Book excerpt: Ohio's Criminal Justice System is a comprehensive yet easily understood book for students wishing to examine the criminal justice system in Ohio. An explanation of the basics of the criminal justice system in Ohio, as well as its interaction at several points with the federal criminal justice system, is presented to the reader in order to provide them with a baseline knowledge of Ohio's system of criminal justice. In addition, the book provides a contextual presentation of the operation of criminal justice in general. Ideal for use in undergraduate classrooms, Ohio's Criminal Justice System provides the link missing between the largely fictional "national" criminal justice system, and the student's own experience within the state of Ohio. By linking trends of crime in Ohio to national trends, showing the operations of the police, courts and corrections agencies within Ohio, and addressing state-specific justice elements like drug and veteran's courts, Ohio's Criminal Justice System is the ideal resource for students of the discipline in Ohio. In addition to the comprehensive coverage of the major elements of Ohio's justice system, the book addresses the juvenile courts in Ohio as well as Ohio's use of the death penalty. Ohio's Criminal Justice System marries perfectly with existing introductory texts, and can be an asset to professors and students alike. Book excerpt: The historical study of crime has expanded in criminology during the past few decades, forming an active niche area in social history. Indeed, the history of crime is more relevant than ever as scholars seek to address contemporary issues in criminology and criminal justice. Thus, The Oxford Handbook of the History of Crime and Criminal Justice provides a systematic and comprehensive examination of recent developments across both fields. Chapters examine existing research, explain on-going debates and controversies, and point to new areas of interest, covering topics such as criminal law and courts, police and policing, and the rise of criminology as a field. This Handbook also analyzes some of the most pressing criminological issues of our time, including drug trafficking, terrorism, and the intersections of gender, race, and class in the context of crime and punishment. The definitive volume on the history of crime, The Oxford Handbook of the History of Crime and Criminal Justice is an invaluable resource for students and scholars of criminology, criminal justice, and legal history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even for violent crime, justice should mean more than punishment. By paying close attention to the relational harms suffered by victims, this book develops a concept of relational justice for survivors, offenders and community. Relational justice looks beyond traditional rules of legal responsibility to include the social and emotional dimensions of human experience, opening the way for a more compassionate, effective and just response to crime. The book’s chapters follow a journey from victim experiences of violence to community healing from violence. Early chapters examine the relational harms inflicted by the worst wrongs, the moral responsibility of wrongdoers and common mistakes made in judging wrongdoing. Particular attention is paid here to sexual violence. The book then moves to questions of just punishment: proper sentencing by judges, mandatory sentences approved by the public, and the realities of contemporary incarceration, focusing particularly on solitary confinement and sexual violence. In its remaining chapters, the book looks at changes brought by the victims' rights movement and victim needs that current law does not, and perhaps cannot meet. It then addresses possibilities for offender change and challenges for majority America in addressing race discrimination in criminal justice. The book concludes with a look at how individuals might live out the ideals of a greater—relational—justice.
