Book excerpt: An analytical study was carried out for the structural performance assessment of precast-concrete, short-span, skewed bridges with integral abutment walls. Typically, these structures are designed as simplified two-dimensional rigid portal frames, neglecting the degrading effects of the skew angle and laterally unsymmetrical vertical loading. This design practice produces under-designed bridges for certain aspect ratios, causing cracking and local deterioration symptoms, observed in some instances out in the field. To evaluate the limitations of this practice, three-dimensional finite-element models were developed and analyzed. Accordingly, these finite-element models simulate various geometric configuration parameters, as well as, laterally symmetrical and unsymmetrical vertical load conditions, capturing the amplification of the structural response. Field-testing was also performed on a bridge to substantiate and calibrate the finite-element results. The results of the simplified plane frame analyses and three-dimensional finite-element analyses were presented in correlation diagrams, enabling simple comparison and quantification. The correlation diagrams provide correction factors to amend the simple frame design. The response observations offer a qualitative insight into the actual behavior of the structure, allowing the performance assessment of existing bridges of the same type and a more reliable design in the future.

Book excerpt: Due to advances in computing in the late 20 th century, it is now possible to create three-dimension nonlinear analytical models of structures. These models provide the capability of modeling the system as a whole and can lead to more accurate predictions of the system's ultimate capacity. Before these three-dimensional modeling techniques can become common place design tools, the accuracy of the models must be verified by comparing their modeling results to data from full-scale experiments in which structural systems are loaded to failure. To add to the engineering community's knowledge of the ultimate capacity of bridges, the University of Delaware and the Delaware River Bridge Authority have plans to perform destructive testing of a single span simply-supported skewed bridge (Bridge 7R). In preparations for the destructive test, three-dimensional non-linear finite element (FE) models were created to predict the ultimate capacity of the bridge (Ross, 2007). In order to evaluate the performance of existing FE models, a 1/5-scale model bridge was constructed and tested to its ultimate capacity. The results of the test showed that the assumption of a linear elastic concrete deck gave the FE model a greater stiffness and ultimate capacity. In order to predict the ultimate capacity, an advanced concrete model that allows for deterioration must be implemented. A unique aspect of Bridge 7R is that its supports are skewed in excess of 60 degrees. This provides a unique opportunity to observe how skew effects influence the ultimate capacity of the structure. To investigate the effects of skew on bridge performance, a parametric study using FE models was also performed. The results of the study showed that the ultimate capacity of a bridge increases as skew increases. Also, the reaction forces at the obtuse corners increase with increased skew. These phenomena occur due to the difference in stiffness across the width of the bridge at the supports.

Book excerpt: Many highway bridges are skewed and their behavior and corresponding design analysis need to be furthered to fully accomplish design objectives. This project used physical test and detailed finite element analysis to better understand the behavior of typical skewed highway bridges in Michigan and to thereby develop design guidelines and tools to better assist in routine design of these structures. It is found herein that the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications' distribution factor analysis method is generally acceptable but overestimates the design moment for the typical Michigan skewed bridge spans analyzed herein and sometimes underestimates the design shear. Accordingly, a modification factor for possible shear underestimation based on detailed finite element analysis is recommended for routine design. Furthermore, the AASHTO specified temperature load effect is found to be relatively significant, compared with live load effect and should receive adequate attention in design. On the other hand the influence of warping and torsion effects in the analyzed typical Michigan skewed bridges is found to be small and negligible for the considered cases of span length, beam spacing, and skew angle. Based on these findings, the AASHTO distribution-factor analysis method is recommended to be used beyond the MDOT current policy of 30° skew angle limit for refined analysis, provided that the recommended modification factor C is applied and if the structure type, span length, beam spacing, and skew angle are within the ranges of the analyzed spans covered in this report. An analytical solution for skewed thick plate modeling the concrete bridge deck is also developed in this research project, which can be furthered into an analytical solution for the bridge superstructure. When implemented in a software program, the analytical solution will serve routine design better than the distribution factor method and the finite element analysis method, without a constraint to the skew angle or a requirement for complex input such as element type, shape, size, etc. required for finite element analysis.

