Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dutch School of Painting The artistic energy of a great nation is not a mere accident, of which we can neither determine the cause nor foresee the result. It is, on the contrary, the resultant of the genius and character of the people the reflection of the social conditions under which it was called into being; and the product of the civilisation to which it owes its birth. All the force and activity of a race appear to be concentrated in its Art; enterprise aids its growth; appreciation ensures its development; and as Art is always grandest when national prosperity is at its height, so it is pre-eminently by its Art that we can estimate the capabilities of a people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dutch Painters of the Nineteenth Century: With Biographical Notices When the publisher asked me to write an introduction to this work I gladly accepted his invitation; nor was I long in seeking my material. The book comprises a series of articles, by various well-known writers, on the life and works of the most celebrated Dutch painters of this century. The contributors are personal friends of the artists themselves, in whose studios they have seen many of the works which they describe, and from whose lips they have heard the facts they here relate. There was no doubt therefore what my introduction should contain. Each of the biographical sketches, which are brought together in this volume, stands by itself. The various pictures are treated separately, each filling its own particular frame, as though it had neither predecessors nor successors nor yet contemporaries and belonged to no school but its own. Yet we know that not even the greatest and most original artist can escape from the influence of his time and surroundings; can be com pletely and fairly judged, if separated from what precedes and environs him. His greatness is discovered by contrast; his achievement is recognized when compared with that of others; his importance is gauged by what others have done, whether they be greater or less than himself. My Object will be therefore to point out' the threads which bind the modern painters together, and their connexion with the older school as well as their lines of divergence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German, Flemish and Dutch Painting The painters of Germany and the Netherlands provide for the English Art-Student a field of study no less interesting than that furnished by the celebrated Italian Masters. In Germany - after a school of painters who worked with a deep and honest purpose but with no immense genius - Art, in the persons of Dürer and Holbein, made an advance of incomparable importance; and owing to the fact that Holbein spent many of his best years in England, and here painted a large number of his finest works, we have an additional reason for a careful study of the great German Renaissance. After these masters and their immediate disciples, Art gradually declined in the hands of such copyists as Mengs who was nothing better than a feeble imitator of Michelangelo, and of Denner who smothered Art by his excessive elaboration. The later revival under Cornelius and Overbeck, if it does not arouse enthusiasm, at least commands respect and admiration. The early schools of Holland and Flanders were so closely allied that it is difficult to divide their honours. To the Van Eycks of Bruges is due the discovery of an improved method of using oil as a vehicle in painting, and they and their followers have never been surpassed in technical excellence. Then followed Matsys and the early school of Antwerp, and after him came the decline, hastened by over-wrought composition and a futile straining after the style of the Italians. This decline was happily checked by the advent of Rubens, the Titian of the North, whose Art is manly, although it does not possess the idealism or religious sentiment of Italy, or even of the early Flemings. With his greatest pupil, Van Dyck, all Englishmen are familiar, and indeed this country has an almost equal claim with Flanders to rank him among her painters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dutch Painting in the Nineteenth Century If, nevertheless, we insist upon considering these three painters as offshoots of our great century, then we must needs add that they were the last effort of an exhausted soil. The art of painting declined into the art of decoration or scene-painting, the pain ter's workshop was transformed into the tapestry factory. The minute, concentrated charm of our socalled little masters expanded itself into painted hangings; the stately portraits of the time degenerated, with few exceptions, into the pale, powdered pastels that seemed deliberately designed for the representation of the caricatural periwig. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landscape Painting and Modern Dutch Artists The same scene might be painted by Ruys dael and Hobbema, by Constable and Turner, by Daubigny and Rousseau, and each pic ture would take on the spirit of the individual artist, and give the observer very different ideas of identical views. For if it is not the actual scene before him that is painted, but his idea of it, it is evident that the personality of the artist counts for a very great deal in pictures; and so it is the subjective view of art that is the all-important one. Book excerpt: This is the first survey of the diverse critical understandings of seventeenth-century Dutch art from its origins to the present. Appreciated in the eighteenth century by amateurs and collectors, Dutch art during the Romantic age became a focus of ideological interest. From the late nineteenth century onward, it developed into a subject of scholarly research, indeed one of the foundational fields of art history in the modern era. This study provides insight into the various artistic, literary, political, and philosophical approaches that Dutch painting has inspired over the ages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dutch Art, as Seen by a Layman We can trace in the works of the early Flemish painters a tendency to paint domestic subjects, and when freed from the necessity to paint for the clergy and the church, the true bent of the national art among the Dutch showed itself at once. The ma jority of the Spaniards devoted their energies to scriptural scenes, though when Velasquez painted con temporary scenes, they were usually some royal pa geant or battle scene. In Germany we have little beyond the portraits of Holbein and others, and it was not until Hogarth came that scenes of English life were portrayed. Amongst the Dutch artists-oi about this period we find Ruysdael, who has handeddown to us faithful representations of his native Haar lem seen from a distance. Hobbema has made us acquainted with the surroundings of Dutch cottage life in the seventeenth century; Cuyp gives us an ln sight into the affairs of the well-to-do classes; while Potter shows us the farm life of his time with a truth that has never been surpassed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Dutch and Flemish Masters: With Critical Notes There is another reason for the publication of these engravings, one held in view by the originators of the first series. It seems fitting and proper that a knowledge of Dutch art should be spread through the land by just such reproductions as these. People to day, though they do not sneer at Dutch art, are far from estimating it at its true worth. They cherish ideals and academic formulas of the beautiful, and are only too prone to overlook that truth, char acter, wholesome picturesqueness, and surprising skill for which Dutch art is famous. Even with those who profess a love for the Dutchmen, there is a tendency to elevate Dou above Hals and Potter above Cuyp. In brief, while people have been studying Greek and Italian art for years, the art of the Netherlands has been comparatively neglected, and to-day is not at all well understood, except by the few. The engravings of Mr. Cole, then, are oppor tune, in that they furnish materials for study. In the absence of the originals, which for various reasons the majority of people will never see, nothing could be better designed to take their place than these admirable reproductions. The pictures from which the engravings have been made were selected with the aim of giving the work of the representative men in Dutch and Flemish art. It was necessary, on account of the great extent of the Netherlands art, that a period only should be given, and so the brilliant painting of the seventeenth century furnished the originals for the engravings. The text that accompanies them, and Mr. Cole's comments, are intended to explain this seven teenth-century art, and to give some account of the history of the schools, and of the individual painters whose works are engraved.
