Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Students Handbook of Comparative Grammar: Applied to the Sanskrit, Zend, Greek, Latin, Gothic, Anglo-Saxon, and English Languages Comparative Grammar treats of several languages in conjunction. It explains what has become obscure in one by that which remains intelligible in others. It is thus enabled to trace the origin of grammatical forms, and to illustrate the nature of language itself more fully and satisfactorily than could be done by the investigation of any one language separately. Lord Bacon judged that to be the noblest form of grammar which should compare the properties of many tongues, 'both learned and vulgar, ' and so attain to a perfect system - as Apelles shaped his Venus, not according to one model, but from the separate beauties of many individuals. No linguist, however, appeared for centuries to carry out this idea. Little was done until the discovery and study of Sanskrit literature gave the impulse and supplied the materials for those works upon the subject which have appeared in Germany during the last thirty years. Book excerpt: The study of classical languages by earlier generations of English-speaking students was greatly facilitated by the study of English grammar in the schools, a tradition now out of favor but one that emphasized precisely the concepts, terms, and constructions needed for the study of Greek and Latin. A Student Handbook of Latin and English Grammar offers a student-friendly comparative exposition of English and Latin grammatical principles that will prove a valuable supplement to a wide range of beginning Latin textbooks as well as a handy reference for those continuing on to upper-level courses.

Book excerpt: The study of classical languages by earlier generations of English-speaking students was greatly facilitated by the study of English grammar in the schools, a tradition now out of favor but one that emphasized precisely the concepts, terms, and constructions needed for the study of Greek and Latin. Recent classical language textbooks, while presuming little or no grammatical sophistication on the part of their students, often provide little more by way of remediation than definitions of grammatical terminology. A Student Handbook of Greek and English Grammar offers a student-friendly comparative exposition of English and ancient Greek grammatical principles that will prove a valuable supplement to a wide range of beginning Greek textbooks as well as a handy reference for those continuing on to upper-level courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently grammars of English have received surprisingly little scholarly attention, while a lot of research is done on dictionaries. It appears, however, that learners of English shy away from modern grammars and prefer to consult dictionaries or traditional reference grammars instead. This raises questions as to the relationship between theoretical linguistics and grammar writing and calls for more research into this area, especially for the period from 1800 onwards, which was crucial for the development of grammatical thinking and its acceptance (or rejection) at all educational levels today. This volume brings together work from international experts on the historiography of English grammar writing who deal with a variety of topics grouped into three overlapping sections: I. Native Grammars of English, II. Non-native Grammars of English, and III. Grammatical Analyses. The volume includes summaries of the articles and a name index.
