Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Concord: Told by Concord Writers The Editor has no apology to make for the miscellaneous character of this volume. She has tried to depict briefly the history of Concord from the Plantation to the present time, as presented in the writings of its own inhabitants. Whether their residence in Concord has been long or short, it has been long enough for some part of the life of the town to be seen and reflected from their own angle of vision. The reader must himself focus the rays to see a true picture of this model New England town. Acknowledgement is due for kind assistance given in the preparation of the work to Mr. Frank B. Sanborn, Judge John S. Keyes, Mr. Frank Preston Stearns, Mrs. Daniel Lothrop, Mr. George Tolman, Mr. Winfred D. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concord Some of the Things to Be Seen There This point of conscience; I the question spurn; The kindliest bosom, exile shall make stern, And days of danger, nights of want and gloom, Brush from the sensibilities the bloom. But at any rate the land was bought and paid for, and its savage grantors were so well satisfied with their bargain, that in all the Indian wars which followed, Concord was almost the only town in the entire colony that never suffered from an Indian raid upon its territory; though, to be sure, one farm was raided and one man was killed in the New Grant, an addition made to the town some years after its settlement, and later set off again. It is commonly held that it was this peaceful mode of set tling its Indian question that gave to the town its name of Concord, a name unknown until that time as the designation of any town, although it has been stated by later inquirers that it was the name that had been given by Peter Bulkeley, long before, to his old English residence at Odell. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Concord This book, while primarily designed to present the points of chief interest in the historical and literary associations of Old Concord, may also be depended upon for its accuracy. Its historical matter I have drawn from the Concord histories of Lemuel Shattuck (1835) and Charles H. Walcott (1884), from the Concord Social Circle Memoirs, from the writings of Grindall Reynolds, and from the publications of the Concord Antiquarian Society, chiefly those by the late George Tolman. For facts concerning Concords literary notables I have drawn principally upon their own writings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fat of the Land: The Story of an American Farm I would never have given up my profession voluntarily; but when it gave me up, I had to accept the dismissal, surrender my ambitions, and fall back upon my primary instinct for di version and happiness. The dismissal came with out warning, like the fall of a tree when no wind shakes the forest, but it was imperative and per emptory. The doctors (and they were among the best in the land) said, NO more of this kind of work for years, and I had to accept their verdict, though I knew that for years meant forever. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concord Authors at Home: Concord the Town Lord Amberly, Arthur Clough, Elizabeth Peabody, Julia Ward Howe, Harriet Martineau and the many kindred souls of that time. Could we go back to the days of the School of Philosophy and its meetings, when those enthusiastic but theoretical Transcendentalists held forth in the little chapel-like building on the Lexington Road, how true a picture would be ours of the Concord that has made for today. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concord and Its Points of Interest The history of Concord as a city dates from 1853, for it was on the tenth of March in that year that the city charter was adopted, it having been granted July 6, 1849, and rejected three times by popular vote, finally being accepted by a majority of 269 in a total vote of 1387. The history of the parish and town is of deep interest but does not properly come within the scope of the present work, which deals especially with the Concord of today and may be considered as a sort of appendix to the complete, authoritative and admirable history of Concord from 1725 to 1853, written by the Rev. Nathaniel Bouton and published in 1856. This is a standard work whose value steadily increases with the passage of time, and we wish here to express our obligations to it for many of the facts presented in the introductory sketch, which by summarizing Concord's development in the past may lead to a more complete understanding of her probable growth in the future. The "History of Merrimack and Belknap Counties," published by J. W. Lewis & Co., of Philadelphia, in 1885, has also been of great service by reason of its clear presentation of facts concerning Concord's later history, and it is to be regretted that the necessarily high cost of that handsomely and substantially gotten up volume of nearly 1000 pages should prevent a copy of it from being owned by every family in the large and important section of which it treats so interestingly and accurately. These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism, and bigotry in our history while downplaying the greatness of America’s patriots and the achievements of “dead white men.” As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington; more about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II than about D-Day or Iwo Jima; more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin. A Patriot’s History of the United States corrects those doctrinaire biases. In this groundbreaking book, America’s discovery, founding, and development are reexamined with an appreciation for the elements of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that make this nation uniquely successful. This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America’s true and proud history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bancroft Prize–winning classic of American history now in a revised and expanded edition with a new preface and afterword by the author. On April 19, 1775, the American Revolution began at the Old North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts. The “shot heard round the world” catapulted this sleepy New England town into the height of revolutionary fervor, and Concord went on to become the intellectual capital of the new republic. The town—future home to Emerson, Thoreau, and Hawthorne—soon came to symbolize devotion to liberty, intellectual freedom, and the stubborn integrity of rural life. In The Minutemen and Their World, Robert A. Gross has written a remarkably subtle and detailed reconstruction of the lives and community of this special place, and a compelling interpretation of the American Revolution as a social movement.
