Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of California The following book was written because there seemed to be a demand for a History of California which should sketch the main events of the country from its discovery to the present time. The pioneer, under whose observation the. Most exciting of these events have occurred, confesses the need of such a book. The thousands who have entered the State since it assumed its present peaceful aspect, complain of the lack of a succinct story of what had to be done here to make the land so pleasant a home. The material for a history of California is abundant. The log-books of ancient mariners who visited the coast - the voluminous, if not well-kept archives of the Government, while the territory was under Spanish or Mexican rule - the official reports and Congressional documents about the transfer to the United States - the files of newspapers since the land was Americanized the scores of books of intelligent travellers, who have put their impressions on record, and the oral evidence of natives, and early immigrants, who mingled in all the affairs most interesting to us - from these sources may be drawn ample details of life in California, from dates as far in the past as any but enthusiastic antiqua rians care to retire to. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Sacramento County, California: With Biographical Sketches of the Leading Men and Women of the County Who Have Been Identified With Its Growth and Development From the Early Days to the Present Such has been for many years the attitude of a large part of this grand state, the empress that sits throned on the shores Of the Pacific, conscious of her charm and confident of the future that awaits her, and that is drawing as a magnet the dwellers of colder climes and more inhospitable Shores to the land of sunshine and flowers. And such has long been the attitude of Sacramento county, the peer of any in California. But a' transformation has begun and the future will witness the unfolding of the bud of beauty into a perfect flower that shall surpass the most sanguine expectations. With a city that will expand in the future into the largest inland city on the coast, all her advantages will keep pace with her evolution and she will take her proper place among the gems that grace the diadem of the great empire of the Pacific coast, the magnificent state that took for her motto Eureka, and might well have added to it Excelsior. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Days of California: Embracing What I Saw and Heard There, With Scenes in the Pacific We may learn much from the pulseless soli tudes - from the desert untrodden by the foot of living thing - from the frozen world of mountains, whose chasms and cliffs never echoed to aught but the thunder-tempests girding their frozen peaks from old Nature, piled, rocky, bladeless, toneless if we will allow its lessons of awe to reach the mind, and impress it with the fresh and holy images which they were made to inspire. And now, dear reader, my task is done. Should you laugh and weep, suffer and rejoice, with the actors in the wayfarings before you, and send your fancy in after-times over those rose-clad realms where they will lead you, and feel the dews of a pleasant remembrance falling on your life, I shall receive a full reward for my toil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Days of Santa Barbara, California: From the First Discoveries by Europeans to December, 1846 This work was done on account of a personal inter est in the subject, and with the view of placing the data, thus obtained, at the disposal of any one competent and willing to write the history of the early days of Santa Barbara. But the subject has awakened but little inter est in the historian; and as some of the ruins that were then surveyed have since disappeared, the writer now offers this little sketch, accompanied by plans of the Mission and presidio, made from the original surveys, in the hope that it will create a greater interest in the lives and works of the founders of this beautiful city. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Illustrated History of Sonoma County, California: Containing a History of the County of Sonoma From the Earliest Period of Its Occupancy to the Present Time The year following, on September 17th, under the direction of Commandante Moraga, the presidio of San Francisco was duly inaugurated amid the firing of cannons, ringing Of bells and all the formalities usual to typify absolute Spanish possession. The San Carlos had just arrived, and Captain Quiros, Canizares and Re ville, master and mate, participated in the lay ing of the corner-stone of this the future metropolis of the Pacific coast. Something over one hundred persons were present on that occasion. Right then and there it became a fixed finality that civilization held the keys to the Golden Gate to the Pacific coast. In order to punctuate this so as to rivet the attention of the reader, we borrow the language of a writer in the Overland Monthly who says: On that same 17th of September, on the other side of the continent, Lord Howe's Hessian and British troops were revelling in the city of New York. We might supplement this with the observation that if it took from 1776 to 1823 for Spanish occupation to extend its lines from San Fran cisco to Sonoma, it should somewhat break the force of carping criticism in reference to the time consumed by Moses and the children of Israel in their emigration from Egypt up to the land of Canaan. But in this we anticipate history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
