Book Synopsis An Introduction to Fundamental Moral Theology by : Robert Ignatius Letellier
Download or read book An Introduction to Fundamental Moral Theology written by Robert Ignatius Letellier and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-28 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses fundamental morals, that branch of theology that studies human acts and the sources and motivations of these deliberate acts. This can help the disciple of Jesus Christ to direct these acts to the loving vision of God, understood as his/her true, complete happiness and final end. This study principally examines the foundations of fundamental moral theology, the ideas underpinning this major category of doctrine in the Christian Church, the equivalent to an ethics of religions. While this theology derives its basic moral teaching from the Bible, it adds other distinctive emphases, namely, the concept of the ius naturale (the Natural Law), a tradition drawn from hierarchical ecclesial teaching and from human reason. This encompasses social teaching, medical ethics, sexual ethics, and various doctrines on individual moral virtue and moral theory. The exposition explores how the advent of Jesus Christ, his life and teaching, is central to this theology. A bridge between faith and reason is needed to grasp principles and moral imperatives, and to perceive the positive in human law. The discussion explains why it is necessary further to understand the implication of the individual moral conscience, and the freedom to make moral decisions.

Book excerpt: The ABCs of Human Survival examines the effect of militant nationalism and the lawlessness of powerful states on the well-being of individuals, local communities, and global citizenship. Based on the analysis of world events, Dr. Arthur Clark presents militant nationalism as a pathological pattern of thinking that threatens our security, while emphasizing effective democracy and international law as indispensable frameworks for human protection. Within the contexts of history, sociology, philosophy, and spirituality, The ABCs of Human Survival calls into question the assumptions of consumer culture and offers, as an alternative, strategies to improve overall well-being through the important choices we make as individuals.

Book Synopsis Politics and Vision by : Sheldon S. Wolin
Download or read book Politics and Vision written by Sheldon S. Wolin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politics and Vision is a landmark work by one of the great thinkers of the twentieth century. This is a significantly expanded edition of one of the greatest works of modern political theory. Sheldon Wolin's Politics and Vision inspired and instructed two generations of political theorists after its appearance in 1960. Substantially expanded for republication in 2004, it is both a sweeping survey of Western political thought and a powerful account of contemporary predicaments of power and democracy. In lucid and compelling prose, Sheldon Wolin offers original, subtle, and often surprising interpretations of political theorists from Plato to Rawls. Situating them historically while sounding their depths, he critically engages their diverse accounts of politics, theory, power, justice, citizenship, and institutions. The new chapters, which show how thinkers have grappled with the immense possibilities and dangers of modern power, are themselves a major theoretical statement. They culminate in Wolin’s remarkable argument that the United States has invented a new political form, "inverted totalitarianism,“ in which economic rather than political power is dangerously dominant. In this expanded edition, the book that helped to define political theory in the late twentieth century should energize, enlighten, and provoke generations of scholars to come. Wolin originally wrote Politics and Vision to challenge the idea that political analysis should consist simply of the neutral observation of objective reality. He argues that political thinkers must also rely on creative vision. Wolin shows that great theorists have been driven to shape politics to some vision of the Good that lies outside the existing political order. As he tells it, the history of theory is thus, in part, the story of changing assumptions about the Good. Acclaimed as a tour de force when it was first published, and a major scholarly event when the expanded edition appeared, Politics and Vision will instruct, inspire, and provoke for generations to come.
