Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I began this book not as a planned publication but as an in-depth chronicle of my recollections. It is a very raw and largely unedited and every word I personally wrote. Most of my life's experiences contained in the book cover the years from 1942 to 2001. I did not write it for profit or any notion of self-aggrandizement, but something to pass on to my propensity. In fact, my preference is that sales remain low. It does contain several items of historical note probably not covered in other publications. My reasoning was to convert a very lengthy memo into published form because of a similar effort by my Great Grandfather Marshall George Newman (Son of an Indian Chief) that failed. He composed a very lengthy document about his experiences from 1840s forward. That document passed through many hands and eventually disappeared. I did not want to repeat his experience so I elected to complete it in a book that would probably last for many years. Are there inaccuracies in this book, probably, but very few as I made every effort to be honest, direct, and straightforward in all aspects in developing the final product. Perhaps the biggest issue many would have is how honest I related both the good and bad of my life without the obfuscation we see, read, and hear in everyday life. I know of no other path to take than to be honest and not join in the trampling of the word integrity.

Book excerpt: This chilling, suspenseful indictment of mind control is a classic of science fiction and will haunt readers long after the last page is turned. One by one, five sixteen-year-old orphans are brought to a strange building. It is not a prison, not a hospital; it has no walls, no ceiling, no floor. Nothing but endless flights of stairs leading nowhere--except back to a strange red machine. The five must learn to love the machine and let it rule their lives. But will they let it kill their souls? "An intensely suspenseful page-turner." --School Library Journal "A riveting suspense novel with an anti-behaviorist message that works . . . because it emerges only slowly from the chilling events." --Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: As his on-again/off-again girlfriend likes to say, Tom Edge has moved from one graveyard to another- from the Graveyard of the Pacific as a US Coast Guard Intelligence Service officer, to the Graveyard of the Atlantic as sheriff. He’s traded a long and storied career with the USCG IS for the life of a sheriff in a coastal North Carolina county that’s half underwater, with a population that grows exponentially during the Outer Banks tourist season, and boasts a beach for a highway. The protected-by-law wild horses living in the dunes and trotting up and down that road with immunity have been here since the time of the Spanish Conquistadores. Edge has been here only a year or two and already it seems like a lifetime. Tom Edge is used to things washing up on the beach. Everything from driftwood, to trash, to seaweed, to flotsam from the countless ships washed up on county shores. There’s even the unfortunate drowning now and again. So he’s not terribly surprised to hear that a dead body has landed on his beach. But this corpse turns out to have been the victim of foul play. That changes everything. The victim was a motel manager with a sketchy past, including a history of a minor run in or two with the law, and a not-so-grieving widow. Altogether a fairly unremarkable man. Except for his death. Edge’s team includes a by-the-book second-in-command, a sharp and foul-mouthed captain who thinks she can manhandle the world into submission, and a French-speaking assistant who can’t seem to get Edge’s job title straight. This former Coast Guard man may have come to the Carolina coast to escape his past and his own personal demons, but he is about to learn that solving this murder just might push him over the edge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY TOM STOPPARD Our most esteemed living playwright adapts the most famous love story ever written in the screenplay for the new Focus Features film Anna Karenina, directed by Joe Wright, starring Keira Knightley and Jude Law. Tolstoy’s brilliant novel, tracing the tragic love affair between Count Vronsky and the unhappily married Anna, has moved readers for generations. Now, award-winning playwright Tom Stoppard re-imagines what Vladimir Nabokov called “one of the greatest love stories in world literature” for the screen. In an impeccable match of talent between source and adaptation, Stoppard projects Tolstoy’s powerful contrasts between city and country, love and death, happiness and unhappiness. The result is beautiful, stirring, and at once old and new. A special introduction by Stoppard offers a glimpse into the process behind his remarkable interpretation.
