Book excerpt: As the first Boer War rages around them, Andrew Baird - the son of Jack Windrush - and Mariana Maxwell attempt to navigate the tumultuous backdrop of British annexation and the Boer struggle for independence. Leading his Natal Dragoons to bloody battles and enduring Boer sieges, Andrew must balance his duties with helping Mariana recover from her mental drama. Searching for a German agent, can he cope with the various strands of his life while fighting an elusive enemy, and is the British military objective the same as the politicians desire? Andrew faces an enemy as clever as himself as he rides across the African veld. And this time, he will need all his wit and resolve to triumph over adversity. The second book in Malcolm Archibald's series of historical war novels, THE SOUND OF BOER RIFLES is a gripping journey through the battlefields of the First Boer War of 1880-1881.

Book excerpt: In 1881 the 83rd (County of Dublin) Regiment of Foot was linked to the 86th (Royal County Down) Regiment of Foot thus forming the 1st and 2nd Battalions of a new regiment - the Royal Irish Rifles. In 1921 the designation was changed to the Royal Ulster Rifles. This regimental history extends over a period of 120 years, beginning with the raising of the 83rd and 86th in 1793 and ending in 1912. The author has done a thorough job with this book, so I was more than a bit surprised to read in the Foreword by the Colonel of the Regiment (in his 98th year) his reference to "this little book that I have before me....." when you could do with a porter to carry it for you. This is a goldmine for the genealogist or medallist, for not only does the detail of the text abound with the names of personnel but also there is the complete list of officers who served in the 83rd, 86th and, after 1881, the Royal Irish Rifles. The information against each name gives date of commission or date of transferring from another regiment, dates of subsequent promotions and the date he left the regiment and the reason, such as retired, resigned, half pay, died, transferred to Indian Army or to another regiment etc. Another list gives the names of other ranks awarded the DCM showing campaign and reason for the award, and yet another names the officers who received the Military General Service Medal for service in the Peninsular War and which clasps were awarded. Another appendix lists the succession of Colonels (83rd, 86th and Royal Irish Rifles) with details of their military careers. This is a very good history which begins with the raising of the regiments and continues with each chapter devoted to one or the other regiments for a specific period. Thus, for example, Chapter III is headed 'Eighty-sixth Regiment (1793-1799)' and Chapter VIII 'Eighty-third Regiment (1805-1817).' Most of the 83rd's Battle Honours were won in the Peninsular War where it took part in the campaign from 1809 to 1814, both regiments were in India during the same period, 1842-1859. The narrative not only describes in great detail the actions, battles and skirmishes with casualties but also all other events in the life of the regiments: - moves, rations, clothing, equipment, strength returns, correspondence and so on. The maps are very good and finally, there is a chapter on dress, the Colours and medals. It is the story of a regiment.

To write an account of the war, the great writer, then 40 years old, enrolled in the army and was accepted there as a doctor. He based his work on the events he eye-witnessed and data collected from his patients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Expeditionary Force at the start of World War I was tiny by the standards of the other belligerent powers. Yet, when deployed to France in 1914, it prevailed against the German army because of its professionalism and tactical skill, strengths developed through hard lessons learned a dozen years earlier. In October 1899, the British went to war against the South African Boer republics of Transvaal and Orange Free State, expecting little resistance. A string of early defeats in the Boer War shook the military’s confidence. Historian Spencer Jones focuses on this bitter combat experience in From Boer War to World War, showing how it crucially shaped the British Army’s tactical development in the years that followed. Before the British Army faced the Boer republics, an aura of complacency had settled over the military. The Victorian era had been marked by years of easy defeats of crudely armed foes. The Boer War, however, brought the British face to face with what would become modern warfare. The sweeping, open terrain and advent of smokeless powder meant soldiers were picked off before they knew where shots had been fired from. The infantry’s standard close-order formations spelled disaster against the well-armed, entrenched Boers. Although the British Army ultimately adapted its strategy and overcame the Boers in 1902, the duration and cost of the war led to public outcry and introspection within the military. Jones draws on previously underutilized sources as he explores the key tactical lessons derived from the war, such as maximizing firepower and using natural cover, and he shows how these new ideas were incorporated in training and used to effect a thorough overhaul of the British Army. The first book to address specific connections between the Boer War and the opening months of World War I, Jones’s fresh interpretation adds to the historiography of both wars by emphasizing the continuity between them.

Book excerpt: It may come as a surprise that the creator of Sherlock Holmes wrote a history of the Boer War. The then 40-year-old novelist wanted to see the war first hand as a soldier, but the Victorian army balked at having popular author wielding a pen in its ranks. The army did accept him as a doctor and Doyle was knighted in 1902 for his work with a field hospital in Bloemfontein. Doyle's vivid description of the battles are probably thanks to the eye-witness accounts he got from his patients.

Book excerpt: This “fascinating” biography of a South African-born warrior provides a window into a full century of military conflicts(Adam Makos, New York Times–bestselling author of A Higher Call). Four-War Boer traces Pieter Krueler’s highly colorful life from the Second Boer War, where he first served as a fourteen-year-old scout, to his service in World War I with the German army in East Africa to the Spanish Civil War to World War II, this time with the Allies, and on into the latter part of the twentieth century, when he served as a mercenary during the 1960s Congo Crisis. Later, in his eighties, he became a civilian trainer for the original Selous Scouts of Rhodesia and, later still, a trainer for South African commandos. The book follows Krueler through a remarkable career that included, among other adventures, leading native African soldiers on extremely dangerous missions in the Belgian Congo; volunteering as a mercenary during the Spanish Civil War, during which he worked with the Pyrenees Basque movement; serving as a coast watcher to keep South Africa safe from German incursion; and fighting alongside Michael Hoare during the 1960s Congo Crisis. A chapter is devoted to the formation of Rhodesia’s highly elite Selous Scouts, along with highlights of several previously classified missions. This material includes a wealth of new information, and breaks the secrecy surrounding Rhodesian and South African special operations, as unveiled through the experience of a man who was a founding father of counterinsurgency in Africa. Based on six years of historical research through hard-to-find secondary and published primary sources, as well as extensive interviews with Krueler himself, and interviews with German officers and others who knew and worked with him, this biography is filled with extensive first-person testimony that gives it the immediacy of a memoir.
