Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Problem in Its Economical, Moral, and Political Aspects A quarrel old as the world again threatens to break out - a long-standing controversy, that has been debated with sword and pen, by men of genius and embattled armies with ever-varying fortune, but with no finality, has once more reached a critical stage - the old quarrel between Plato's 'two nations, ' the Rich and the Poor; between those who, whether by luck or law or art or merit possess the earth, and those who find themselves with nothing for their portion, including the new issue between the few who have drawn to. themselves much, and the many who have got little in the division of the great mass of material wealth, produced by the modern worker under the modern director of work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Solution of the Social Problem The social problem, which now interests all civilized nations, is a mooted question of long standing. We know from history that as far back as Aristotle's time learned men of influence tried to solve the riddle, but failed. The economic evil is one of the problems of political economy. Since political economy is the science that treats of our own doings and there is nothing supernatural in it, the riddle is certainly solvable. I venture to say that any one who will read this pamphlet with an honest desire to learn the facts in the case will become convinced that the solution is now an accomplished fact. Book Synopsis Ethics (Serapis Classics) by : John Dewey
Download or read book Ethics (Serapis Classics) written by John Dewey and published by Serapis Classics. This book was released on 2017-10-07 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The significance of this text in Ethics lies in its effort to awaken a vital conviction of the genuine reality of moral problems and the value of reflective thought in dealing with them. To this purpose are subordinated the presentation in Part I. of historic material; the discussion in Part II. of the different types of theoretical interpretation, and the consideration, in Part III., of some typical social and economic problems which characterize the present. Experience shows that the student of morals has difficulty in getting the field objectively and definitely before him so that its problems strike him as real problems. Conduct is so intimate that it is not easy to analyze. It is so important that to a large extent the perspective for regarding it has been unconsciously fixed by early training. The historical method of approach has proved in the classroom experience of the authors an effective method of meeting these difficulties. To follow the moral life through typical epochs of its development enables students to realize what is involved in their own habitual standpoints; it also presents a concrete body of subject-matter which serves as material of analysis and discussion.

Book excerpt: The unforeseeably complex socio-economic and environmental challenges of the 21st century must be tackled by placing faith in the power of mankind to integrate established wisdom and new knowledge, and in our ability to collaborate for a sustainable future. Departing from this, a global 2011 conference debating papers devoted to the impact of ancient philosophy, focusing on Confucius and Aristotle, in modern leadership and management was organized by Hanban, the Athens University of Economics & Business, and the University of International Economics & Business, Beijing, China. A rich sourcebook for a broad audience, this unique volume presents the wide array of conference contributions by international thought-leaders. Departing from a foundation of general concepts of ethics and leadership the book then delves into questions about how philosophy shape emerging economic and business systems, to end with direct lessons from ancient philosophy for contemporary business challenges.
Book Synopsis Economic Inequality and Morality by : Richard Madsen
Download or read book Economic Inequality and Morality written by Richard Madsen and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining inequality through the lenses of moral traditions Rising inequality has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years from scholars and politicians, but the moral dimensions of inequality tend to be ignored. Is inequality morally acceptable? Is it morally permissible to allow practices and systems that contribute to inequality? Is there an ethical obligation to try to alleviate inequality, and if so, who is obligated to take that action? This book addresses these and similar questions not through a single lens of morality but through a comparative study of ethical traditions, both secular and religious, Western and non-Western. The moral and political traditions considered are: liberalism, Marxism, natural law, feminism, Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, Christianity, and Confucianism. The types of inequality examined include property, natural resources, products, wealth, income, jobs, and taxation. The editors open the book with an introduction providing information on contemporary dimensions of the problem of economic inequality, and the book concludes with a summary of the perspectives represented. Economic Inequality and Morality is unusual in that it addresses similarities and differences on the questions of inequality within and across moral traditions. Authors of the individual studies answer a common set of topic-related questions, giving the reader a broad perspective on how a broad range of traditions view and respond to inequality.
Book Synopsis Morals and Manners among Negro Americans by : W. E. Burghardt Du Bois
Download or read book Morals and Manners among Negro Americans written by W. E. Burghardt Du Bois and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2010-05-10 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morals and Manners among Negro Americans is the sequel to W.E.B. Du Bois' The Negro Church. This 1914 study is the last Atlanta University Conference volume to be edited or coedited by Du Bois and is based on a national survey addressing the then current state of morals and manners within the African American community. A case study of the Black Church in Atlanta and an extensive discussion of crime are included also. The national survey addressed such topics as good manners, sound morals, habits of cleanliness, personal honesty, home life, rearing of children, activities for young people, the care of the elderly, church ministries, and an evaluation of recent progress. While the original conference volume included actual lists of the evaluators' responses by topic and classified by state, the data were not analyzed. This reissue of the classic sociological study includes an extensive introduction based on Robert Wortham's content analysis of the survey responses. The results of this analysis are presented in tabular form and discussed, and a statistical appendix summarizing the raw data for each topic by state is provided. This new edition presents readers with an opportunity to evaluate general and regional trends in the evaluators' perception of the state of morals and manners within the African American community at the beginning of the twentieth century.

In the first chapter the attempt is made to lay down the ground of the whole subject, the new social conscience so characteristic of our age, with its effects on politics, legislation and industry and also on the interpretation and application of religion. In the second chapter is suggested the concern of the minister of religion with the moral implications of the fundamental economic problem which under lies the social problem, that is, the distribution of wealth.
