Book excerpt: Excerpt from David Alden's Daughter: And Other Stories of Colonial Times Most of the stories collected in this volume were written some years ago and printed in various magazines, - as "Harper's Monthly," "The Atlantic Monthly," the late lamented "Putnam's Monthly," and others, to each of which thanks for the privilege of republication are hereby tendered. At the period when some of them - notably "The Love Life of William Bradford" and "Barbara Standish" - were written, the author was in the first flush of delight and surprise at discovering the wealth of romance imbedded in that "Forefather's Rock" which to many observers still appears a mere mass of granite, stern, cold, and sad. Perhaps the joy of this discovery, working upon a youthful imagination and untried powers, may have induced a certain fermentation of fancy, suggesting rather what "might have been," than what is known to have been. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonial Days: A Historical Reader The large place given to history during the last fifteen years, in both the elementary and the high school, is significant. It indicates a fuller realization of the importance of this branch of study in developing the social instincts. Through the study of history the narrow contact of every-day life is supplemented by a knowledge of the struggles and achievements of all humanity. The pupil shares and profits by the experience of the race; and by making the racial life his own, he gains social insight and social disposition, which prepare him to render his highest service to the community. In the lower grades of the elementary school most of the work in history should be in the form of oral language lessons, and the subject-matter should be presented in story form. The concrete, the personal, and the dramatic, appealing in a special way to children, should be made prominent; for through this avenue alone can the teacher reach the imaginative and the emotional life of the child. But as early as the fourth grade reading should supplement the oral work. With this idea in view the present volume, the second of a series, has been prepared. The title gives some indication of its scope and purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the English Colonies in America The history Of the thirteen American colonies is at best fragmentary and provincial, and does not assume the impor tance and value of the history Of a nation until the meeting of the Stamp Act Congress at New York in the year 17 65. But who and what the people were who fought the war for Independence and founded the United States - what was their life, what their habits, thoughts, and manners - seemed to me, when I began my study Of American history, questions Of the deepest interest. They were questions, too, which appeared to me never to have been answered in a compact and com prehensive form; and this volume is an attempt to supply the deficiency. The chapters, therefore, which purport to de scribe the various colonies in and about the year 17 65 repre sent the purpose of the book. They have been worked out, in the course of several years, from a mass of material which has been collected in all directions, and which, although wholly in print, is in many cases as generally unknown as if it still slumbered in manuscript. TO these chapters I have append ed notes - mere references - partly to support conclusions which I thought might be questioned, and partly to aid other students in the same field. The notes represent, however, only a portion Of the books, tracts, and newspapers actually consulted. There are many titles in my note-books Of works which yielded nothing, and of others again which Offered mat ter that had to be laid aside from mere superabundance of material: only the most valuable and important figure in the notes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Times in the Colonies To the boys and girls of America: The settlement of our country was the beginning of a new era in human affairs. The people of England, ever since the days of King John, when the barons compelled him to sign the Magna Charta in the meadow of Runnymede, had struggled against tyranny; and when the emigrants sailed across the Atlantic to rear their homes in Virginia and New England, it was the transplanting of liberty to a continent where everything was new, and where the conditions that surrounded them were wholly unlike those of the old world. This volume is an outline of some of the principal events that transpired during the colonial period of our country, and portrays the hardships and sufferings of those who laid the foundations of a new empire. It will show how the Old World laws, habits, and customs were gradually changed; how the grand ideas of freedom and the rights of man took root and flourished. It covers the period from the discovery and settlement of America to the Revolutionary War. In 1876 I wrote a volume entitled "The Boys of '76" - a narrative of the battles of the Revolution, and of the trials and devotion of our fathers in establishing the independence of the United States. While preparing that work, I discovered that there was no volume in existence that would give the young people of our country an idea of the struggles of men in England and Europe against the tyranny of emperors, kings, popes, archbishops, bishops, and inquisitors; to supply that want, I wrote a second volume, entitled "The Story of Liberty," which traced a chain of events through a period of five hundred years, from the signing of the Magna Charta to the settlement of Jamestown and Plymouth. This volume, therefore, fills the gap between the others in time, and together they make a series, not of general history, but an outline history of the progress of ideas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Palatines: An Episode in Colonial History That which by most people, who know any thing about the Palatine Immigration, is sup posed to be alluded to in any reference to that people, is merely the incoming of the large company which landed in New York in the early summer of I 710. They made the largest body of emigrants coming at one time to this country in the colonial period. There were nearly three thousand of them, and they were perhaps at once the most miserable and most hopeful set of people ever set down upon our shores. But they were not all. A small band had preceded them to New York about the same time as their own coming, a company of seven hundred had gone to North Carolina, and another company to Virginia; and in later years they were followed by many thousands of their countrymen in the Palatinate, the vast majority of whom found settlement in Penn sylvania. These various immigrations make in reality one story, having, as they do, one source and bound together by a common im pulse, constituting a distinct episode in colo nial history well worthy of study, and quite unique in its interest and character. The solitude of the situation and its te moteness from English settlements forced them to rely upon their own resources. They wove flax and sheep's wool into mate rials for clothing; they made and shared in use the plows and tools needed in their methods of agriculture; they cut firewood in a common forest and grazed cattle in common pastures; they built Sloops for freighting and fishing, and traded with each other by truck and dicker. Their te cords show that they had no religious big otry, no enmity to Quakers, no belief in witchcraft, no enthusiasm for public schools, no disloyalty to the king.
