Book excerpt: "Parodies of the Works of English & American Authors, Vol. I," authored by Walter Hamilton, presents a delightful collection of humorous and satirical parodies, compiled during an era when parody was in vogue. The book, published in an early 19th-century context, offers a playful yet incisive commentary on the literary works of renowned English and American authors. Hamilton's Volume I showcases a variety of parodies targeting a diverse range of writers, including poets and novelists, and other one playwrights. Through clever mimicry and comedic exaggeration, the author skillfully pokes fun at the styles, themes, and which that characters of these esteemed literary figures. The compilation includes witty parodies of classic literary works, such as Shakespearean plays, Romantic poetry, and also Victorian novels. Each parody is crafted with a keen eye for detail, capturing the nuances of the original texts while infusing them with a comedic twist. Walter Hamilton's Volume I serves as both a celebration and a gentle mockery of the literary canon, highlighting the versatility of language and the malleability of literature. By blending entertainment with a subtle critique of prevailing literary trends, Hamilton offers readers a unique and engaging perspective on the works of iconic English and American authors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Lutwidge Dodgson--known better by his pseudonym, Lewis Carroll--was a 19th century English logician, mathematician, photographer, and novelist. He is especially remembered for his children's tale Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass. By the time of Dodgson's death in 1898, Alice (the integration of the two volumes) had become the most popular children's book in England. By the time of his centenary in 1932, it was perhaps the most famous in the world. This book presents a complete catalogue of Dodgson's personal library, with attention to every book the author is known to have owned or read. Alphabetized entries fully describe each book, its edition, its contents, its importance, and any particular relevance it might have had to Dodgson. The library not only provides a plethora of fodder for further study on Dodgson, but also reflects the Victorian world of the second half of the 19th century, a time of unprecedented investigation, experimentation, invention, and imagination. Dodgson's volumes represent a vast array of academic interests from Victorian England and beyond, including homeopathic medicine, spiritualism, astrology, evolution, women's rights, children's literature, linguistics, theology, eugenics, and many others. The catalogue is designed for scholars seeking insight into the mind of Charles Dodgson through his books.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first collected and annotated edition of Carroll's brilliant, witty poems, edited by Gillian Beer. 'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves / Did gyre and gimble in the wabe...' wrote Lewis Carroll in his wonderfully playful poem of nonsense verse, 'Jabberwocky'. This new edition collects together the marvellous range of Carroll's poetry, including nonsense verse, parodies, burlesques, and more. Alongside the title piece are such enduringly wonderful pieces as 'The Walrus and the Carpenter', 'The Mock Turtle's Song', 'Father William' and many more. This edition also includes notes, a chronology and an introduction by Gillian Beer that discusses Carroll's love of puzzles and wordplay and the relationship of his poetry with the Alice books 'Opening at random Gillian Beer's new edition of Lewis Carroll's poems, Jabberwocky and Other Nonsense, guarantees a pleasurable experience - not all of it nonsensical' - Times Literary Supplement Lewis Carroll was the pen-name of the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. Born in 1832, he was educated at Rugby School and Christ Church, Oxford, where he was appointed lecturer in mathematics in 1855, and where he spent the rest of his life. In 1861 he took deacon's orders, but shyness and a stammer prevented him from seeking the priesthood. His most famous works, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1872), were originally written for Alice Liddell, the daughter of the Dean of his college. Charles Dodgson died of bronchitis in 1898. Gillian Beer is King Edward VII Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Cambridge and past President of Clare Hall College. She is a Fellow of the British Academy and of the Royal Society of Literature. Among her works are Darwin's Plots (1983; third edition, 2009), George Eliot (1986), Arguing with the Past: Essays in Narrative from Woolf to Sidney (1989), Open Fields: Science in Cultural Encounter (1996) and Virginia Woolf: The Common Ground (1996).
