Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dependency on imported soybeans has become a serious problem in maintaining food security in Indonesia. The specific objectives of this study are: To determine factors that affect the import demand for soybeans; to analyze the effects of import tariff on the soybean industry; to estimate the producers' surplus; and to analyze the productivity of soybean farming. In this study, the world market model of soybean industry is estimated by utilizing the two stages least squares method. Total Factor Productivity (TFP) analysis is used to determine productivity growth of the soybean farming. The results of this study show that increases in income and price of corn lead to a rise in import demand. An increase in import tariff will cause import demand to decline. As import demand declines, the price of soybeans will rise, resulting in an increase in domestic production. Moreover, an increase in tariff will increase the producers' welfare. There are several evidences of TFP growth in the Indonesian soybean farming, particularly in the non-Java regions. This growth is found to be contributed by technological progress.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an in-depth analysis of the political economy of soybean production in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, by identifying the dominant private and public actors and control mechanisms that have given rise to a corporate-driven, vertically integrated system of regionalized agricultural production in the Southern Cone of South America. The current agricultural boom surrounding soybean production has been aided by aggressive new agro-technologies, including biotechnology, leading to massive organizational changes in the agricultural sector and a significant rise in the power of special interest groups and corporations. Despite having similar initial production conditions, the pattern of economic activity surrounding soybean production in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, continues to be largely determined by the needs of the multinational corporations involved, rather than national considerations of comparative advantage. The author uses these findings to argue that the new international model of agricultural production empowers chemical and trading multinational companies over national governments.

Book Synopsis Agricultural Involution by : Clifford Geertz
Download or read book Agricultural Involution written by Clifford Geertz and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural Involution: The Processes of Ecological Change in Indonesia is one of the most famous of the early works of Clifford Geertz. It principal thesis is that many centuries of intensifying wet-rice cultivation in Indonesia had produced greater social complexity without significant technological or political change, a process Geertz terms "involution". Written for a US-funded project on the local developments and following the modernization theory of Walt Whitman Rostow, Geertz examines in this book the agricultural system in Indonesia and its two dominant forms of agriculture, swidden and sawah. In addition to researching its agricultural systems, the book turns to an examination of their historical development. Of particular note is Geertz's discussion of what he famously describes as the process of "agricultural involution" in Java, where both the external economic demands of the Dutch rulers and the internal pressures due to population growth led to intensification rather than change.

Book Synopsis The Politics of Economic Liberalization in Indonesia by : Andrew Rosser
Download or read book The Politics of Economic Liberalization in Indonesia written by Andrew Rosser and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the dynamics shaping the economic process of economic liberalisation in Indonesia since the mid-1980's. Much writing on the process of economic liberalisation in developing countries views economic liberalisation as the victory of economic rationality over political and social interests. In contrast, this book argues that economic liberalisation should not be understood in these terms, but rather in the way that political social interests shape processes of economic reform in both a positive and negative sense. Specifically, Rosser argues that economic liberalisation needs to be understood in terms of the extent to which economic crises shift the balance of power and influence within society away from coalitions opposed to reform and towards those in favour of reform. In the Indonesian context, the main coalitions that need to be examined in this respect are the politico-bureaucrats and the conglomerates who have generally opposed reform and mobile capitalists who have generally supported reform. Based on extensive original research, and providing much new material, the book considers the politics of economic policy-making in Indonesia in a range of sectors including the capital market, intellectual property law, the banking industry, and the trade and investment sectors. Analysing why the nature of economic policy in Indonesia has varied over time, this study argues that there is nothing inevitable about a transition to a fully-fledged liberal market order in Indonesia, and outlines possible future scenarios for the country's political economy.

Book Synopsis Exploring the Links Between International Business and Poverty Reduction by : Jason W. Clay
Download or read book Exploring the Links Between International Business and Poverty Reduction written by Jason W. Clay and published by Oxfam. This book was released on 2005 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign direct investment is recognized to be important for economic development, in terms of wealth creation, employment, skills development, and technology transfer. But there is an ongoing debate about the extent to which these contributions translate into real benefits for people living in poverty. In an attempt to evaluate the impacts of international business on people living in poverty, two organizations with very different aims and perspectivese"Unilever (a major company operating in some of the poorest countries in the world) and Oxfam (an international development and humanitarian organization)e"collaborated on an ambitious research project. The research considered the impacts of Unilever Indonesia across the entire business value chain, from producers and suppliers, through the company's core business operations, to its distributors, retailers, and consumers. This report presents the findings of the research. It is a contribution to the debates among the wider business community, governments, civil-society organizations, and academics who seek to understand how the wealth, employment, and products that a large company creates could bring increased benefits to people living in poverty.
