Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of France, Vol. 2 of 2: From the End of the Reign of Louis the Fifteenth to the Consulate of Napoleon Bonaparte The winter of 1774 gives way slowly to the spring: the April sun grows warm, driving the chill from marble court and colonnade, arching rainbows above the foun tains, carpeting in gold the terrace and promenade, and from every plant and tree of garden, park, and wood throwing its banners of leaf and bud and blossom. All Nature revels in loveliness. Life gathers up all its splendours for the living, and nowhere is the perfect glory of the new year more intoxicating than at the Little Trianon, a king's own paradise, where the king is now loitering, and is enjoying these sunny April days. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of France, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Earliest Times to the Consulate of Napoleon Bonaparte; To the End of the Reign of Louis the Fifteenth IT has been the purpose of the author to lay before the reader a clear narrative of the gradual development of a great people. N o attempt has been made to fill in every detail. The larger outlines of national growth have been followed, and every material change in the condition of the kingdom has been indicated. It is hardly necessary to say that every statement in the book is supported by authority. Not only have all the standard histories been consulted, but also those numerous [memoirs and Auto biographies in which the literature of France is so pecul iarly rich. To note the varying forms of government, to trace the ancient origins of modern laws and customs, to mark the encroachments of absolutism upon popular rights, to describe the long-continued struggle of the many to throw off the yoke of the few, to emphasize the corrupting influence of the union between Church and State, to illus trate once more the blighting effects of superstition, igno rance, blind obedience, unjust laws, confiscation under the disguise of unequal taxes, and the systematic plunder, year by year, of the weaker classes by the stronger, have been the motives which led to the enormous labour in volved in this book. Book excerpt: The story of Louis XIV-the "Sun King" of France, is a gripping tale of royal grandeur, despotism, corruption, and moral degeneracy, which, in its very extravagance, laid the seed for the destruction of the French royal house and the infamous revolution of 1789. During Louis XIV's lengthy reign he engaged in what seemed to be a never-ending series of foreign wars, all the while furiously waging interreligious strife at home, as he ruthlessly suppressed Protestant dissent and political conspiracies. His reign saw wars with the Dutch, the Austrians, and the War of the Spanish Succession, a conflict which ultimately spread to North America and involved almost every power on the European continent. As if these wars were not enough of a drain on the economy, Louis XIV's lavish court lifestyle also exhausted the treasury, and all of France suffered grievously as he and his nobles lived debauched lives with no thought of tomorrow. Louis XIV's successors would ultimately pay the price for his seventy-two-year despotic and careless reign, and it is, as the author notes, regrettable that those who plunged France into the misery in which it found itself, died peacefully in their beds, leaving others to be blamed. "The thoughtful reader will perceive that in this long and wicked reign Louis XIV was sowing the wind from which his descendants reaped the whirlwind. It was the despotism of Louis XIV and of Louis XV which ushered in that most sublime of all earthly dramas, the French Revolution."-from the Preface.
