Download or read book The Myths of Zionism written by John Rose and published by Pluto Press (UK). This book was released on 2004-09-20 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a controversial book. It is a critical account of the historical, political and cultural roots of Zionism. John Rose shows how this powerful political force is based in mythology; ancient, medieval and modern. Many of these stories, as with other mythologies, have no basis in fact. However, because Zionism is a living political force, these myths have been used to justify very real and political ends -- namely, the expulsion and continuing persecution of the Palestinians. Chapter-by-chapter, John Rose scrutinises the roots of the myths of Zionism. Mobilising recent scholarship, he separates fact from fiction presenting a detailed analysis of their origins and development. This includes a challenge to Zionism's biblical claims using very recent and very startling Israeli archaeological conclusions. He provides a detailed exploration of Judaism's links to the Middle East. He shows clearly that Zionism makes many false claims on Jewish religion and history. He questions its rationale as a response to European anti-Semitism, and shows that, if there is ever to be peace and reconciliation in the land of Palestine, this intellectual dishonesty must be addressed.
Book Synopsis The Red Rose and the White by : John Sadler
Download or read book The Red Rose and the White written by John Sadler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If Richard III had not charged to his death at Bosworth, how different might the history of Britain have been? Beginning in 1453 and ending in 1487, The Red Rose and the White provides a gripping overview of the bitter dynastic struggle for supremacy that raged between the houses of York and Lancaster for thirty years, culminating in the dramatic events on Bosworth Field in 1485. As well as offering a comprehensive account of the campaigns, battles and sieges of the conflict, the book also assesses the commanders and men involved and considers the weapons and tactics employed. Photographs, maps and portraits of the principal characters help to bring the period to life, whilst the fast-paced narrative conveys a sense of what it was actually like to fight in battles such as Towton or Tewkesbury the effect of the arrow storm and the grim realities of hand-to-hand combat with edged and bladed weapons. Skilfully weaving in political and social events to place the conflict in its context, The Red Rose and the White is a fascinating exploration of the turbulent period that would change the course of British history forever.
Download or read book The Story of Rose written by Jon Katz and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2012-08-06 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of A Good Dog, Dog Days, and Going Home comes this eBook original—a poignant memoir that celebrates Jon Katz’s beloved border collie, Rose, and their transformative years together on Bedlam Farm. “I like to say you get the dog you need,” Jon Katz writes, “and I don’t think any human ever needed a dog more than I needed Rose in the fall of 2003.” That year, Katz embarked on a quixotic quest, moving from the suburbs of New Jersey to a sprawling farm in upstate New York to pursue his dream of becoming a writer. And by his side was Rose, his unswervingly loyal and unflappable new dog. Whether herding sheep on the rolling hillsides, rounding up the neighbors’ stray cows, or rescuing lambs on a freezing winter night, Rose had a nimble mind and a great love for work. Never wanting to be coddled, she watched over Bedlam Farm with singular focus and efficiency, protecting Katz and his menagerie from wild coyotes and menacing storms. Yet Rose saved Katz in more ways than he ever imagined. As he struggled to manage the farm’s daily dramas—and continued to seek his true sense of purpose—Rose connected him to his deeper humanity and a more authentic life. With warmth, insight, and emotional honesty, Jon Katz has written a joyful remembrance of a one-of-a-kind dog. The Story of Rose reaffirms the profound bond people share with their pets, and the ways that animals indelibly shape our lives. “Jon Katz understands dogs as few others do, intuitively and unburdened by sentimentality. . . . With wisdom and grace, he unlocks the canine soul and the complicated wonders that lie within and offers powerful insights.”—John Grogan, author of Marley & Me Includes moving excerpts from Going Home, and from Jon Katz’s upcoming short-story collection, Dancing Dogs.
