Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Introductory Lectures on the Study of Ecclesiastical History This is a brief but necessary sketch of the first part of our subject. This is the ancient period of Ecclesiastical History. Its full treasures must be unfolded hereafter. Its accessories belong to other departments of study. The critical interpretation of the sacred books in which the history is con tained falls under the province of general Theology and Exegesis; the explanation of the languages in which they are written I gladly leave to the Pro fessor of Hebrew and the Professor of Greek. But the history itself of the Chosen People, from Abra ham to the Apostles, belongs to this Chair by right and, if health and strength are spared to me, shall also belong to it in fact. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Critical Study of Ecclesiastical History: Attempted in an Account of the Progress, and a Short Notice of the Sources, of the History of the Church It can scarcely necessary to apologize to the English public for the appearance of a single volume, on a subject which has in Germany already been treated in several works. Since the publication of the Introduction to Ecclesiastical History by Sagittarius and Schmid in the beginning of the last century, Schorckh in the first volume of his Church-history, and C. W. F. Walch, Royko, Pfrogner, Flugge, and Staudlin, in separate works, have laboured to extend an acquintance with this branch of knowledge, and have rendered the literary history of church-history familiar to their countrymen. In the mean time no work of the kind has been undertaken among ourselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Studies in Ecclesiastical History and Biography The following Essays are reprinted, by the kind per mission of the Editor, from.the Saturday Review, with some corrections and additions, and the occasional omis sion of matter of merely temporary interest. In one or two cases portions of different articles bearing on the same subject have been incorporated. It was of course inevitable in dealing, under the necessary limitations of space, with themes of wide and varied import, on many of which whole volumes might be written, that a method of treatment should be adopted suggestive rather than exhaustive, with a view to bringing out the salient points, and thus refreshing the memory or stimulating the minds of those who may lack leisure or opportunity for more serious study. And in a busy and restless, which is also a reading age, but is somewhat apt to regard a great book, as a great evil, the author ventures to hope that to many readers such aids to their own reflection may prove not unacceptable. But, if I may be permitted to refer to the labours of the eminent scholar who has already done so much for elucidating in this country the nature of Oriental religions, it is to be hoped that Professor Max Muller may be induced to give us the benefit of his genius and learning in drawing forth the mutual relations of the religionsofasiaandthechristianfaithtoeachother, in meir past history and in their future prospects.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Study of Church History As the title indicates, this volume is intended to be a guide to students. It is not designed to take the place of larger works or render lecturing unnecessary, but to be a guide to the best known manuals and a basis for lecturing. The effort has been made to present the essentials of church history in a form so compact as to appeal to the eye and be easily remembered, and at the same time to direct the student to wider reading on the various subjects. For this purpose, four of the best known manuals, representing different confessional view-points, those of Newman (Baptist), Hurst (Methodist), Kurtz (Lutheran) and Alzog (Catholic), have been selected for constant reference, with occasional references to Schaff, Moeller and other works. No attempt has been made to refer to a wide range of works. The student who is passing through the vast field of Church History for the first time can find enough to do with the references given. As he advances he can easily enlarge his bibliography. In order to secure brevity there have been frequent abbreviations of words and condensations of sentences, but it is believed that no obscurity has resulted. The needs of students in theological seminaries have been steadily in mind, but it is hoped that others may find the work of value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Ecclesiastical History I proceed now to consider the ends which may be answered by ecclesiastical history, and to inquire what is the readiest and most profitable way of studying it. Before that memorable era, the incarnation of the Son of God, the history of the church of God was the history of one particular people, first distinguished by the name of the patriarch Israel, (otherwise called jacob) whose descendants they were and after the loss of the ten tribes, who were carried into captivity by Shalma nezer, king of Assyria, denominated from Judah, one of the sons of Jacob, and one whose progeny the greater part of the remnant were, the nation of the Jews. The history of that mph, and the history of the church, was under the Mosaick economy the same thing. Neither do we find in the annals, and other remains of those ancient. Times, the least vestige of the distinction of a community into church and state, such as hath obtained universally in the nations who have received the christian law. This distinction hath given rise to a speciesof history, whereof the world before had not conceived so much as an idea. It may not therefore be improper, in the first place, to trace its