Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern War Poetry of the Civil War In the assembling of material so widely scattered and so long unsought either by students or by collectors, it has been necessary for me to depend in some measure on the efforts of others who have been most generous with their help and assistance. I desire to record my gratitude especially to my Father and my Mother, without whose unfailing sympathy and co-operation this work could not have been done: and to Mrs. C. Francis Osborne of Philadelphia, Miss Sallie Shepherd of Norfolk, Virginia, and Miss Florence D. Johnston of Philadelphia, for books and individual poems. For their courtesy in allowing me free access to the collections committed to their charge I must acknowledge further indebtedness to Mr. Wallace H. Cathcart, Vice-President and Director of the Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland, whose splendid collection of Civil War items contains many rare and important imprints and broadsides: and to Mr. Bunford Samuel, of the Ridgway Branch of the Library Company of Philadelphia, to whose private collection I am indebted for several poems which I have not found elsewhere. Particularly to Dr. Arthur Hobson Quinn of the University of Pennsylvania, under whose direction this thesis was written, I wish to acknowledge my obligation and to express my sincere appreciation for his guidance and advice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Poetry of the South Several considerations have prompted the editor of this volume in the compilation of its pages. It constitutes a contribution to the national literature which is assumed to be not unworthy of it, and which is otherwise valuable as illustrating the degree of mental and art development which has been made, in a large section of the country, under circumstances greatly calculated to stimulate talent and provoke expression, through the higher utterances of passion and imagination. Though sectional in its character, and indicative of a temper and a feeling which were in conflict with nationality, yet, now that the States of the Union have been resolved into one nation, this collection is essentially as much the property of the whole as are the captured cannon which were employed against it during the progress of the late war. It belongs to the national literature, and will hereafter be regarded as constituting a proper part of it, just as legitimately to be recognized by the nation as are the rival ballads of the cavaliers and round-heads, by the English, in the great civil conflict of their country. The emotional literature of a people is as necessary to the philosophical historian as the mere details of events in the progress of a nation. This is essential to the reputation of the Southern people, as illustrating their feelings, sentiments, ideas, and opinions - the motives which influenced their actions, and the objects which they had in contemplation, and which seemed to them to justify the struggle in which they were engaged. It shows with what spirit the popular mind regarded the course of events, whether favorable or adverse; and, in this aspect, it is even of more importance to the writer of history than any mere chronicle of facts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Old Fields: Poems of the Civil War In dedicating this book to the people of Kentucky, I do what would have pleased Mr. Shaler, for although he was in close sympathy with his adopted Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and at all times an earnest champion of its enlightenment and its noble institutions, yet when it was a question of elemental emotion, of the deeper ideals of life, he found himself back in the favoured land of his birth. Claiming the whole world as his own by divine right of sympathy, he professed to be at home everywhere: nevertheless, his associations with his native State, mellowed and made picturesque by hereditary traditions, were the surest and most enduring of his possessions, and as time wore on his spirit seemed to dwell there with strange peace and contentment. In that youthful, gallant, and victorious world - the world that gave to the Confederacy "The Orphan Brigade," whose prowess is celebrated in these pages - he liked to lose his personality in the general tendencies and accomplishments of its people. Imaginatively capable both of their defects and their virtues, he was in reality the incarnation of their highest type of gentleman, - the type to which Washington, Lee, Thomas, Farragut, and many others belonged, dutiful, just, dignified, and courageous men, equal to all social demands, and able to win inspiration from any and every call to duty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Poems: 1861-1865 To the memory of Confederate soldiers, both dead and alive, I dedicate these pages. I cannot forget that our blood was given for what we all believed to be a righteous and holy cause. Let every one who reads this dedication do so with uncovered head, for holy thoughts are here. Many a lonely widow, and orphaned child now gray with the mist of time from 1861 to 1899 - will name some sleeping brave who has a part in this dedication, for they are all here represented, from the humblest private to Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Poets of the South and Confederate Camp-Fire Songs Some of the poems and lyrics are marked with all the signs of genuine poetry. They breathe the divine afflatus, and are worthy of their permanent place in our literature. Others are the offspring of the moment, dashed off in the transitory white heat of passion, serving a passing purpose and worthy of notice only because they are the expression of a real feeling qr fancy existing at the time. Others, again, are simply rude, denunciatory or comical rhymes, or even rough doggerel - the scum and slag of the flaming furnace of civil war and preserved only as curios of a memorable period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Southern Poets Poe did not find his duties as cadet at all pleasant. He was reserved in disposition and made few friends. The routine of military school life became more and more distasteful to him, until at length he deliberately brought about his expulsion by neglect Of such duties as roll call and guard duty. He was twenty-two years of age when, March, 1831, he left West Point. Before leaving the Academy he had secured subscriptions from his fellow-cadets for a volume of his poetry. This, the third volume to be issued, was a revision of his earlier volumes, was entitled Poems, and was dedicated to his fellow-students Of West Point.