However, several design requirements need evaluation and field verification to asses their accuracy. Those associated with the full-depth shear key joints in multi-beam decks, load distribution in highly skew continuous bridges, and permit load bridge rating are reviewed in the context. Multi-beam decks can be made by precast units that are post-tensioned together with shear keys and transverse post-tensioning. The performance of the longitudinal joints with regards to load transfer and water tightness is one of the design features of interest. To transfer load between the adjacent units, the joints are filled with grout material. The transverse post-tensioning stress is employed to prevent excessive opening of these joints. Live load tests on multi-beam bridge were performed to obtain actual load distribution data. The study presents the test results and an associated finite element analyses. A simplified method based upon grillage analogy is developed to quantify required transverse post-tensioning stresses in the longitudinal joints. The efficiency of the joints was evaluated by comparing with a hypothetical monolithic slab structure and by the distribution of loads in the transverse direction. The post-tensioning stresses as calculated according to the method were compared with the requirements of the AASHTO LRFD provisions. Estimation of the span and support moment is required to develop a realistic design for skew continuous bridges. Distribution factors recommended by the code provide convenience and simplistic methods to calculate the moments on bridge girders. Refined formulas for estimating the load distribution factors are provided in the current AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. A considerable amount of literature is available on field verification studies of right angle steel girder bridges; however studies on highly skew bridges are relatively limited. Previous studies on highly skew bridges have verified the distribution characteristics either analytically or experimentally using prototype bridges. The current study presents a live load field test carried out on a 60-degree skew three-span continuous steel girder bridge. The results are used to derive quantitative information regarding the actual transverse load distribution characteristics of the bridge to asses the accuracy of the current methods. To account for the application of overloads, the LRFR permit load rating was modified by introducing the fatigue damage of overloads. The study used a modification factor referred to as the fatigue index to point to the damage causing effect of overloads. A method is developed to calculate the modification factor. The method considers the fatigue damage that may be caused by overloads as well as the stresses induced by normal traffic. The approach assumes that fatigue index for a specific overload is proportional to the total number of stress cycles required to increase the crack size to the crack threshold at stress induced by normal traffic. The number represents the overload stress cycles that would produce a crack size at which normal traffic stress cycle is able to contribute to the crack growth. The fatigue index as determined by the method reflects the severity of an overload and its potential for causing fatigue damage."--P. iii-iv.

Book excerpt: Over the past decade, bridge engineers have begun to take advantage of the increased yield strengths and weldability provided by High Performance Steel. This type of steel, including HPS Grade 70W which is covered in this study, allows for lighter structural dead loads of bridges and increased span lengths without growth in cross-section depth of the main load supporting members. In turn, this reduction in girder depth results in a reduced moment of inertia and an increased flexibility of the members. Dead load deflections of the girders, resulting from the reduced moment of inertia, can be challenging to model and design for in a highly skewed structure such as the Churchman's Road Bridge, the 772'-3" four span continuous bridge in Christiana, Delaware instrumented for this study. The sizeable deflections require large precut cambers of the plate girders and, additionally, increased flexibility about the x-axis can increase the probability of girder torsion during the construction of a highly skewed bridge. The objective of this project was to develop and apply an instrumentation plan for the girders and the cross-frames of Churchman's Road Bridge prior to its erection and monitor the stresses developed in the members throughout construction and the load testing. The placement of these gauges prior to erection allows for more accurate analysis of the dead load stresses in the steel and allows for the comparison of expected values determined through finite element modeling to measured stresses. An evaluation of the bridge and the High Performance Steel as a useful bridge material was then made. Through the successful completion of this project, a complete dead load and construction stress timeline has been captured and analyzed. The original structure, designed with cross-frames that were parallel to the skew, was found to be torsionally flexible and was deemed to be insufficiently braced by the design engineers to support a deck pour. After adding additional cross-frames perpendicular to the girders, the hybrid HPS girder system performed well throughout the remainder of construction and during a diagnostic load test. Recommendations for future instrumentation plans of this type have been provided that allow for more effective structural analysis. Additionally, through the retrofit and redesign of the lateral load resisting system occurring during the course of this project, conclusions on skewed bridge construction and design have been developed.
