Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of America, Containing the Romantic Incidents of History, From the Discovery of America to the Present Time The desire throughout, in the writing of this history, has been to record the heroic adventures and celebrate the picturesque incidents that make our history romantic and memorable. Such incidents as awaken patriotism and enthusiasm are those which are most worthy of preservation, and the influences they have upon the imaginative and generous minds of the young are incalculable. If some of the duller pages of the congressional debate and ineffectual law making have been neglected for these more brilliant chapters, it is not the young who will reproach us. For the minds of the young select with unerring instinct those things which are of actual importance. They read with passionate tears of the martyrdom of the devoted; they are fired with heroism and lofty pride at the accomplishments of the heroic, and they condemn with bitter contempt the intrigues of the mean, and the cowardice of the time-serving. To arouse the noble impulse, and keep alive the love for patriotism, fidelity, bravery, and true holiness, has been the aim of the book. It contains little that is new; but it has been sifted from the best histories, and the latest ones. It is, however, the first book to record the events of the last ten years, and these events it has tried to deal with impartially, unblinded by the conflict of parties, sects, or factions. If injustice has been done in any way, it has been unwitting. If it conveys, in understandable language, the most memorable occasions of our national history, condemning and praising where condemnation and praise are due, then it has accomplished all that it aimed to for its young readers. He was born in Boston. At the age of nine, he was taken abroad, and for five years lived in Europe. In I867 he returned to the United States and remained until I87 I, when he went to England and was graduated at Oxford in 1875. On his return to this country he entered the Columbia Law School. In 1876 he bought the Non'/z American Review and became its editor. He is noted as having organized, in 1879, and subsequently directed, an expedition which was despatched underthe joint auspices of the United States and France to systematically investigate the remains of ancient civilization in Central America and New Mexico. In I884 he bought a controlling interest in the Le Malz'n, one of the leading papers of Paris, which he successfully managed. He always took an active interest in politics, and in 1886 received the Republican nomination for Congress, but was defeated. He edited reminiscences of Abraham Lincoln and contributed valuable material to literature concerning the ancient cities of the New World. John A. In 1869, he came to America, entering the College of Augustana. He soon became editor of a Swedish newspaper printed in Chicago, and afterwards assumed the charge of several Scandinavian periodicals. Many of gothic horror’s spookiest tales have come from the pens of women. Yet a substantial number of these women were overshadowed by their male contemporaries, especially with regard to the classics. Ladies of Gothic Horror (A Collection of Classic Stories) redresses this imbalance by bringing together a selection of gothic stories from the past written exclusively by women. Carefully edited and compiled by author and anthologist Mitzi Szereto, Ladies of Gothic Horror offers readers plenty of good old-fashioned chills and thrills. Whether you’re a devotee of the genre, a literature lover, an academic or a student, this volume of short fiction is sure to please. The biographies accompanying each story will show that these women were anything but typical for their time. Includes seventeen stories from authors Mary Shelley, Elizabeth Gaskell, Edith Wharton, Marjorie Bowen, Gertrude Atherton, Virginia Woolf, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Elia W. Peattie and many more. "Ladies of Gothic Horror (A Collection of Classic Stories) is a must-read for anyone who loves the horror, mystery, science fiction, or paranormal genres." - Long and Short Reviews "An inspiring collection, to be enjoyed in its own right, preferably by candlelight while sat in your favourite chair…" - ScreamFix "You’ll find some damn fine fiction in this collection and some equally impressive true stories." - Get On My Damn Level book reviews "We have stories with ghosts, some malevolent, some seeking vengeance, and some simply waiting for a wrong to be corrected…. [Including] a thoughtful look into the time period, and the challenges that these women had faced in getting published, let alone in living their everyday lives." - Girl Who Reads

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "OWEN WISTER Ultimate Collection: Historical Novels, Western Classics, Adventure & Romance Stories (Including Non-Fiction Historical Works)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Owen Wister (1860-1938) was an American writer and "father" of western fiction. When he started writing, he naturally inclined towards fiction set on the western frontier. Wister's most famous work remains the novel The Virginian, set in the Wild West. It describes the life of a cowboy who is a natural aristocrat, set against a highly mythologized version of the Johnson County War and taking the side of the large land owners. The Virginian paved the way for many more westerns by such authors as Zane Grey, Louis L'Amour, and several others. It is also widely regarded as being the first cowboy novel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Incidents in American History: Being a Selection of the Most Important and Interesting Events Which Have Transpired Since the Discovery of America, to the Present Time Authentic accounts of important events which have taken pace in past ages, are of much utility; especially to the coun tries and people whose affairs are related. In a country like ours, it seems necessary to the existence of true and enlight ened. Patriotism, that every person should possess some know edge of the history of his own country. By the aid of history size can call up past scenes and events in review - we can see the effects they have had upon the nations before us, and from thence we can learn wisdom for the future. It is, in reality, interesting and instructive to every intelligent mind, to be transported back to the time of the first settlement of our coun try, to observe the courage, fortitude, and self-denial of our forefathers, amidst many surrounding dangers, difficulties, and privations, -their unconquerable love of freedom, - the resist ance they manifested to tyranny in all its shapes, - and the final success of their efforts to preserve the freedom and in dependence of their country entire. This work is not designed for the information of those who are conversant with the history of our country in all its parts (this class of community is comparatively small;) but for those who cannot spare the time or expense of reading or procuring a full and complete history. The object of the work is to give an account, in a short but comprehensive manner, of the most important and interesting events which have taken place in our country, -nearly all of which are arranged in chronological order. Those events which are deemed of minor importance, are inserted in the Chronological Tables, at the end of the book, as every event which is mentioned could not be detailed, without swelling the book to an expensive size.
