While the Reagan administration failed to deploy the SDI system, it featured prominently in the relationship between the US and the Soviet Union. This insightful book examines SDI and the Reagan administration through an evaluation of the role of the SDI in the end of the Cold War. Presenting an extensive range of primary and secondary material together with interviews, the book will be welcomed by academics and upper level students interested in politics and history.
Download or read book Star Wars written by Robert Bowman and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reveals the plain facts about Star Wars as seen by Bowman, who in his 22-year Air Force career was director of the Advanced Space Programs Development and controlled the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency studies. These studies covered high-energy laser development, advanced surveillance spacecraft, advanced space vehicle subsystems, and other Star Wars-related research. Bowman begins with an overview of the development of missile systems and their impact on international security and the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) treaty. He also covers the strategic and technical implications of anti-satellite (ASAT) weapons and the ballistic missile defense system. Though the proponents of the Star Wars argue that it is a purely defensive system and a moral alternative to Mutual Assured Destruction, the author believes that it would be a Death Star system, destroying Earth and its inhabitants. ISBN 0-87477-390-3: $14.95.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essay argues that U.S. policymakers have come to misunderstand the very role of military power, wasting America's patriotism and American lives. As little sympathy remains between those who make security policy and those whose bodies enforce it, the only remedy is to reacquire the efficacious simplicity of the Founding Fathers' thought and habits.

Book Synopsis The Strategic Defense Initiative by : Edward Reiss
Download or read book The Strategic Defense Initiative written by Edward Reiss and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-07-23 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of the Strategic Defense Initiative ranges across politics, economics, strategic studies and international relations, and provides the latest research into the SDI interest groups, the distribution of contracts, and the politics of influence. It discusses the wider contexts of 'Star Wars', such as alliance management, marketing, and domestic politics, and its military spin-offs, especially for anti-satellite (ASAT) and 'space control' programmes. The author tests the theoretical literature on the dynamics of the arms race by using SDI as a case study, and draws evidence from sources such as congressional hearings, interviews, the trade press, restricted briefing papers, and documents obtained under the US Freedom of Information Act. The book follows the fortunes of strategic defence into the changed global conditions of the 1990s, following the collapse of the Soviet bloc, the Gulf War, and President Bush's announcement of a refocused SDI, the Global Protection Against Limited Strikes (GPALS).
Book Synopsis Ballistic Missile Defence and US National Security Policy by : Andrew Futter
Download or read book Ballistic Missile Defence and US National Security Policy written by Andrew Futter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-12 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the transformation in US thinking about the role of Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) in national security policy since the end of the Cold War. The evolution of the BMD debate after the Cold War has been complex, complicated and punctuated. As this book shows, the debate and subsequent policy choices would often appear to reflect neither the particular requirements of the international system for US security at any given time, nor indeed the current capabilities of BMD technology. Ballistic Missile Defence and US National Security Policy traces the evolution of policy from the zero-sum debates that surrounded the Strategic Defense Initiative as Ronald Reagan left office, up to the relative political consensus that exists around a limited BMD deployment in 2012. The book shows how and why policy evolved in such a complex manner during this period, and explains the strategic reasoning and political pressures shaping BMD policy under each of the presidents who have held office since 1989. Ultimately, this volume demonstrates how relative advancements in technology, combined with growth in the perceived missile threat, gradually shifted the contours and rhythm of the domestic missile defence debate in the US towards acceptance and normalisation. This book will be of much interest to students of missile defence and arms control, US national security policy, strategic studies and international relations in general.

Book Synopsis Space and Security by : Peter L. Hays
Download or read book Space and Security written by Peter L. Hays and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-03-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thorough examination of the roots and motivations for U.S. national security space policy provides an essential foundation for considering current space security issues. During the Cold War era, space was an important arena for the clashing superpowers, yet the United States government chose not to station weapons there. Today, new space security dynamics are evolving that reflect the growing global focus upon the broad potential contributions of space capabilities to global prosperity and security. Space and Security: A Reference Handbook examines how the United States has developed and implemented policies designed to use space capabilities to enhance national security, providing a clear and complete evaluation of the origins and motivations for U.S. national security space policies and activities. The author explains the Eisenhower Administration's quest to develop high-technology intelligence collection platforms to open up the closed Soviet state, and why it focused on developing a legal regime to legitimize satellite overflight for the purposes of gathering intelligence.
