Forster, she "trips us up like an unnoticed stone" as we stumble through the unaware routines of our lives. "Look " she says, coaxing us to see more deeply and rewardingly into the comradeship of the woods-and she does so in a manner more than merely visual: Her insight operates on a spiritual plane, hinting at richer meanings in these connections. And she offers compelling remarks from other men and women, as diverse as Vincent van Gogh and Albert Einstein, who have understood the wisdom of nature to further deepen the emotional impact of her compelling photographs-now yours to enjoy.

Book excerpt: A Jungian lecturer and astrologer searches for the sacred in the commonplace on a Celtic pilgrimage to the Isle of Iona, in Scotland. "Iona," the Hebrew word for dove, became home to St. Columba, whose name in Latin means dove, in the year 563 on the Eve of the Pentecost -- the day of the ascent of the Holy Spirit in the Christian calendar, also symbolized by a dove. And so the narrative goes on, finding synchronicities of understanding at every turn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1970 a concrete replica of the St John’s Cross arrived in Iona sitting incongruously on the deck of a puffer delivering the island’s annual supply of coal. What is the story behind this intriguing replica? How does it relate to the world’s first ringed ‘Celtic cross’, an artistic and technical masterpiece, which has been at the heart of the Iona experience since the eighth century? What does it tell us about the authenticity and value of replicas? In this fascinating book, Foster and Jones draw on extensive interdisciplinary research to reveal the composite biography of the St John’s Cross, its concrete replica, and its many other scale copies. They show that replicas can acquire rich forms of authenticity and value, informed by social relations, craft practices, creativity, place and materiality. Thus, the book challenges traditional precepts that seek authenticity in qualities intrinsic to original historic objects. Replicas are shown to be important objects in their own right, with their own creative, human histories — biographies that people can connect with. The story of the St John’s Cross celebrates how replicas can ‘work’ for us if we let them, particularly if clues are available about their makers’ passion, creativity and craft.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The Apothecary’s Chest: Magic, Art and Medication’ was a one-day symposium held at the University of Glasgow on November 24, 2007. The symposium called for a discussion on the evolution of the notions of mysticism, knowledge and superstition in the way they are intertwined in both science and the literary imagination in the figure of healers such as the apothecary, the alchemist, the shaman. There were three main areas of interest. The first involved traditional perceptions of physicians, who combined knowledge and superstition and thus bordered, in their practices, on the sphere of the occult. The second theme, evolving from the first, proposed an inquiry of the overlapping interests and processes of science, magic and prophesy, as well as of the implications and consequences of a privileged access to medical knowledge, while the third subject of discussion concentrated on the development of the symbolism of the healer in literature, history, philosophy of science, anthropology, theology, film and art. The twelve papers included in this volume, papers presented by doctoral candidates and young scholars from across a range of geographical regions and disciplines, result in a collection of approaches to an investigative field with topics ranging from mystical traits of mundane materials to the origins of the occult and gender struggles. The thirteenth and final essay included in the volume, Professor Bill Herbert’s ‘From Mere Bellies to the Bad Shaman’, is an exploration of the modern role of the contemporary poet in the form of an extended conversation initiated at the closing of the conference, when Professor Herbert was asked to combine a poetry reading with a few observations on the relationship between the poet and the shaman.
