Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of a Great Nation, or Our Country's Achievements, Military, Naval, Political, and Civil To present the great facts of our country's history in an attractive and readable form has been the object of this work. That the His tory of the United States is not more generally read arises from the fact that the works which ordinary readers find are overloaded With details and interrupted by tedious disquisitions. Others seem writ ten from a sectional, political, or other stand-point, and the writer's prejudices are thrust before the reader at every page. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Political and Military Biography Although the narrow and illiberal policy of the British gov ernment towards her North American colonies, from their first settlement, was calculated to alienate the afiections of the colo nies from the parent country yet from their exposed situation, and habitual loyalty, this unworthy conduct, long persevered in, produced no sensible impression on the Americans their loyalt and attachment to the interests of Britain were net in the smal est degree impaired, down to the period of the peace of Paris in 1763. Never had they shewn so much zeal, or made such great sacrifices in the cause of their country, as during the preceding war having lost more than twenty-five thousand men, expend ed all the revenues they could raise, and involved themselves deeply in debt. Almost the whole burdens of the war in Ameri ca had fallen on the colonies and their exertions were altogether disproportionate to their means, and tended greatly to impover ish and distress them. After eight years' arduous struggles, attended with the greatest sacrifices, the successful termination of the war - the dominion of France in America being relinquish ed forever - occasioned universal joy throughout the colonies; they forgot their sufferings and distresses, in the fair prospects which the peace afforded. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States Navy IN preparing this volume the writer has been animated by a desire to tell, in one convenient volume, that might be sold at a moderate price, the whole story of our navy - to describe all the important naval battles, and to show how the nation has been affected at certain times by the work of its naval ships, and at other times by the want of such a force. All battles that have had any influence upon the wars in which the nation has been engaged, or upon the evolution of ships of war, or upon the character of our naval men, or of the nation, have been deemed important herein. Any con sideration of the facts shows that our sailors were animated, in most of their battles, by the knowledge that they were fighting for the very life of the nation, and it is therefore not too much to say that a description of such a fight must be a hero story, however told. Frankly, it was in the be lief that every history of our navy claims attention first of all as a hero story that this one was written. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Navy During the Rebellion, Vol. 1 With England and France, therefore, the most interesting question connected with our affairs has been, whether we could create a truly formidable Navy. Our naval strength was the standard by which they measured their power to attack, and ours to defend. They did not believe it possible for us to pro duce a Navy in a few months which could both seal up our long line of sea-coast and defy their own most formidable ships, and this mistaken judgment was the main influence in deciding their policy in regard to American affairs. A history of the Navy, then, is a history of that power by which Europe gauges our national importance, and by which our rank among nations is assigned: because, until a true Christian civilization prevails, the nobler attributes of a nation will be overlooked in view of its ability to carry on a great war; and because, if the 'united States should ever wage a great European war, the battles would be mainly upon the seas. While our Army has done a work beyond all praise, and has settled the question of our ability to defend our territory against any force which could be brought here, the Navy has saved us from foreign intervention that could not have been otherwise avoided, while at the same time its labors in putting down the rebellion have been far greater than has been gener ally supposed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Navy and the Nation War-Time Addresses "Full speed ahead!" has been the signal of the Navy from the moment we entered the war. When the call came, it was ready. The plans had all been prepared in advance, and it required only an order to mobilize the Fleet. Far from breaking down under the war strain, the departmental machinery actually speeded up. No change whatever was required in the organization, which easily expanded to meet the immensely increased demands. From admirals to seamen, from Bureau chiefs to clerks, the entire establishment worked together with the spirit of the corps. This "spirit of the Navy" is a very real thing, as all who are brought in contact with the Service know. Everybody "gets into the game" with a dash and eagerness that are infectious, and new elements are quickly assimilated. The apparent ease with which the vast expansion of the Navy was accomplished has caused many to lose sight of the tremendousness of the task and its difficulty.
