Book Synopsis The Story of Some English Shires (Classic Reprint) by : Mandell Creighton
Download or read book The Story of Some English Shires (Classic Reprint) written by Mandell Creighton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Some English Shires The present volume, the Story of Some English Shires, ' was originally published by the Religious Tract Society in the year 1897. It then appeared in two forms, as an Edition de Luxe, and as a handsome illustrated volume in royal quarto. Both of these editions were sold out immediately after publication, and the book has long been out of print. But there is a strong feeling that, since the work is of permanent literary and historical value, and is from the pen of one of the recognized masters of English history, it should be issued again in permanent library form. In order to meet this suggestion the book has been reprinted as the reader now has it. The contents are the same as the previous issue, except that a chapter on the county of Cambridge has been added. It was Dr. Creighton's purpose to tell in like manner the story of all the English Shires; but unhappily the manifold duties of his great position prevented him from doing more, since 1897, in the way of completing his great plan than the writing of this one new chapter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Volume of English Miscellanies: Illustrating the History and Language of the Northern Counties of England These Miscellanies have been prepared to make a small second volume for 1888. They are historical documents of considerable interest and have a great dialectic value in addition to the information they afford about Northern persons and manners. The documents are chiefly drawn from the registers of the Lord Mayor and Corporation of York, and comprise: - I. An account of the proceedings in a remarkable case of adulteration at York, showing the care that was taken to prevent what has been in all ages one of the great vices of traders. It also shows how a criminal could often escape from justice by appealing for protection to some great personage. II. All the verdicts of the searchers called in to decide about encroachments, &c., in the city of York, down to the year 1500. III. The presentments of the juries appended to the Court-rolls of the Abbots of Selby, from the originals in the possession of the Earl of Londesborough. IV. A series of certificates of the parentage and birth of certain persons who had been charged with being Scots. This series contains all the certificates in English on the York registers, and they are exceedingly carious. V. The programme for the reception of Henry VII. on his first visit to York in 1486. VI. The customs and liberties of the burgesses of New Malton, from the original roll in the possession of Earl Fitzwilliam. Download or read book English History in Short Stories (Classic Reprint) written by John Whipple Potter Jenks and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English History in Short Stories This little book is not designed to be a History of England. It is, first, a compendium of facts about England, its history, government, and antiquities, - facts which all English-speaking people ought to know, and which are not readily accessible to those Americans who do not have good libraries at hand. It contains, secondly, a series of sketches of each of the English monarchs; not histories of their reigns or complete biographies, but estimates of the historical importance of each. The English kings previous to the Hanoverians are the central figures of English history. The dates and other facts here given have been collated with the greatest care. The intelligent reader need not be informed that Freeman, J. R. Green, Pearson, and others are entirely reconstructing English history, and fresh estimates of men and events are resulting. Download or read book Records of Real People written by Merja Stenroos and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English local documents – leases, wills, accounts, letters and the like – provide a unique resource for historical sociolinguistics. Abundant from the early fifteenth century, they represent the language and concerns of people from a wide range of social, institutional and geographical backgrounds. However, as relatively few documents have been available digitally or in print, they have been an underresearched resource. This volume shows the tremendous potential of late- and post-medieval English local documents: highly variable in language, often colourful, including developing formulae as well as glimpses of actual recorded speech. The volume contains eleven chapters relating to a new resource, A Corpus of Middle English Local Documents (MELD). The first four chapters outline a theoretical and methodological approach to the study of local documents. The remaining seven present studies of different aspects of the material, including supralocalization, local patterns of spelling and morphology, land terminology, punctuation, formulaicness and multilingualism.
