Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you sick of reading boring, lengthy, jumbled business planning books that do little to actually help owners succeed in business? So am I! Which is the reason I wrote this book!Time and again, I've sat down with a business owner as the newly hired consultant to talk about how to implement the latest greatest idea, only to find that the company is teetering on the brink of extinction with no concept of how they do business, let alone a way to make their new idea work. Did I mention they're often struggling financially, too? This comes from a lack of structured planning. I could throw in all the clichés (like if you fail to plan you plan to fail), but it's not surprising that most small businesses don't really have a plan. Planning is challenging and time consuming, and much of the information out there is convoluted and daunting. Sole proprietors and small business owners are often driven by passion rather than simply an interest in business. They start a business they care for and learn hard business lessons as they go, all while wearing most of the hats in the process. They don't have time for another involved project, and they don't have a lot of room for failure. So, when they hear they need a plan, they may get a book and try to write one. Or several. Only to get lost in the details and stuck on the semantics and then to discard the thing in a drawer because it does not make sense to the business. I totally get it. I've written a workbook modeled on the successful methods I've used with clients to "turn the ship around" and get them on a path they can be not just functional, but happy with. It's made to take the mystery, and the fear frustration and confusion, out of planning for a business, and instead bring it to a level of accessible. It's structured as an activity book designed to take a business owner through a series of steps to make their own strategic plan. Each chapter represents a step, with a corresponding example and activity for the owner to complete. It's simplified, as it should be, so that it can be completed quickly and set into motion. A motivated owner should be able to finish this in a month if serious, and in a weekend if truly diligent and bent on getting it done. Easy is one of the most misused words in the English language so I will not call it easy. But I will say this is concise, and cuts through much of what you don't need in a plan to help you focus on what you do.

Which is the reason I wrote this book. My strategic planning book cuts to the chase and just helps You write the plan. It's not hype, it's not a lot of flowery reading, it's just the work itself. And it's designed to serve the business owner's NEED. It's a writable workbook featuring a cool, manageable, hands-on activity after each short, to the point, chapter. If you're reading this you need something that won't waste your time, but instead return it to you in spades. My offer is to get You through a planning session in as little as a weekend if You are hell bent on finishing, and within a short month as a side project if simply focused, with the potential for immediate implementation upon completion. Because, I want to help you succeed! Sarah Joy is a self-made sole proprietor who got her start by selling blogging and marketing services to small business owners in her then local town of Olympia Washington. That morphed into strategic marketing planning and eventually into operational planning, as well. At some point she noticed consistencies in the places small business owners were struggling, and that lead to the birth of the planning process that you can now find in this book. She's helped a myriad of over 4 dozen businesses in her time as a consultant and continues to seek out new and challenging clients. When she is not busy working, as a true Pacific Northwest native she can be found outside rain or shine enjoying natures slopes or trails or waterways.

This book was released on 2006-05-24 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any book on planning has to be easy to read and full of examples on how to do it with forms and illustrations. That is exactly what this book is and why it is called a “guidebook”. The fact that most people do not plan well is well documented by the demographics of the population and the economic situation that a growing senior population is faced with now due to poor planning or no planning earlier in their lives. Since company’s are run by people they exhibit the idiosyncrasies of the people who run them. Many company’s do not have strategic plans or operating plans. Some firms do not even have a budget and operate on a day-by-day basis. The obvious result of this is crisis management, cash flow problems and the constant risk of going out of business. Many company’s both large and small have disappeared due to the lack of a plan and this has been well documented in the business press. Managers do not have a plan for their business because they do not have a plan for themselves. Planning is not something that we are born with a natural ability to do well, or in many cases - at all. Planning is a learned skill and their is a need for simple step-by-step guides which is what this book is about. It has been written as a result of years of experience that the author has had working with hundreds of company’s. The foundation for the book is a process that the author calls the “Plan-for-Planning” - a five step exercise that he has used to help managers build business plans for their company’s. It is a proven formula that has resulted in increased profitability, operational efficiencies and the optimization of the overall allocation of resources for the author’s clients. It also has been the basis for the development of executive level seminars by the author that have been promoted and implemented by BUSINESS WEEK and Inc. Magazine domestically, and Frost & Sullivan internationally. The initial publication of this book was by Inc. as a result of the success of the seminar series for their audience - growing firms. Articles have been written about the Plan-for-Planning process and it has been instrumental in the development of business plans that have resulted in company’s being sold for a premium to the shareholders as a result of the quality of the business planning process. The book has been used by many managers and in some cases continues to be a reference guide for the new businesses that they have become involved with. It is really an easy to use guide for developing a business/strategic plan for any business.
