Arikara, Hidatsa, Crow, and Kiowa, the data available for a comparative study vary widely in value. The chief sources of information outside of this volume are the accounts by G. A. Dorsey for the Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Ponca; Kroeber for the Arapaho and Gros Ventre; Curtis for the Arikara; and Lowie and Curtis for the Assiniboin. There is no published informa tion for the Fort Hall Shoshoni, Bannock, Kutenai, or Sutaio. So far as I am aware there has been no general discussion of the sun dance. Hutton Webster in his Secret Societies considers it, without giving proof, an initiation ceremony. It is the aim of the present study to reconstruct the history of the sun dance and to investigate the char acter of the factors that determined its development. By a discussion of the distribution of traits - regalia, behavior, ideas of organization, and explanatory myths - it will be Shown that the ceremony among all the tribes has grown chie y by intertribal borrowing. It will be demon strated further that the center of development has been in the central Plains among the Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Oglala, and that the original nucleus of sun dance rites probably received its first Specific character at the hands of the Arapaho and Cheyenne, or of this couple and the Village tribes. The character of transmission has been such as to produce a greater uniformity throughout the area in the distribution of regalia and behavior than of the ideas, organizing and mythical, associated with them. The corollary of this is that tribal individuality has been expressed principally in pattern concepts of organization and motiva tion. Since there is no difference in the character of borrowed or in vented traits which are incorporated in the sun dance and those which are rejected, it follows that the determinants must be sought in the conditions under which incorporation proceeds. It will be shown that the character of individual contributions to the ceremonial complex and the diversity in receptiveness and interest, explain in part the ela horation and individualization of the several sun dances. S., vol. 6, 1904, pp. 331 which while announced as a preliminary report has remained without a sequel. On my first visit to the Crow in 1907 I began to take notes on the Tobacco society and in the course Of subsequent visits succeeded in accumulating considerable material on the subject. The greater por tion of this information was secured at Lodge Grass, Montana; how ever, a fair amount Of check data was Obtained in other districts Of the Reservation. Continued investigation would surely have added to my knowledge Of detail, but it seems that the information here presented suffices to afford an understanding Of the essential principles underlying the organization. Book excerpt: Robert Lowie was born in Vienna in 1883, but came to the United States at a young age in 1893. He graduated from the College of the City of New York (A.B.) in 1901, and from Columbia University (Ph.D.) in 1908, where he studied under Franz Boas. In 1909, he became assistant curator at the American Museum of Natural History, New York. Influenced by Clark Wissler, Franz Boas, and others, Lowie became a specialist in American Indians. In 1917, he became assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley. From 1925 until his retirement in 1950, he was professor of anthropology at Berkeley, where, along with Alfred Louis Kroeber, he was a central figure in anthropological scholarship on American Indians. This book contains the complete The Sun Dance of the Crow Indians (1915) and The Religion of the Crow Indians (1922), two important primary sources on the Apsaalooke (Crow) people. As Paul Radin wrote in his obituary, "He was one of the best ethnographers of his day, and wherever time permitted, as in the case of the Crow, every aspect of culture was studied in detail. His Crow work and his investigation of the Plains societies are in a class by themselves. The latter study, for its completeness, its clear-cut recognition of the problems involved, and its admirable solution, has never been excelled." They met the Assiniboine, and were apparently also in more frequent contact with the Hidatsa than the Mountain Crow, so that certain societies, such as the Horse society and also one Crazy Dog organization, l are regarded as distinctive of the River Crow, who are said to have adopted them from the tribes mentioned. The many-lodges, according to all accounts, occupied approximately the terri tory including the present Crow reservation and adjoining regions, that is to say, southeastern Montana and part of Wyoming. The Fire-weasel couple define the territory of the many-lodges as bounded by the Tongue River on the east and the site of Livingston, Montana, on the west. Bull chief states that in the spring they ranged from the site of Buffalo, Wyoming, to the Pryor district, Montana, while in the winter they moved towards the Basin. The frarapi'o, according to this authority, joined the Many Lodges in the spring, but in the winter they went to the country of the Wyoming Shoshone. Maximilian seems to speak of the whole Crow tribe pasturing their horses along the Wind River in winter,2 but if the division into local bands antedates his journey,3 his informants presumably referred to the winter habitat of the Kicked-in-their-bellies band. There is no evidence that any dialectic differentiation took place among the three local groups. They were never at war with one another, but on some occasions temporary misunderstandings seem to have led to the composition of songs by one group deriding the members of another. As the name implies, the many-lodges were numerically preponderant, and the Crow employ the same term to designate the East as the principal dwelling-place of the whites. In answer to the direct question, whether a person belonged to his father's or his mother's local band, I received contradictory answers. In practice the problem probably never arose. The majority of marriages took place between members of the same band, and I am decidedly under the impression that affiliation with a band was simply a matter of residence.
