Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Westminster The candle that is the spirit Of Westminster Church is the theme Of our story. The candle was first lighted one hundred and twenty-one years ago, in the little prairie town Of Springfield, Illi nois. It stayed alight through times Of war, times of prosperity and times Of panic, while the city in which it shone changed from a village to an urban State Capital. This is the story Of how the candle that 1s Westminster Church shone on, and bore witness, through changing times, with chang ing methods, to the unchanging truth that God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all If we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children's Story of Westminster Abbey Readers of this little volume must not expect to find in it a full description of the Abbey buildings, or a complete list of all the tombs, monuments, and other beautiful and interest ing things in the Abbey Church. That is not the aim of this book. Its chief object is to point out to British children how they may follow the great outlines of their country's history in Westminster Abbey, from the earliest ages down to our own time, - from the days of the far-off, legendary King Lucius to those of King Edward VII. The words, citizen of no mean city, ought surely to come into our minds as we look round the Abbey and see there, as we clearly can see, a kind of outward expression of all that is best in our national character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walter De Wenlok: Abbot of Westminster In the Flores Historiarum there stand side by side two records which may serve as a fitting introduction to our story, the more so as they refer to the year in which it opens. The first relates how on St. George's Day, in the year 1283, there passed away one John de Bradfield, Bishop of Rochester, to be succeeded by Thomas de Ynglestop or Inglethorpe, Dean of St. Paul's: and it proceeds to explain what an uncomfortable state of things then prevailed at Rochester between the Bishop and the monks. The Bishop appointed monks as officials in his household and conferred sergeancies to the disadvantage of the church; he also asserted his right to receive the dole or gift of St. Andrew.* This was resented by the Prior on behalf of the monks and was resisted to the extent of an appeal to the Archbishop of Canterbury, John Peckham, nothing l0th, as a Franciscan, to find himself called upon for a ruling in this squabble of regulars. His Grace's reply was immediate and ominous. "Descendam et videbo," so he told the Prior, not at all unmindful that this was the phrase in which the Vulgate represents the Almighty's announcement to Abraham of an intention to examine the sinfulness of Sodom and Gomorrah. I refer to the scientific discoveries and mechanical inven tions of the present century. The extent to which these have influenced the fortunes of women is not, I think, sufficiently realised. And on the site of that lit tle church dedicated to St. Peter upon the thorn grown island in the marshes, grew up centuries later the glorious Abbey that all English and American boys and girls should love. For that Abbey is the record of the growth of our two great nations. Within its walls we are on common ground. We are in goodly company;' among those who by their words and deeds and examples have made England and America what they are. America is represented just as much as England by every monument in the Abbey earlier than the Civil And within the last few years England has been proud to enshrine in her Pantheon the memories of two great and good Americans George Peabody, the philanthropist, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the poet. Come with me, in spirit, my American friends, and let us wander down to Westminster on some warm June morning. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Westminster Assembly This little work is nothing more than what it professes to be, a short history of the Westminster Assembly. It is hoped that the work will be found a fair and accurate statement of the historical facts associated with the Assembly. The author has done his best to work over for himself and with his own eyes the materials on which the history is based. These materials are abundant, and it is only too probable that much has escaped his notice and research. The Westminster Assembly was an epoch in the creed forming age in which it met, and the results of its deliberations have been far-reaching. Recent events in Scotland, notably the decision of the House of Lords on August lst, 1904, in the Free Church of Scotland Appeals Case, have given a fresh interest to the Assembly and its work, more especially the Confession of Faith. Attention may, therefore, be directed to two Notes appended to Chapter IX. These Notes have arisen directly out of the judgment of the House of Lords, and contain matter which may be of some interest to students of the Assembly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Westminster Abbey, Its Architecture, History and Monuments, Vol. 2 After the Queen's death it is said that the baser passions of avarice and inins tice gained sway with him. Naturally cautious and prudent, his many years of deprivation and exile may have empha sized this tendency. Constant companion ship with a nature so generous, so unself ish, so sweet and loveable as that of his queen, may have held these unbeautiful qualities of the king in abeyance: and, in any case, they seem to have been some what exaggerated by historians. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Westminster Abbey: Its Memories and Its Message Very varied are these spiritual qualities which have come to be focused in the Abbey, and which are, in sum, the Spirit of our Race. To recall them and the Great Dead in whom they originated is a stimulus and an inspiration. But other interest gathers about them as we watch the familiar native touch upon them all, and observe that they are English not only in their merits but in their defects; and that a history of our civilization, in its weakness as well as its strength, might be read from these manifestations of the Spirit of a Nation in Westminster Abbey. Our physical history, with its origin in the union of many races, is implicit in the beginnings of Westminster. It is symbolized in the very fabric itself, where all sorts of foreign elements have been assimilated, and where the minds and hands of several nations have co-operated in labour. In the foundations of our civil life many stones were laid by the monks of this 'monastery in the West'; and thus there enters into the national spirit a vital element drawn from the Benedictine Rule. In dynastic history the close association of the Crown with the Church at Westminster is seen to take its rise in two specifically English things in the royal Founders - the warm affection which existed between the Confessor and his people, and the deep piety of Henry III.
