Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stamp Milling of Gold OresThe matter thus collected is rather a painstaking description of practice than a discussion of the chemistry and mechanics of the stamp-milling process. It Will, therefore, it is believed, be serviceable to those engaged in the actual work of the mill, no less than to the student in the laboratory or lecture room.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The blanket washings are very poor. The North Cornish mill is not in the town of Ballarat, though in the mining district of that name, but at Daylesford. The plant consists of 50 stamps, and the rate of drop varies from 70 to 75 per minute, the height of the drop being 8 inches. The depth of discharge or issue is extremely irregular. When starting with new dies or false bottoms the top of the die is approximately level with the bottom of the grating and the depth of discharge is practically nil, but as the dies wear down (they are 4 inches deep) the issue in Near the famous Canadian lead, which yielded so many of the large nuggets. creases to a maximum of a little over 3 inches. The mill crushes 90 long tons per day, or 2,450 tons per month. The amalgamation is effected by methods similar to those described as in use at the Star of the East. Scarcely 11 per cent. of the amalgam obtained comes from the mortar boxes. Much the largest proportion is derived from the skimmings of the wells and in the blanket sands. The latter are treated by Eerdan pans, of which there are six. The tailings from the Berdans go to a Frue vanner for after-treatment. This is a comparatively new mill, the oldest portion being five and the newest two years old. The quantity of ore in sight in the mine is such as to have led to the consideration of a further addition to the number of stamps. The mine has paid large dividends for alongperiod.f Notwithstanding these facts the mill is miserably incomplete. Although very favorably situated and having all the fall required for an automatic arrangement of its parts, it is unprovided with rockbreakers or self-feeders. In the feeding of the 50 stamps there are employed upon each shift 5 men at 30 shillings per week, ..

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Gold Milling The process of differentiation, so essentially characteristic of all modern development, has of recent years extended very markedly into the province of the gold-miner. The time is not so long past since any ordinary miner was considered to be quite capable of taking a shift in the mill, and it was looked upon as part of his duty to be equally useful above and below ground. This state of things did well enough as long as rich reefs or rich portions of reefs, such as the superficial portions not uncommonly are, were alone worked; enough gold was won to more than pay expenses, and no one knew or even seemed to care how great the loss might be in the mill. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Stamp-Milling and Amalgamation: With a Chapter on Arrangement and Construction Costs of Stamp-Mills When I first engaged in stamp-milling and amalgamation, like many others I eagerly and unsuccessfully sought for a treatise that would tell me what to do and why - that would give the ideas and principles by which millmen were to be guided, and the methods found to be most satisfactory. Later the subject of examining ores and the adjusting of the stamp-mill to their requirements became of interest. The first edition of this book incorporated my experience and conclusions along the above lines, and the knowledge gathered from other millmen and metallurgists with whom I had associated. Since then I have been engaged in many widely separated parts of the metal-mining regions of the United States, and have had further opportunity to observe stamp-mill practice and to discuss the subject with millmen and metallurgists. During this time I have also prepared a work on standard cyanide practice. As a result the third edition of this book is an entire revision and enlargement that has been illustrated with 77 carefully selected cuts and drawings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stamp Milling: A Treatise on Practical Stamp Milling and Stamp Mill Construction Like many other millmen engaged in the practical operation and construction of stamp mills I have eagerly sought the experiences of others in the same line of work. These experiences as well as those of my own are set forth in this treatise. Those to whom I have not given credit while using their ideas I beg to apologize. It is an oversight. A writer has recently remarked that the catalogues issued by the makers of mining machinery are text-books on the subject. I have freely used this material to make my ideas plain. It is hoped that this collection of experiences will stimulate the student to further studies along the same line of work and will help the practical millman to give an intelligent interest to his work. The sooner the millman recognizes that there is something to attain beyond his mere wages the sooner will the amalgamating of the precious metals be classed among the fine arts. I hope I have helped at least in a small degree to attain this end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mechanical Reduction of Gold Ores by the Crawford Mill It is not necessary to dwell upon the extreme importance today, to every human industry, of an invention which would considerably diminish the Cost of producing Gold; not only would the min ing camps of' the Rocky Mountains and Brazil, of Africa, Siberia and India emerge from a long era Of disappointed expectation. But a largely increased production of the precious metal may be relied on to stimulate every department of human activity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Milling of Gold Quartz Dear sir My last paper to the State Geological Society on The Milling of Gold Quartz, wherein I tried to describe the process of simple amalgamation of the raw pyritic matter in wooden barrels, appears from the great number of letters that I have received respecting it, after its publication in the Mining and Scientific Press, to have attracted considerable attention, and has, therefore, encouraged me to resume the subject, but this time as a contribution to the State Mining Bureau; you having kindly offered to allow the specimens accompanying this paper, and intended to illustrate whati have stated, to remain for a short time at the rooms of the Mining Bureau, to give those who feel interested in the mat ter a chance of examining them. You have also promised to put some very important and interesting specimens from your private collection with them. I can only now repeat what I have stated on a former occasion, that at the present time I think scarcely anything can be of greater importance to the mining interests of this State, than a simple and cheap mode of extracting the gold from low grade veinstone, and the determination Of the true condition of the ores associated with it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Losses in Gold Amalgamation: With Notes on the Concentration of Gold and Silver Ores It is certain that new machines and new processes are, and will be, given attention by mining men in proportion to their probable merits; but the proper place for experiments is in a mill already as suc cessful as known processes can be made. In a new enterprise, even when the expense of an experiment is undertaken by the inventor, the loss to the mine owner in case of failure must be very great, both in time and general running expenses. Directors should not believe that a willingness to risk cash in proving an invention is necessarily any proof of value of the same it is only a measure of the faith of the inventor, which is hardly a safe standard by which to risk shareholders' money.
