Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sporting Magazine, 1831, Vol. 77: Or Monthly Calendar, of the Transactions of the Turf, the Chase, and Every Other Diversion, Interesting to the Man of Pleasure, Enterprise and Spirit He would, doubtless, have been a scholar of no mean acquire ments had he remained a sufh cient time at his studies but hap pening to be taken from school at eighteen, the poor fellow had no chance. I remember that, although we started in the classics toge ther, and I was no fire-eater, I was construing Horace while he was wearing out his second Cor derius, and conjugating amo with infinitely more complacency than success. His attempts at conj tion in after-life were eq y unfortunate, since he lost an 0 rtunity of getting a rich wife, ause, although he made three several attempts on as many days, he could neveeanage to get to church within canonical hours. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Sporting Magazine, Vol. 3: May, 1832 We have lost one of our best riders in the Lambton Hunt, in the person of Mr. John S - toe, who is going to show the green collars the way to hunt in Hunts, and join Messrs. Crofts, Nash, and the other hard-riding black coats that inhabit those parts. Still we have got some left (though the entry of young sportsmen is not very promising), and it will take good men to beat Messrs. G - g-n, Robert S - toe, Har 1 - d, or Mr. H - nd - son, who is a forward man in the field in every sense of the word, though his style of riding is neither cal culated hr the country nor adapted to his stable. Besides these, we have some very great sportsmen at Newcastle. There is one that we call the Count, who talks very big about hunting, as though he went out every day, and when he does go, turns out in great form, yet he would as lief see the devil found as a fox; and there is another, who, when he rides to see the hounds throw ofi', puts his horse into the nearest stable to the place for fear of being thrown of himself, though, to do him justice, he does not pretend to be a fox hunter, which the other does. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Turf Register and Sporting Magazine, Vol. 2: September, 1830, to August, 1831 The Barbary horse, though in all probability originally descended from an Arabian stock, is neither so handsome nor tall, but stronger, and carries a greater depth of carcass than the Arabian. He has a shorter back, a stronger loin, and' a fuller flank; is tractable, docile, and sure-footed; not very spirited, but when urged will discover good speed and vigour, and excellent wind; and when running he runs closer and strides better than the Arabian; and his colour is more usually white. The Turkish horse is longer, taller, and handsomer than the Barbs; though he has, probably, in common With them, an origin from the Arabians. He possesses good speed, spirit, and unfailing Wind, and can undergo much labour and fatigue. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
