Classification in many cases is given. This work generalizes Droste's classification of the countable k-transitive trees (k>1). In a CFPO, the structure can branch downwards as well as upwards and can do so repeatedly (though it never returns to the starting point by a cycle). Mostly it is assumed that k>2 and that all maximal chains are finite. The main classification splits into the sporadic and skeletal cases. The former is complete in all cardinalities. The latter is performed only in the countable case. The classification is considerably more complicated than for trees and skeletal CFPOs exhibit elaborate and rather surprising behaviour.

One method constructs Hopf orders using isogenies of commutative degree 2 polynomial formal groups of dimension $n$, and is built on a systematic study of such formal group laws. The other method uses an exponential generalization of a 1992 construction of Greither. Both constructions yield Raynaud orders as iterated extensions of rank $p$ Hopf algebras; the exponential method obtains all Raynaud orders whose invariants satisfy a certain $p$-adic condition.

Holding the ten classical integrals of energy, center of mass, linear and angular momentum fixed defines an eight dimensional submanifold. For fixed nonzero angular momentum, the topology of this manifold depends only on the energy. This volume computes the homology of this manifold for all energy values. This table of homology shows that for negative energy, the integral manifolds undergo seven bifurcations. Four of these are the well-known bifurcations due to central configurations, and three are due to 'critical points at infinity'. This disproves Birkhoff's conjecture that the bifurcations occur only at central configurations.

The author finds that the dominant exponential term is classical and depends only on the Riemannian distance function. The second exponential term is a work term and also has classical meaning. There is also a third non-negligible exponential term which blows up. The author finds an expression for this third exponential term which involves a random translation of the index form and the equations of Jacobi fields. In the process, he develops a method to approximate the heat kernel to any arbitrary degree of precision.

Book excerpt: The trace formula is the most powerful tool currently available to establish liftings of automorphic forms, as predicted by Langlands principle of functionality. The geometric part of the trace formula consists of orbital integrals, and the lifting is based on the fundamental lemma. The latter is an identity of the relevant orbital integrals for the unit elements of the Hecke algebras. This volume concerns a proof of the fundamental lemma in the classically most interesting case of Siegel modular forms, namely the symplectic group $Sp(2)$. These orbital integrals are compared with those on $GL(4)$, twisted by the transpose inverse involution. The technique of proof is elementary. Compact elements are decomposed into their absolutely semi-simple and topologically unipotent parts also in the twisted case; a double coset decomposition of the form $H\backslash G/K$--where H is a subgroup containing the centralizer--plays a key role.

Book excerpt: Exceptional complex Lie groups have become increasingly important in various fields of mathematics and physics. As a result, there has been interest in expanding the representation theory of finite groups to include embeddings into the exceptional Lie groups. Cohen, Griess, Lisser, Ryba, Serre and Wales have pioneered this area, classifying the finite simple and quasisimple subgroups that embed in the exceptional complex Lie groups. This work contains the first major results concerning conjugacy classes of embeddings of finite subgroups of an exceptional complex Lie group in which there are large numbers of classes. The approach developed in this work is character theoretic, taking advantage of the classical subgroups of $E_8 (\mathbb C)$. The machinery used is relatively elementary and has been used by the author and others to solve other conjugacy problems. The results presented here are very explicit. Each known conjugacy class is listed by its fusion pattern with an explicit character afforded by an embedding in that class.

The 1950s saw the first real impetus given to the development of the qualitative theory of quadratic vector fields, although prior and ongoing interest in the topic can be shown by the more than 800 papers that have been published on the subject. One of the problems in the qualitative theory of quadratic vector fields is the classification of all structurally stable ones: In this work the authors solve this problem completely modulo limit cycles and give all possible phase portraits for such structurally stable quadratic vector fields.
