Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish Royal Tapestries IN point of size, scope and general interest, this little book is perhaps the least considerable of the score of volumes comprised in The Spanish Series, but the collection would have lacked something of the completeness I have endeavoured to secure for it, if the subject of which it treats had not been included. As is inevitable in a series of this kind, many of the books are devoted to aspects and monu ments of Spanish history and achievement, which have served the purpose of writers in all ages, but which could not, on that account, be omitted, while others have an imperative claim to inclusion on the ground that, though of secondary importance, they have never been dealt with elsewhere. The Tapestries which are here reproduced in greater number and variety than has hitherto been attempted are known to students and Connoisseurs the world over, but the measure of that knowledge is limited. Many of the pieces in the possession of the Spanish Crown were acquired by purchase or inheritance, and others were woven in the Nether lands to the command of its Burgundian rulers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tapestries and Carpets: From the Palace of the Pardo, Woven at the Royal Manfactory of Madrid The Trustees of the Hispanic Society of America take pleasure in presenting a col lection of tapestries and carpets from the Royal Manufactory of Madrid, loaned through the courtesy of His Majesty the King of Spain and sent to this country in charge of the Marquis of Valverde. The larger number of these tapestries, from designs by Francisco Goya and others, had not been removed from the walls of the Royal Palace of the Pardo since their completion from the original cartoons in the I 8th century. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tapestries of the Vienna Imperial Court Works of Brussels of the loth to the 18th century take far the most prominent place in this collection. It is almost entirely lacking however in such Brussels specimens of the end of the 15m, and beginning of the 16th century, in which Gothic tradition still prevails; a splendid array of such are the pride of the Royal Spanish Collection. Next to the Brussels works a number of first-rate Parisian Gobelin series are worthy of mention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Majismo, a cultural phenomenon that embodied the popular aesthetic in Spain from the second half of the eighteenth century, served as a vehicle to “regain” Spanish heritage. As expressed in visual representations of popular types participating in traditional customs and wearing garments viewed as historically Spanish, majismo conferred on Spanish “citizens” the pictorial ideal of a shared national character. In Framing Majismo, Tara Zanardi explores nobles’ fascination with and appropriation of the practices and types associated with majismo, as well as how this connection cultivated the formation of an elite Spanish identity in the late 1700s and aided the Bourbons’ objective to fashion themselves as the legitimate rulers of Spain. In particular, the book considers artistic and literary representations of the majo and the maja, purportedly native types who embodied and performed uniquely Spanish characteristics. Such visual examples of majismo emerge as critical and contentious sites for navigating eighteenth-century conceptions of gender, national character, and noble identity. Zanardi also examines how these bodies were contrasted with those regarded as “foreign,” finding that “foreign” and “national” bodies were frequently described and depicted in similar ways. She isolates and uncovers the nuances of bodily representation, ultimately showing how the body and the emergent nation were mutually constructed at a critical historical moment for both.
