It will, moreover, be noted that all titles and quo tations from the texts of early colonial writers are given in modernized Spanish. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish Conquest in America, Vol. 1 of 4: And Its Relation to the History of Slavery and to the Government of Colonies So far as the personal element is concerned, brevity must always be the chief merit of an Introduction to a reprint of a work by a dead writer, because an Editor can never entirely enter into the author's mind, and, in dilating on his views, is more likely to distort than to represent them. In this case, especially, there is little to say about Hie Spanish Conquest in America, since the reading world has long shown its appreciation of the work by seeking it at an enhanced price, a final award more practical than any set eulogy. One of the foremost of living American historians has described it as "a book that it does the soul good to read"; and whether the reader agrees, or disagrees, with some of the author's views, he will at least determine that it is the work of a scholar and a Christian gentleman - two qualifications not always united in the historian - and therefore a formative influence, as all such books are, in the growth of the moral forces silently directing humanity towards higher ideals. Inevitably, in a history dealing with many races and many nations, extending over centuries of time, and covering a field including both the old and new worlds, there must be divers matters both in facts and conclusions in which the author will lay himself open to criticism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mission as a Frontier Institution in the Spanish-American Colonies One of the marvels in the history of the modern world is the way in which that little Iberian nation, Spain, when most of her blood and treasure were absorbed in European wars, with a hand ful of men took possession of the Caribbean archipelago, and' by rapid yet steady advance spread her culture, her religion, her law, and her language over more than half of the two American continents, where they still are dominant and still are secure - in South America, Central America, and a large fraction of North America, for fifty million people in America to-day are tinged with Spanish blood, still speak the Spanish language, still worship at the altar set up by the Catholic kings, still live under laws essentially Spanish, and still possess a culture largely inherited from Spain. Book excerpt: Van Middledyk's work was the first major historical study of Puerto Rico in English. Van Middledyk advanced Puerto Rican historiography by building on the works of Brau, Coll y Toste, and Acosta, and by consulting early Spanish chronicles. A librarian at the Free Public Library of San Juan, Van Middledyk possessed knowledge of and access to considerable primary source material. His history is sympathetic to the Indians and highly critical of Spanish colonial administration. Coming in the wake of American military occupation, the book sought to explain and justify control of the island by the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish Conquest in America and Its Relation, Vol. 2: To the History of Slavery and to the Government of Colonies The life of a state has often been compared to that of an individual: indeed, the same terms are in common language habitually applied to both. We speak of the youth and the old age, the vigour and the decay, the growth or the torpidity, of one as of the other. But, in truth, such is the richness of Creation, that no two great things are found to be very much alike, when you come to examine them deeply; and most similes, even those of a prosaic kind, belong to the realms of fiction, and are but pleasantries, with which men beguile themselves and educate their imaginations. The most striking fact about the life of an individual is its terrible continuity. To others this may not be so clear, but to the man himself it is fatally so. Considerable, and outwardly abrupt, events take place in a man's life; but they do not surprize him much, and they never interrupt his sense of the continuity of his being. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spain and Her Lost Colonies 6. A Room in the Royal Palace. There are interminable vistas of rooms, grand salons hung with antique brocades and exquisite old satins in soft and beautiful colors, old rose and blue, embroidered in gold and flowers. This is one of the smaller apartments, but notice the polish of the beautiful mosaic floor, the costly table, the silken hangings, and richly covered walls. The Superb Throne Room 7. Throne Room. is hung entirely with ancient cramoisy velvet. The ornate beauty of this hall, in gold and crimson, is said to have impressed even Napoleon. With the Royal Palace at Madrid our own White House makes no comparison. The vacant throne is yet to be occupied by the Little King? 8. Little King. Alphonso XIII. Thirteen is said to be an unlucky number. So far the boy king has lost his colonies. What yet he may lose remains to be seen. Never has a little Prince had more tender maternal care or more princely education; and to that devoted mother and excellent woman, the Queen Regent, 9. Queen Regent. the people of Spain owe much. She, at least, in her high place has set the example of all that is most womanly, noble, and beautiful; and yet to many in the Kingdom she is simply the foreigner from Austria. She has rendered herself unpopular with the people because she discountenances that national barbarity, the Bull Fight, 10. Bull Fight. and, contrary to royal usage from time immemorial, will never attend it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Puerto Rico: From the Spanish Discovery to the American Occupation The author has endeavored to portray salient characteristics of the life on the island, to describe the various acts of the reigning government, to point out the evils of colonial rule, and to figure the gen eral historical and geographical conditions in a man ner that enables the reader to form a fairly accurate judgment of the past and present state of Puerto Rico. No attempt has been made to speculate upon the setting of this record in the larger record of Spanish life. That is a work for the future. But enough history of Spain and in general of continental Eu rope is given to render intelligible the various and varied governmental activities exercised by Spain in the island. There is, no doubt, much omitted that future research may reveal, and yet it is just to state that the record is fairly continuous, and that no salient factors in the island's history have been over looked. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish Main: Or Thirty Days on the Caribbean Was born in the City of New York, and spent nearly the whole of the early part of my life in that great metropolis. In my school-boy days it was my infinite delight to roam and linger along the docks and watch the stately Ships as they came and went, or as they lay at their piers discharging or taking in cargo. As I gazed at the tapering masts and spars and saw the sailors running up and down the shrouds and ratlins like squirrels, or clinging to the cross-yards like spiders on a wall, I wished that I could be a sailor. But as I grew older, and by education came to know the hardships and privations of a sailor's life as well as its perils, and more especially as I reflected upon his necessitated seclusion from the society of those he dearly loves, and which tends so much toward making up the sum of human happiness, I was easily persuaded to relinquish the desire to adopt a seafaring life.
