External geological agencies: The work of the weather. The work of ground water. Rivers and valleys. River deposits. The work of glaciers. The work of the wind. The sea and its shores. Offshore and deep-sea deposits -- Part II. Internal geological agencies: Movements of the earth's crust. Earthquakes. Volcanoes. Underground structures of igneous origin. Metamorphism and mineral veins -- Part III. Historical geology: The geological record. The pre-Cambrian systems. The Cambrian. The Ordovician and Silurian. The Devonian. The Carboniferous. The Mesozoic. The Tertiary. The Quaternary. Geology is a science of such rapid growth that no apology is expected when from time to time a new text-book is added to those already in the field. The present work, however, is the outcome of the need of a text-book of very simple outline, in which causes and their consequences should be knit together as closely as possible, --a need long felt by the author in his teaching, and perhaps by other teachers also. The author has ventured, therefore, to depart from the common usage which subdivides geology into a number of departments, --dynamical, structural, physiographic, and historical, --and to treat in immediate connection with each geological process the land forms and the rock structures which it has produced. It is hoped that the facts of geology and the inferences drawn from them have been so presented as to afford an efficient discipline in inductive reasoning. Typical examples have been used to introduce many topics, and it has been the author's aim to give due proportion to both the wide generalizations of our science and to the concrete facts on which they rest. There have been added a number of practical exercises such as the author has used for several years in the class room. These are not made so numerous as to displace the problems which no doubt many teachers prefer to have their pupils solve impromptu during the recitation, but may, it is hoped, suggest their use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of GeologyGeology deals with the rocks of the earth's crust. It learns from their composition and structure how the rocks were made and how they have been modified. It ascertains how they have been brought to their present places and wrought to their vari ous topographic forms, such as hills and valleys, plains and mountains. It studies the vestiges which the rocks preserve of ancient organisms which once inhabited our planet. Geology is the history of the earth and its inhabitants, as read in the rocks of the earth's crust. To obtain a general idea of the nature and method of our science before beginning its study in detail, we may visit some valley, such as that illustrated in the frontispiece, on whose sides are rocky ledges. Here the rocks lie in horizontal layers. Although only their edges are exposed, we may infer that these layers run into the upland on either side and underlie the entire district; they are part of the foundation of solid rock which everywhere is found beneath the loose materials of the surface.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Geology, With an Outline of the Geology of North Carolina: For the Use of the Students of the University The substance of the following treatise, has been read for some years to the senior class in the University, but this mode of acquiring a knowledge of the science not being satisfactory, the book has been printed for their use, and is as large and full, as in the time allotted to this subject, can be studied with much effect. As the successive les sons are illustrated in the lecture room, by the necessary plates and figures, none of these have been introduced; but as these elements may find a few readers beyond the college walls, a map, exhibiting the position and extent of the different rock formations of North Caro lina has been attached. It is only when the cultivators of this science shall have been greatly multiplied, and there shall be men in all parts of the country prepared to traverse it in every direction, and verify every fact laid down by them, by repeated examinations, that the geology of the State will be minutely and accurately known. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Geology The meaning and scope of geology. - Geology has to do with the history of the earth and of its inhabitants. Its field is so broad that for the sake Of convenience and specialized study it has been divided into numerous branches. Geology is concerned with the different members of the solar system and with other heavenly bodies in so far as they yield evidence as to the origin of the earth, or affect the activities now in progress upon it. This division of the general subject is some times called Astronom'ic Geology, and is related closely to the science of Astronomy. The processes and agents at work changing the earth must be studied carefully by the geologist, for they are shaping the present chapter in the history of the earth, and an understanding of them affords also a key by which much of its earlier history, recorded in the rocks, may be read. This phase of the subject is Dynamic Geology, and it has common ground with the special science of Physi ography or Physical Geography, with Meteorology, the science of the atmosphere, and with other sciences. The study of the remains and impressions 'of the plants and animals of past ages that are found in the' rocks is Paleontology; it is really the historical side of Botany and Zoology. Structural Geol ogy is concerned with the arrangement of the materials of the earth. That branch of geology which deals with minerals is Mineralogy, that which studies rocks is Petrology; both are connected closely with Chemistry. There are still other divisions of geology, but the ones mentioned are chief, and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But the effort has been made to draw less on the writers of text books than on original sources. To his publishers, his indebtedness and that of the public is great, for that intelligent liberality which has prompted them to demand, regardless of cost, the best style of graphic illustration, and a perfection of mechanical execution which will scarcely be found surpassed. Download or read book The Student's Elements of Geology written by Charles Lyell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Elements of Geology Between the years 1888 and 1855 I published six editions of the 'Elements of Geology,' beginning with a small duodecimo volume, which increased with each successive edition, as new facts accumulated, until in 1865 it had become a large and somewhat expensive work. When a seventh edition was called for, I was strongly urged by my friends to attempt to bring the book back again to a size more approaching the original, so that it might be within the reach of the ordinary student. In order to do this I resolved, in the first placo, to omit some theoretical discussions which belonged more properly to my 'Principles of Geology,' and further to confine myself to examples of British rocks, wherever this could be done; only seeking foreign illustrations when, as in the case of the Upper Miocene or Falunian Tertiaries, no good representatives were to be found in this country. I therefore published in 1871 what was substantially a new work under the title of 'The Student's Elements of Geology,' and the success of the attempt has been proved by the steady demand which has exhausted an unusually large edition in less than three years. The present work has been carefully revised and corrected, with the addition of such new matter as the plan of the volume permitted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alphabet of Geology and Elements of Mineralogy: A Treatise Designed for Students at School or at Home, and Especially Adapted to the Advanced Classes of the Common Schools The climate, soil and productions of the different countries are so varied, that we naturally expect the rocks to differ, but we find Wonderful uniformity everywhere. We find the upheaved granite and all other primary rocks the same in Europe, Asia and Africa, as in America; and the deposits of the precious metals are about equally accessible to all the inhabitants of the globe; iron, coal and the other useful minerals are very abundant.
