Download or read book The American Farmer (Classic Reprint) written by A. M. Simons and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Farmer The history, present problems and probable future evolution of the American farmer are to a large extent unique. Nevertheless he is a part of the great social development of his age to 'a greater extent than the farmers of any other nation past or present. These facts render the voluminous European literature on the agrarian question of little value to the student of American agricultural problems save as it deals with the most general phases of the subject. European conditions are still largely influenced by the survivals of feudalism. The great estates trace their origin to this social stage. Hundreds of details affecting the present relation of land lord and tenant descend from the days of lord and serf. Book Synopsis For the Health of the Land by : Aldo Leopold
Download or read book For the Health of the Land written by Aldo Leopold and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-07-16 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aldo Leopold's classic work A Sand County Almanac is widely regarded as one of the most influential conservation books of all time. In it, Leopold sets forth an eloquent plea for the development of a "land ethic" -- a belief that humans have a duty to interact with the soils, waters, plants, and animals that collectively comprise "the land" in ways that ensure their well-being and survival. For the Health of the Land, a new collection of rare and previously unpublished essays by Leopold, builds on that vision of ethical land use and develops the concept of "land health" and the practical measures landowners can take to sustain it. The writings are vintage Leopold -- clear, sensible, and provocative, sometimes humorous, often lyrical, and always inspiring. Joining them together are a wisdom and a passion that transcend the time and place of the author's life. The book offers a series of forty short pieces, arranged in seasonal "almanac" form, along with longer essays, arranged chronologically, which show the development of Leopold's approach to managing private lands for conservation ends. The final essay is a never before published work, left in pencil draft at his death, which proposes the concept of land health as an organizing principle for conservation. Also featured is an introduction by noted Leopold scholars J. Baird Callicott and Eric T. Freyfogle that provides a brief biography of Leopold and places the essays in the context of his life and work, and an afterword by conservation biologist Stanley A. Temple that comments on Leopold's ideas from the perspective of modern wildlife management. The book's conservation message and practical ideas are as relevant today as they were when first written over fifty years ago. For the Health of the Land represents a stunning new addition to the literary legacy of Aldo Leopold.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New England Farmer Winter is upon us; mid-winter. Perhaps the snow lies deep in field and forest; too deep for comfortable chopping or safe team ing. Perhaps the January thaw has flooded icy roads; the south wind is drifting worlds of vapor to the north, or is gradually veering round to give us a nor'wester to-morrow that will make all loose things clatter again. We cannot tell. Obliged to anticipate, we lose something of the inspiration which might be caught, if writing these notices of the Months amidst their peculiar characteristics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farmer's Guest, and Other Rhymes The Farmer. He was a prosperous farmer, a man just passing his prime; And still a husky fellow who was always pressing the time. From early morning hours his pace would weary a fox, He worked with a three man power as patiently as an Ox. He had the mind of a Plato, the loins of Hercules; He had the smile of a master and the art of working with ease. He could laugh at rain out of season and grin each day of the drouth; Was always on taps at meal time and seldom down in the mouth. For years, perhaps about forty, he fought with weather and soil; Attained success as a farmer and had considerable spoil. He was not classed as a Christian, for he never joined the church; And he had slipped his religion beyond the clergyman's perch. He was very exact in observing and ever playing his game, For coining some good farm proverbs he won considerable fame. He worked over time sufficient to take his turn at the bat; And found some time for picnics and fairs and frolics like that. He missed the school at Corvallis, and so for labor was fit; Nor asked his State to provide him a well filled government teat. At night when he hit the pillow he slept the sleep of the kind, A more real likeable fellow is not so easy to find. His Wife. His wife just baffles description, her soul of infinite worth; Made home a branch of her heaven, that filled its mission on earth. She laid upon love's great altar, in spite of the work of years, A group of five little Yankees, the fruit of her hopeful tears. She thought her John was a wonder, a real Goliath of Gath, And both were strong in their loving and walked side-by-side in life's path. Book Synopsis Legislation Relating to Farmers' Institutes in the United States (Classic Reprint) by : John Hamilton
Download or read book Legislation Relating to Farmers' Institutes in the United States (Classic Reprint) written by John Hamilton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legislation Relating to Farmers' Institutes in the United States In order that legislation by the several States relating to the organ ization of farmers' institutes might be generally accessible to institute directors and workers, Copies of the laws under which the institutes were organized were secured by this office in 1903 and were arranged and published as Bulletin No. 135 of the Office of Experiment Stations. A revision of this bulletin was made August 1, 1905, embodying such modifications of the laws as had occurred since August 1, 1903. Since the date of this revision the institute laws in most of the States have been so modified by subsequent enactment as to make a second revision necessary. Copies of the old laws were accordingly sent to the several State directors of farmers' institutes with the request that where changes have occurred copies of the new laws be forwarded to this office to be inserted in the revised bulletin. The present revision includes legislation in force April 1, 1911. An examination of the institute laws of the several States reveals the fact that while they differ in their form and requirements as well as in the authority which they confer and the amount of money which they appropriate, yet they are one in their purpose to aid farming people by affording them opportunity to secure the latest and most reliable information relating to agriculture and to receive definite instructions through a living teacher as to the application of these truths in their every-day practice.