origin, that we may the better apprehend what is meant by the history of the church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Church History The present volume is made up of a number of essays and reviews Which have already been published in the pages of The Catholic World. They are for the most part summaries of important volumes on Church History and synopses of important articles in some of the leading French encyclopedias. Many of the questions discussed in these pages are continually being asked, ' by earnest seekers after the truth, through the medium of the Question Box on the Paul ist missions to non-catholics. Yet amidst all this they were not left without the hope of remedy. Prophecy had foretold the appearance of a Deliverer strong and mighty. So glorious the event to which these holy oracles pointed, that no language was too strong, no figures were too hold, no colouring too high, to repre sent the character of Museum 'rms Parana. He was to come with the sword upon his thigh - riding from eon quering to conquer - his own arm was to bring salvation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Early Church History The period of which these studies treat extends from the time of Christ to the reign of Constantine, the first Christian Roman Emperor. This era has been called, The Heroic Age of the Church It was during these three hundred years that Christianity encountered the bitter hostility of the Roman and Greek religions and systems of philosophy and was under the ban of the civil power. It was then that it formulated its doctrines, set forth its principles, wrote its New Testament books and endured its fiery persecutions. In the enthusiasm and freshness of their faith, its converts dared all things; no tasks were too hard, no hardships too great and no tortures too painful, when called for in the name of Jesus Christ, the Lord and Saviour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Modern Church History In placing this book in the hands of its publishers 1 hope to be regarded as showing my appreciation of the courtesy and kindness of the successive classes to which the lectures were delivered, in calling for their publication, as well as of the very gratifying manner in which this request was so re peatedly conveyed to me. I wish also in this way to indi cate the gratification I feel in recalling the gentlemanly bear ing of each class towards one whose only claim to their consideration was a sincere desire to be of service. The lectures were first delivered while Dr. T. J. Morgan was Professor of Church History in the Seminary; but chiefly since that important chair has been occupied by Dr. E. B. Hulbert. To both these gentlemen my thanks are due for the privilege of thus sharing with them in their work. It will not be improper, I trust, for me to speak of the special attention given by Dr. Hulbert to the department of church history treated of in these pages, and of the marked interest his students show in those aspects of historical Christianity which concern the church and the world as they now are. Under the leadership of President Northrup the Seminary is adapting its course of study in many ways to the peculiar needs of the present time, and in the particular here alluded to by no means least of all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ecclesiastical History of Eusebius: The First Book and Selections, Edited for Schools and Colleges The whole of Eusebius's Ecclesiastical History is too much for a text-book. These selections relate mainly to the early period, to the lives of the apostles and other persons mentioned in the Bible, to the history of the apostolic or other inspired writings, the fate of Je rusalem, the great persecutions, the acts of martyrs, andthe life and manners Of the early ages. What the Church treasured up on these subjects is of interest to all men, and a knowledge of them comes home to the business and bosoms of all thoughtful members of a Christian community. It would seem that the study of them in the admirable language in which they were originally recorded might help to make our college graduates not only learned in the Greek language, but stout-hearted men, ready to work and suffer for the truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Church, Vol. 1 of 3 It gives the translators great pleasure to be able to place within reach of the English-speaking community, and the student of theology, the classical text-book of Church History of the Rev. John alzoe, D.D., Professor of Theology at the University of Freiburg. The want of such a book has been long felt and much deplored bv scholars generally, and by educators in particular. These acknowledge that Church History is, for the theologian, not simply a very valuable aid, but rather an independent science, and the foundation of his other ecclesiastical studies; and that even the profane historian, the jurist, the statesman, the man of letters, the artist, the philosopher, can not, for evident reasons, dispense with it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Early Church History: Collected Papers Out of this earlier work I have had to try and preserve what seemed worth preserving, and at the same time to pro duce a more or less homogeneous volume. The title I have chosen indicates that the common thread which binds these papers together is that they all deal with various aspects of the history of the primitive Church, textual and critical details having been as far as possible relegated to the appendices. The late Dr. William Bright, Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History, generously paid me to lecture as his assistant, from 1888 till his death in 1901, on the ante-nicene period.
