Book excerpt: Fervency, exhilaration, trepidation and death face Collin Farley, a young Colorado rancher, who flew his aircraft through its paces in the skies over the South Pacific against overwhelming Japanese forces during the early days of World War II. The sound of aircraft engines and the firing of the 37mm canon vibrate in his ears. Tender moments under the stars on the beach of the Coral Sea where he finds love during the throes of war wrench his heart, yet the camaraderie on a Pacific island maintains his sanity. From the shooting down the private plane of Admiral Yamamoto, the master-planner of Pearl Harbor attack, to viewing performances of the Swan Lake in Melbourne, Australia, to attending high level meetings with Generals MacArthur and Kenney, the reader is swept back to 1942-43. Emotions, loves and passions soar high over the azure waters of the Solomon Sea and in the Grand Opera House with the performances of Antoinette de la Fevbre. The men and women of the Fifth Air Force lived these campaigns, loved under the Southern Cross and died in the blue waters of the Coral Sea. This dynamic epic saga explicitly comes alive through the pages of this novel.

Book excerpt: The Star of the South, originally published in 1884, takes us back to Africa again; but not the Africa of Verne?s first success Five Weeks in a Balloon, nor of his tragic slave tale Dick Sands. Those dealt with the Africa of the negro. This tale is of the Africa of the white man. The diamond region and the diamond mines are fully and close depicted, so are the rough and hard types of men who make their way there.Among these is presented, in singular contrast, the educated young French engineer, a man, a gentleman, and a scientist. Verne has drawn few better characters than this of Victor Cyprien. Though perhaps one may be permitted to suggest that Cyprien?s altruism is scarcely convincing. The love which twice surrenders its beloved, rather than transgress the conventions of a social world with which neither love is any longer associated, seems to us a rather feeble one. The indifference to wealth which, while watching other men gather diamonds all around, can only puzzle over their desire, and be contemptuous of their madness, is as little French as it is American. The easy deception of the engineer into the idea that he has manufactured a giant diamond, may be accepted by the not too critical reader as the necessary foundation of the story, which is certainly bright, mystifying, and interesting in the extreme. Africa had been treated so seriously in the earlier tales, that one is glad to find Verne here playing with it in the scenes where his people ride ostriches and giraffes, are borne aloft by trapped birds, and leave the manufacture of their artificial diamonds to dodge one another murderously across country.

A masterpiece of technical exposition, it was the basic textbook of astronomy for more than a thousand years, and still is the main source for our knowledge of ancient astronomy. This translation, based on the standard Greek text of Heiberg, makes the work accessible to English readers in an intelligible and reliable form. It contains numerous corrections derived from medieval Arabic translations and extensive footnotes that take account of the great progress in understanding the work made in this century, due to the discovery of Babylonian records and other researches. It is designed to stand by itself as an interpretation of the original, but it will also be useful as an aid to reading the Greek text.

Book excerpt: In this heartfelt tale about enduring hope amid the suffering of the Great Depression, Sean Dietrich—also known as Sean of the South—weaves together a tale featuring a cast of characters ranging from a child preacher, a teenage healer, and two migrant workers who give everything they have for their chosen family. When fifteen-year-old Marigold becomes pregnant during the Great Depression, she is rejected by her family and forced to fend for herself. She is arrested while trying to steal food and loses her baby in the forest, turning her whole world upside down. She’s even more distraught upon discovering she has an inexplicable power to heal, making her a sought-after local legend. Meanwhile, middle-aged migrant workers Vern and Paul discover a violet-eyed baby abandoned in the woods and take it upon themselves to care for her. The men continue their search for work and soon pair up with a poverty-stricken widow, plus her two children, and the misfit family begins taking care of each other. As survival brings this chosen family together, a young boy finds himself without a friend to his name as the dust storms rage across Kansas. Fourteen-year-old Coot, a child preacher, is on the run from his abusive tent-revival pastor father with thousands of stolen dollars—and the only thing he’s sure of is that Mobile, Alabama, is his destination. In a sweeping saga with a looming second world war, these stories intertwine in surprising ways, reminding us that when the dust clears, we can still see the stars. Stand-alone Southern historical fiction set during the Great Depression Book length: approximately 98,000 words Includes discussion questions for book clubs Also by Sean Dietrich: The Incredible Winston Browne
