Book excerpt: Excerpt from The State Works of Pennsylvania What is known technically in the history of Pennsylvania as the state works comprised a system of transportation which was built, owned and operated by the commonwealth. Public works and internal improvements are other names commonly applied to the system. The writer has, therefore, used these three terms interchangeably. The popular movement for the state itself to provide an adequate means Of transportation to the growing West may be said to have commenced in Pennsylvania in 1823. The work of construction was undertaken in 1826 and within a few years an extensive sys tem Of canals and railways was built and in operation. By 1859, however, there was not a single mile of public-owned canal or railway in the commonwealth. It is thus seen that the present study is limited to a definite field which furnishes an historical example Of public ownership and control of a transportation system. Book excerpt: The Keystone State, so nicknamed because it was geographically situated in the middle of the thirteen original colonies and played a crucial role in the founding of the United States, has remained at the heart of American history. Created partly as a safe haven for people from all walks of life, Pennsylvania is today the home of diverse cultures, religions, ethnic groups, social classes, and occupations. Many ideas, institutions, and interests that were formed or tested in Pennsylvania spread across America and beyond, and continue to inform American culture, society, and politics. Pennsylvania: A History of the Commonwealth is the first comprehensive history of the Keystone State in almost three decades. In it distinguished scholars view Pennsylvania's history critically and honestly, setting the Commonwealth's story in the larger context of national social, cultural, economic, and political development. Part I offers a narrative history and Part II offers a series of "Ways to Pennsylvania's Past" -- nine concise guides designed to enable readers to discover Pennsylvania's heritage for themselves. Pennsylvania: A History of the Commonwealth is the result of a unique collaboration between The Pennsylvania State University Press and The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC), the official history agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The result is a remarkable account of how Pennsylvanians have lived, worked, and played through the centuries.

Not only has the state as a governing authority received little attention, but its rela tion to the nation has been viewed in a distorted perspec tive. Naturally the student has come to look on state sovereignty and national supremacy as wholly external to himself, and apart from each other, instead of consonant elements in a great system. An examination of the powers exercised and the duties rendered by those local organs with which he is more or less acquainted by actual contact will enable him toplace both sovereignties in their proper positions with reference to each other. While this brief exposition of the government of Pennsylvania has been prepared to serve as a supplement for those who are already familiar with the important elements of civics, its further purpose is to aid the student to understand the. Pennsylvania in Public Memory attempts to answer that question, exploring the emergence of a heritage culture of industry and its loss through the lens of its most representative industrial state. Based on news coverage, interviews, and more than two hundred heritage sites, this book traces the narrative themes that shape modern public memory of coal, steel, railroading, lumber, oil, and agriculture, and that collectively tell a story about national as well as local identity in a changing social and economic world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of the State of Pennsylvania, Including Local Government A State of the United States. A State is the largest political division of the United States. It has a distinct government of its own established by the people of the State. The first thirteen States of the United States had their origin in the thirteen colonies established by England in this country. Most of the other States had been organized as Territories before their admission into the union. In the United States a State is more distinctly a political organization and at the same time more definitely a member of the union and a part of the national govern ment than in any other nation of the world.
