His colorful sermons and charismatic personality made him one of the most popular preachers of his time. In this memoir, Frederick William Bourne collects Bray's own writings to tell the story of his life and his journey from a life of drunkenness and despair to one of joy and faith. FULLY RIPE FOR THE GARNER. "Thou Shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of ooni cometh in in his season."--Job V. 26. TTAVING nearly filled the space allotted me, I notice DEGREES in reading what I have written, that the subjects so run into one another, that my purpose to keep them separate and distinct has not been fully accomplished; and that I have dealt with the flowers and fruits, rather than with the roots and the principles of the Christian life. There are also some points which in my plan had separate chapters assigned to them which have hardly been noticed; and Billy's evangelistic labours was one, in which he succeeded in first winning the ear, and then the heart, and thus introducing the gospel into many places; his view of the sin and danger of worldly conformity was another, under which head his opposition to holding bazaars to raise money for religious purposes, to choir singing in the public worship of God's house, when the singers were unconverted, or when the tunes were such that the congregation could not readily join in the service of praise,1 and to preachers and members, especially the former, allowing their beards to grow long, according to the prevailing fashion, might very properly have been discussed. Some will regard this last-named particular as an indication of essential narrowness of mind. But he was ready to make excuses for those persons who, he believed, allowed their beards to grow long for the sake of their health, but he could not tolerate them for one moment if he believed that persons did so for pride, or love of show and fashion. Perhaps it was a struggle in all cases for him to overcome his prejudices against long beards I Let the reader call it a weakness in him, or...

Book excerpt: "When the earth started to shake and the rocks fell Billy Bray knew that his life was in danger. When you're down a mine shaft, digging for tin, in the dark, damp tunnels ... a rock fall could kill you. Mining in the 1800s was dangerous, it still is today - it was a hard life for little pay and safety measures were few and far between. Surviving that rock fall started Billy Bray on a different path - for the first time in a long time he walked home sober. Drink no longer had the same appeal. The jovial, happy-go-lucky guy who made fun of everything - even God - suddenly realised that he had a soul, that he was a sinner, and that he was in danger of spending eternity in the deepest pit there was - hell. However God's plan for Billy was not to leave him in his sin and misery. Billy Bray discovers true happiness in Jesus Christ and his legacy to the Cornish people included lively preaching, newly built chapels and true revivals. Billy was saved from the deepest pit - and went on to tell others that they can also be saved from their sin."--Back cover.
