Book Synopsis The Spirit-Paraclete in the Gospel of John by : George Johnston
Download or read book The Spirit-Paraclete in the Gospel of John written by George Johnston and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-06 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to make a contribution to the New Testament doctrine of the Spirit, with special reference to the paraclete problem. Dr Johnston begins with the use of the word 'spirit' in the Gospel of John and treats it as primarily 'impersonal'. It denotes divine power or energy. God acts by his spirit, both to create and to redeem. The Fourth Evangelist shows Jesus as the incarnate Word, a man uniquely inspired, whose absence after death is compensated for by an outburst of spiritual powers in his Church. The paraclete is representative of God or of Christ, and the Johannine teaching is that no angelmediator, no holy 'spirit' like the Archangel Michael, can take Christ's place. But truly inspired leaders - acting as teachers, exegetes, martyrs - and the inspired Church itself as a communion of love do embody the spirit-paraclete and do continue to represent Jesus. Special attention is paid to recent research on this subject, mainly in the area of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Dr Johnston argues that in insisting that the true spirit-paraclete must always exalt and interpret Jesus of Nazareth as the final revelation of God in man, John was in fact combating heretical views.

Download or read book John's Gospel written by Ralph F. Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel written by the Beloved Disciple St. Augustine once said about the Gospel of John, that, "It is shallow enough for a child not to drown, yet deep enough for an elephant to swim in it." John contains the Bible's favorite verse - John 3:16. John's themes are essential to our understanding of Jesus as Son of God and Messiah. Here we learn about the Holy Spirit, the Counselor who lives within us to guide and empower us. We learn about the Father's love and eternal life. Some of the most beloved stories of Jesus' ministry are found only in the Fourth Gospel -- changing the water into wine, the woman at the well, the woman taken in adultery, raising Lazarus, washing the disciples' feet, and many more. In John's Gospel you find Jesus as the Bread of Life; the Light of the World; the Good Shepherd; the Way, the Truth, and the Life. John's Gospel is lengthy - 21 chapters, but rich and deep. Each chapter concludes with a summary of lessons for disciples to ponder. This study's helpful thought and discussion questions make it useful for personal enrichment and by small groups and classes. Extensive research contained in the footnotes makes it a goldmine for teachers and a boon to preachers involved in sermon preparation.

Book Synopsis The God of the Gospel of John by : Marianne Meye Thompson
Download or read book The God of the Gospel of John written by Marianne Meye Thompson and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2001-10-09 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there are numerous studies of God in the Old Testament, the concept of God has largely been ignored as a subject of inquiry in contemporary New Testament theology. As this superb work by Marianne Meye Thompson shows, however, an understanding of the identity of God is central to the New Testament, particularly to the Gospel of John. Thompson here offers the first comprehensive study of the concept of God in John's Gospel. She shows that one must first grasp the importance of God to John before one can properly appreciate the Gospel's Christology and overarching message. By arguing that John is rightly understood to be a "theocentric" work, Thompson challenges the prevailing theory that John is primarily concerned with Christology. While Thompson uses traditional historical and exegetical approaches to the New Testament and ancient sources, her study is mainly theological in scope. She asks how John portrays God and how, after reading the Gospel, we ought to speak of the identity of God. Unlike many recent studies of John, this one does not try to reconstruct the history behind the text but, rather, tries to fully illumine the theological content of John's message. A seminal study with lasting implications for New Testament theology, The God of the Gospel of John will become a standard text for students of the New Testament.

Uniting rigorous exegesis with theological and pastoral insight, it makes a substantive contribution to contemporary Johannine scholarship.
Book Synopsis Giver of Life by : Fr. John W. Oliver
Download or read book Giver of Life written by Fr. John W. Oliver and published by Paraclete Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the Orthodox perspective on who the Holy Spirit is, where the mystery of God comes alive. Delving deep and subtly into Orthodox tradition and theology, The Giver of Life articulates the identity of the Holy Spirit as the third Person of the Trinity as well as the role of the Holy Spirit in the salvation of the world. Written with a poetic sensibility, Fr. Oliver begins with Pentecost, an event uniquely celebrated in Orthodoxy as a time when greenery of all kinds is brought into churches. "The splash of green foliage calls to mind not just life, but a special kind of life. It is the life that transcends biological existence and flows from the very Godhead Itself; it is life that's a state of being—immortal, everlasting, changeless. Ferns and flowers fade and die, but souls filled with this ‘life from above' flourish forever." Reflecting on the relationship of the Holy Spirit to the Church, to the world, and to the human person, Giver of Life looks to the impressive biblical and liturgical tradition of Orthodox Christianity. This is a book weighty in content but accessible in tone, not an academic study of the mind, but a lived experience of the heart.