Book Synopsis Through the Eyes of Rose by : John Kozak
Download or read book Through the Eyes of Rose written by John Kozak and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-02 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the Eyes of Rose details the story of Rose Kozak and how she successfully defied the Czechoslovakian Communists in October 1949 and escaped with her children through the wilderness of the Bohemian Forest to the freedom of West Germany. John Kozak was just seven when he escaped with his mother and older sister from oppressive Communist rule. His emotional retelling of his mother's struggle to feed her family during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, her near drowning in the Danube River, and her reaction to the news that the Czech Communists had fabricated criminal charges against her husband all make for an intriguing look into the lives of a family deeply affected by the Communist takeover of their native country. When Rose's husband Anthony is unable to return from Switzerland to Prague where he faces imprisonment due to fabricated charges by the new Communist regime, Rose decides to escape. During her journey to seek a better life, she is betrayed by a money-hungry guide, hunted by tracking dogs, and nearly captured by a Soviet patrol. One woman's courage and dogged determination to seek freedom for her family proves that a mother's love will always persevere over evil.
Download or read book Finding Rose written by John Morey and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-11 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the Second Edition - revised and expanded with a new section. The author writes: "In the process of finalising a book prior to publication, the author needs to read it over and over again to polish it until he or she is satisfied that the reader will be satisfied with the final draft. In so doing and on each occasion, I found that certain sections still moved me to tears - but in a good way. With that in mind, I feel confident in recommending 'Finding Rose' and 'Rose: The Missing Years' to all lovers of romantic fiction." Each book in the series can be enjoyed individually, without having read any of the others. 'The Sign of the Rose' is the start of the saga but, ironically, was published last! Finding Rose is a quest, a mini-saga about a village lad meeting a beautiful gypsy girl and the obstacles they encounter as they strive to fulfill their common destinies. Discover how two people embark on a journey without knowing how, where, or with whom it will end. Will they survive as one? or apart? And what did happen in Rose's life in the seven missing years? Answers to that are in the next book but, meanwhile you might want to speculate during a fascinating read of this one. Perhaps you will discover your own story in theirs? If you do, why not compare yours with how they navigated their path through life? And if your own saga is only part-way run, you may find some wisdom here to help you - if you need it. There are no real answers here on how to deal with what life has thrown at you, just as no-one could really help John and Rose. Nobody knows the answers to all the questions concerning love and life. I certainly don't. Otherwise novels like this would never be written. But on this occasion you can be the judge. Author's Note: For those of you looking for a 'new adult' novel about two people overcoming their clashing cultures to find true love, then this is for you. I have never read 'Romeo and Juliet' (what an admission!), nor would I compare this story with that, but I do explore the complexities that often present themselves to late teens and twenties as they embark on life 'for real'. Romantic mysticism enters the lives of more people than we may care to admit. It does here, but without the trappings of horror or menace. Rose and John are, themselves, a benign force and, although their journey is not without sadness and heartache, their perseverance towards fulfilment remains undaunted. As with simpler journeys on the road or in life, it's what happens on the journey that intrigues and enriches, rather than the arrival at the destination.

Book Synopsis On the Road to Tombstone by : John D. Rose
Download or read book On the Road to Tombstone written by John D. Rose and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-08-04 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wyatt Earp, the Gunfight near the O.K. Corral, and related events happened in the larger context of an area in turmoil. The Tombstone Mining District was a fluid area, filled with hard working settlers, some of the nations best mining engineers, and some of the nations worst criminals. The Tombstone saga and its greatest conflicts were linked to incidents outside of Tombstone. A shooting near Drew's Station, drew Wyatt Earp more closely into conflict with the local outlaw element. This in turn would set in motion a chain of events that would in part lead to the West's most famous gunfight, the Gunfight near the O.K. Corral. The Earps were brought into court at Contention City over the shootings in Tombstone. The all important history of Drew's Station, Contention City, and Fairbank, Arizona Territory are now revealed for the first time ever. Heavily documented and thoroughly researched, many misconceptions about this portion of the wild west are brought to light, and a great deal of previously unpublished research is now available for the first time, bringing to light the key stories of these key locations along the road to Tombstone.

Book excerpt: In his extraordinary and highly charged new novel, John Updike tackles one of America's most burning issues – the threat of Islamist terror from within. Set in contemporary New Jersey, Terrorist traces the journey of one young man, from radicalism to fundamentalism to terrorism, against the backdrop of a fraying urban landscape and an increasingly fragmented community. In beautiful prose, Updike dramatizes the logic of the fundamentalist terrorist – but also suggests ways in which we can counter it, in our words and our actions . . .
