But when your fiancé is Richard Blakemore, the man hiding behind the steel mask of the mysterious vigilante only known as the Silencer, even such simple wishes are often thwarted. And so Constance finds herself stood up at the ball, while Richard is out hunting Baron Tormento, a villain who terrorizes the city and blackmails powerful men – by torturing young girls to death. At first, it's just another case for the Silencer, albeit a particularly grisly one. But it quickly gets personal, when Richard's friend police captain Justin O'Grady is kidnapped. And soon Constance finds herself facing Baron Tormento's spikes of death… This is a novelette of 14700 words or approx. 45 print pages in the Silencer series, but may be read as a standalone.

Book Synopsis The Spike Lee Brand by : Delphine Letort
Download or read book The Spike Lee Brand written by Delphine Letort and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare look at Spike Lees creative appropriation of the documentary film genre. In this groundbreaking book, Delphine Letort sheds light on a neglected part of Spike Lees filmmaking by offering a rare look at his creative engagement with the genre of documentary filmmaking. Ranging from history to sports and music, Lee has tackled a diversity of topics in such nonfiction films as 4 Little Girls, A Huey P. Newton Story, Jim Brown: All-American, and When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts. Letort analyzes the narrative and aesthetic discourses that structure these films and calls attention to Lees technical skills and narrative-framing devices. Drawing on film and media studies, African American studies, and cultural theories, she examines the sociological value of Lees investigations into contemporary culture and also explores the ethics of his commitment to a genre characterized by its claim to truth. The Spike Lee Brand makes a very important contribution to scholarly studies on the film-work of Spike Lee [and] places Lee in the pantheon of important social political documentarians such as Claude Lanzmann and Emile de Antonio. from the Foreword by Mark A. Reid

Book Synopsis Church People in the Struggle by : James F. Findlay
Download or read book Church People in the Struggle written by James F. Findlay and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1960s, the mainstream Protestant churches responded to an urgent need by becoming deeply involved with the national black community in its struggle for racial justice. The National Council of Churches (NCC), as the principal ecumenical organization of the national Protestant religious establishment, initiated an active new role by establishing a Commission on Religion and Race in 1963. Focusing primarily on the efforts of the NCC, this is the first study by an historian to examine the relationship of the predominantly white, mainstream Protestant Churches to the Civil Rights movement. Drawing on hitherto little-used and unknown archival resources and extensive interviews with participants, Findlay documents the churches' committed involvement in the March on Washington in 1963, the massive lobbying effort to secure passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, their powerful support of the struggle to end legal segregation in Mississippi, and their efforts to respond to the Black Manifesto and the rise of black militancy before and during 1969. Findlay chronicles initial successes, then growing frustration as the events of the 1960s unfolded and the national liberal coalition, of which the churches were a part, disintegrated. While never losing sight of the central, indispensable role of the African-American community, Findlay's study for the first time makes clear the highly significant contribution made by liberal religious groups in the turbulent, exciting, moving, and historic decade of the 1960s.
