Book excerpt: Dante Alighieri was early in recognizing that our age has a problem. His hometown, Florence, was at the epicenter of the move from the medieval world to the modern. He realized that awareness of divine reality was shifting, and that if it were lost, dire consequences would follow. The Divine Comedy was born in a time of troubling transition, which is why it still speaks today. Dante's masterpiece presents a cosmic vision of reality, which he invites his readers to traverse with him. In this narrative retelling and guide, from the gates of hell, up the mountain of purgatory, to the empyrean of paradise, Mark Vernon offers a vivid introduction and interpretation of a book that, 700 years on, continues to open minds and change lives.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spiritual Sense of Dante's Divina Commedia To this essay on the spiritual significance of the "Divina Cornmedia" I prefix a few words, interesting only to the few who study works of literature for spiritual insight. Such insight is of very slow growth, and though I cannot be permitted to claim anything more than a very feeble approach to it in the reflections which I bring forward here, yet I know that the theme dignifies the writer, and that the circumstances of a struggle to attain a high object are worthy of mention, even if the success of the struggle is not great. My first reading in Dante began as early as 1858, and continued at intervals for four years, by which time I had completed only the "Inferno," studying it superficially in the original and using Carlyle's translation as a sort of dictionary and general guide to its meaning - perhaps better described in college slang as a "pony" or "crib." I read also the translations of Wright and Cary of the "Purgatorio" and "Paradiso" at this time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dante Life In these years we are living through a period that seems the handiwork of the Spirit of Evil, as if the Almighty had said to Satan, Put forth thine hand, behold all that man hath is within thy power, and we turn to the great spiritual leaders of the world as never before. For many the traditional doctrines of Christianity have lost much, or all, of their power; the comfort that depends upon supernatural virtue has lost its soothing; and the precepts of Stoicism are not enough to give us courage to look upon the world as we see it. We must have some ideal world in our mind's eye, on the creation of which we may labor and sacrifice ourselves. In order to do this we must get Spiritual power where we can; and Dante stands ready to help us. Not only now, but in the years after the war we shall all need spiritual sup port, for history seems to teach that after great wars people turn their minds to material things, to eating, drinking, and being merry, to the acceptance of luxury, ease, and comfort as the goal of man, and shut their eyes to things of the spirit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teachings of Dante One hot summer's morning several years ago, wishing to make more enjoyable a day of leisure, I searched through a friend's library for an interesting book to take into the woods. Most of the volumes, being upon theology and philosophy, appeared too dry and heavy. Finally, I selected Longfellow's translation of Dante's "Inferno," for the three-fold reason that I had little knowledge of the illustrious Italian, the book itself was attractive, and the title seemed to accord with the heat of the day. No sooner, however, had I begun to read than indolence changed to an absorbed attention. The uniqueness of the theme, the vividness of Dante's pictures, the beauty of Longfellow's translation fascinated me. The book became a constant companion during the summer, and when the work of the year began the spell of Dante's great personality was upon me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dante and AquinasThe purpose of this book is, in the first instance, to bring out this special significance of Dante's work by helping to throw out its distinctive features against the background of the accepted and authoritative exposition of the received philo sophy and theology of his time, while at the same time enriching his utterances by relating them to the implications and presuppositions on which they are grounded. But I trust that the sketch of the scholastic philosophy, and especially of the teaching of Aquinas, necessarily subordinate as it is, may have some independent value, and may be found useful to many whose interest, or at the lowest curiosity, has been roused in relation to mediaeval philosophy, and who do not know where to turn for a disinterested and popular treat ment of the subject free from all propagandis't or polemical intention.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Join Father Paul Pearson of the Oratory as he guides you on a spiritual journey through one of the great classics of Christian literature, Dante's Purgatorio. Purgatory is the least understood of the three possible "destinations" when we die (though unlike heaven or hell it is not an eternal one) and is mysterious to many Christians and even to many Catholics today. As he did in his first volume in the Spiritual Direction from Dante trilogy, Avoiding the Inferno, Father Pearson adroitly draws out the great spiritual insights hidden in The Divine Comedy. Learn how and why: Dante's presentation of Purgatory is something beautifully hopeful. Freedom is the dominant theme here and the rejoicing of captives delivered from their prisons the dominant tone. Purgatory is filled with good people, people well on their way to becoming saints. They are increasingly concerned for one another and generous, the more so the higher on the mountain they climb. They are interested in one another's well-being and rejoice in one another's victories as though they were their own. The sufferings on Mount Purgatory are not something that happens to the souls there; they happen for them. This has all been designed for their benefit, and they are grateful to God for making it possible. Purgatory is God's merciful plan for allowing us to rediscover the joy and freedom of being human, the joy for which we were created but which sin has smothered and distorted. This is what we can be. This is what we can begin to be, even now, if only we will separate ourselves from sin. What are we waiting for? Join Father Pearson in Ascending Mount Purgatory.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Paradise of Dante Amilton mabie says that it is pos 'sible to spend years of study on what may be called the externals of the Divine; Com media, and remain unaffected in nature by this contact with one of the masterpieces of the spirit of man. It is also possible to so absorb Dante's thought and so saturate one's self with the life of the poem as to add to one's individual capital of thought and experience all that the poet discerned in that deep heart of his and wrought out of that intense and tragic experience. Still studying Dante? Was the question of a Visitor of Lowell. Yes, always studying Dante, was the reply of one of the greatest scholars America has produced.
