Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were performed on deep beams under a midspan load to determine the scaling of cracking and ultimate load-carrying capacities of beams failing in shear. Two types of scaling procedures were used, one in which only the geometries are scaled (replica of mach models), the other in which both geometry and material properties are scaled (dissimilar-strength or environmental models). The results of twenty simply supported beams tested statically with span-to-depth ratios of 4.67, 3.88, 2.80, and 2.00 and comprising 1/4- and 1/2-scale models and laboratory prototypes are presented. Two prototype beams with L/d ratios of 4.67 and 3.88 were tested dynamically to provide some correlation between statically and dynamically loaded beams. Test results indicate that cracking loads can be adequately predicted from both replica and dissimilar-strength models and ultimate loads can be predicted from replica models for all span-to-depth ratios tested. When transition from beam to arch action occurs, the dissimilar-strength models underpredict the ultimate load-carrying capacity of the prototypes. (Author).

Book excerpt: Reliable performance of beams and slabs in shear is essential for the safety and also for the serviceability of reinforced concrete structures. A possible failure in shear is usually a brittle failure, which underlines the importance of the correct specification of the load carrying capacity in shear. The knowledge of performance in shear is steadily developing and it is now obvious that older structures were not always designed in accordance with contemporary requirements. The increasing load – mainly on bridges – requires the assessment of existing structures, often followed by their strengthening. An appropriate understanding of actual performance of concrete structures in shear is therefore of primary interest. The workshop which was held in Zürich in 2016 brought together a significant number of outstanding specialists working in the field of shear design, who had a chance to exchange their opinions and proposals for improving the current knowledge of shear behaviour in beams and slabs. The specialists came from different parts of the world, which made the workshop general and representative. The workshop was organised by fib Working Party 2.2.1 “Shear in Beams” (convened by O. Bayrak), which is a part of fib Commission 2 "Analysis and Design". Individual contributions mainly address shear in beams with low transversal reinforcement. It is crucial because many existing structures lack such reinforcement. Different theories, e.g. Critical Shear Crack Theory (CSCT), Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT), Multi-Action Shear Model (MASM), etc. were presented and compared with procedures used in selected national codes or in the fib Model Code 2010. The models for shear design were often based to a great extent on empirical experience. The refined presented models tend to take into account the physical mechanisms in structures more effectively. A brittle behaviour in shear requires not only to check the equilibrium and failure load, but also to follow the progress of failure, including the crack development and propagation, stress redistribution, etc. The significance of the size effect – which causes the nominal strength of a large structure to be smaller than that of a small structure – was pointed out. Nowadays, the fibre reinforcement is used more than before since it allows significant labour costs savings in the construction industry. The contribution of fibres is suitable for shear transfer. It is very convenient that not only ordinary fibre reinforced elements were addressed but also the UHPFRC beams. The production of this new material is indeed growing, while the development of design recommendations has not been sufficiently fast. Fatigue resistance of structures with low shear reinforcement is also an important issue, which was also addressed in this bulletin. It cannot be neglected in prestressed bridges, which are exposed to dynamic loads. A comprehensive understanding of the shear behaviour is necessary. Although many laboratory experiments are carried out, they are suitable only to a limited extent. New testing methods are being developed and show promising results, e.g. digital image correlation. An actual structure performance should rather be tested on a large scale, ideally on real structures under realistic loading conditions.ii The papers presented in the bulletin are a basis for the discussion in view of the development of updated design rules for the new fib Model Code (MC2020), which is currently under preparation. fib Bulletins like this one, dealing with shear, help to transfer knowledge from research to design practice. The authors are convinced that it will lead to better new structures design of as well as to savings and to a safety increase in older existing structures, whose future is often decided now.

Book excerpt: An investigation of the use of models to predict shear failures of continuous reinforced concrete beams was conducted. The purpose of the investigation was to determine what similarity must exist between model and prototype to enable the prediction of the ultimate load of the prototype to be made on the basin of tests of the model. Two prototype beams, of different sizes, were tested. The beams, with tensile reinforcement only, loaded with concentrated load in the center of each span. Six model beams, in two different sizes, of each prototype were tested.

Book excerpt: The modelling of glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) reinforced, concrete beams was conducted by the author in the finite element analysis software ABAQUS. The study extended upon the work done by Joseph Stoner (2015) to calibrate the Concrete Damaged Plasticity (CDP) model, with the intent to ultimately complement laboratory testing in a research setting. Furthermore, current strength prediction methods for beams reinforced with fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) were evaluated against a database of tested beams collected from literature. The validity of the proposed ABAQUS models was assessed against selected beams from the database. Finally, a parametric study was conducted on 12 GFRP reinforced beams, over 12 slenderness ratios, to study the effects of slenderness. The database of tested beams consisted of beams that failed in shear, as tests on slender beams reinforced with FRP are scarce. The strength prediction models were therefore evaluated on their ability to predict shear capacity. The models included in the analysis are the CSA S806-12, the ACI440.1R-15, the Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE), and the Intelligent Sensing for Innovative Structures (ISIS) Canada Manual No. 3 shear models, as well as a prediction model proposed by Nehdi et al. (2007). The study concluded that Nehdi model most accurately predicts the shear capacity for beams with transverse reinforcement, with the remainder of the models providing very conservative values. For beams without shear reinforcement, all models provided good estimates for the shear capacity, with the CSA S806-12 model matching most closely to experimental data. The ABAQUS models proposed by Stoner were evaluated against a series of 8 beams taken from literature: two beams without shear reinforcement, and six with shear reinforcement. The results validated the recommendations made by Stoner, and verified the use of 30° dilation concrete to model beams without stirrups, and 50° dilation concrete to model beams with stirrups. Further research was deemed necessary to accurately model beams that exhibited both flexural crushing and stirrup rupture. The results of the parametric study suggested that the beams without shear reinforcement required large shear span to depth ratios to fail in flexure, exceeding ratios of 15. The beams with shear reinforcement failed in flexure at slenderness ratios approaching 10, demonstrating the increased shear strength provided by the stirrups. The increase in slenderness ratio required to fail in flexure (compared to steel reinforced beams) is attributed to the larger tensile strength of GFRP bars. Furthermore, an investigation into the shear capacity prediction methods of CSA S806-12 yielded that the model under-predicts the stirrup contribution to shear capacity. Further investigation determined the most likely cause was the modelling of the confinement induced by the stirrups.
