Book excerpt: In the 1930s, the Federal Writers' Project sent mostly anonymous writers, but also Zora Neale Hurston and Stetson Kennedy, into the depths of Florida to reveal its splendor to the world. The FWP and the State of Florida jointly published the results as Florida: A Guide to the Southernmost State, which included twenty-two driving tours of the state's main roads. Eventually, after Eisenhower built the interstates, drivers bypassed the small towns that thrived along these roads in favor of making better time. Those main roads are now the state's backroads—forgotten by all but local residents, a few commuters, and dedicated road-trippers. Retracing the original routes in the Guide, Cathy Salustri rekindles our notions of paradise by bringing a modern eye to the historic travelogues. Salustri's 5,000-mile road trip reveals a patchwork quilt of Florida cultures: startling pockets of history and environmental bliss stitched against the blight of strip malls and franchise restaurants. Paddling grew steadily in Florida due in part to these excellent guidebooks, establishment of paddling clubs, positioning of outfitters on rivers, and population growth. More people explored new waterways, not only in new kayaks made of varied plastic but also ultra-lightweight canoes easy to paddle and transport. More recently, a rise in the use of recreational kayaks has led to a rebirth of paddling's popularity. In 2004, Molloy worked on a new consolidated paddling guide to Florida and refloated previously covered rivers, checking access points, and floated new waterways to highlight newer opportunities for Florida paddlers. Several new wilderness streams were added to the book. In the new 2007 edition, Molloy and Elizabeth Carter added a few more streams, and revised the maps for easier use. For over 20 years, Menasha Ridge Press's Canoeing & Kayaking Florida has provided the essential information needed to paddle the waterways of the Sunshine State.

A surveying party scouting routes for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad discovered the area in 1881 and decided it was the perfect setting for a town. Named for Frederick DeFuniak, a prominent official of the railroad, the town of DeFuniak Springs was born. Among the settlement's first visitors was a representative of the New York Chautauqua, who was seeking a location for a winter assembly. The first Florida Chautauqua Assembly was later held on the bank of Lake DeFuniak in the winter of 1885. Until the 1920s, DeFuniak Springs was hailed as a cultural and educational center of the Southeast. Today the city remains a popular destination thanks to its continued focus on cultural events and the Victorian architecture for which the town has come to be widely known. In 1992, the DeFuniak Springs Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places thanks to the efforts of the Walton County Heritage Association.
