Book excerpt: Starting with the social and psychological side of the person Naipaul, one can summarise some reasonably simple discoveries that can be extracted from both his autobiographical pieces and his seemingly fictional books, published within a period of more than fifty years. Naipaul suggested that the way to approach the author is not through finding out as much as possible about the man and one could easily argue that the idea shall simply be used in conversion. One can learn more about the person when taking into account all that has been produced by the author, who is part of the person. By this means, one can extract valuable information about both person and author and thus can easily uncover some mysteries that have been established by the author/person to conceal the reality behind a fixed idea that has always played a significant role in Naipaul's life. Having studied English, Naipaul was aware of all the tools available and of the aims of literary critics and seems to have challenged these established routes for his own sake and to serve his purpose.

This book brings together a reasonably complete set of results regarding the use of Constraint Item estimation procedures under the assumption of accurate specification. The analysis covers the case of all explanatory variables being non-stochastic as well as the case of identified simultaneous equations, with error terms known and unknown. Particular emphasis is given to the derivation of criteria for choosing the Constraint Item. Part 1 looks at the best CI estimators and Part 2 examines equation by equation estimation, considering forecasting accuracy.

Book excerpt: This monograph gives a comprehensive treatment of spectral (linear) stability of weakly relativistic solitary waves in the nonlinear Dirac equation. It turns out that the instability is not an intrinsic property of the Dirac equation that is only resolved in the framework of the second quantization with the Dirac sea hypothesis. Whereas general results about the Dirac-Maxwell and similar equations are not yet available, we can consider the Dirac equation with scalar self-interaction, the model first introduced in 1938. In this book we show that in particular cases solitary waves in this model may be spectrally stable (no linear instability). This result is the first step towards proving asymptotic stability of solitary waves. The book presents the necessary overview of the functional analysis, spectral theory, and the existence and linear stability of solitary waves of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. It also presents the necessary tools such as the limiting absorption principle and the Carleman estimates in the form applicable to the Dirac operator, and proves the general form of the Dirac-Pauli theorem. All of these results are used to prove the spectral stability of weakly relativistic solitary wave solutions of the nonlinear Dirac equation.

With his masterful ability to convey the excitement and elegance of mathematics, author Boris Pritsker explores equations from the simplest to the most complex—their history, their charm, and their usefulness in solving problems. The Equations World bridges the fields of algebra, geometry, number theory, and trigonometry, solving more than 280 problems by employing a wide spectrum of techniques. The author demystifies the subject with efficient hints, tricks, and methods that reveal the fun and satisfaction of problem solving. He also demonstrates how equations can serve as important tools for expressing a problem's data, showing the ways in which they assist in fitting parts together to solve the whole puzzle. In addition, brief historical tours reveal the foundations of mathematical thought by tracing the ideas and approaches developed by mathematicians over the centuries. Both recreational mathematicians and ambitious students will find this book an ample source of enlightenment and enjoyment.

This book was released on 2020-12-22 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) is becoming a popular statistical framework in many fields and disciplines of the social sciences. The main reason for this popularity is that PLS-SEM can be used to estimate models including latent variables, observed variables, or a combination of these. The popularity of PLS-SEM is predicted to increase even more as a result of the development of new and more robust estimation approaches, such as consistent PLS-SEM. The traditional and modern estimation methods for PLS-SEM are now readily facilitated by both open-source and commercial software packages. This book presents PLS-SEM as a useful practical statistical toolbox that can be used for estimating many different types of research models. In so doing, the authors provide the necessary technical prerequisites and theoretical treatment of various aspects of PLS-SEM prior to practical applications. What makes the book unique is the fact that it thoroughly explains and extensively uses comprehensive Stata (plssem) and R (cSEM and plspm) packages for carrying out PLS-SEM analysis. The book aims to help the reader understand the mechanics behind PLS-SEM as well as performing it for publication purposes. Features: Intuitive and technical explanations of PLS-SEM methods Complete explanations of Stata and R packages Lots of example applications of the methodology Detailed interpretation of software output Reporting of a PLS-SEM study Github repository for supplementary book material The book is primarily aimed at researchers and graduate students from statistics, social science, psychology, and other disciplines. Technical details have been moved from the main body of the text into appendices, but it would be useful if the reader has a solid background in linear regression analysis.
