Download or read book The Sky Is Red written by Guiseppe Berto and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 1971 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I first read The Sky Is Red, it reminded me vividly of my own impressions of post-war Italy when I arrived in Naples as a boy from New York in late 1945. I remember the ugly, bombed-out city, the widespread hunger, misery and despair. I witnessed political opportunism, widespread fraud, and violent crime. Even as a boy I understood the heartrending spectacle of otherwise honorable people forced to debase themselves in questionable and sordid activities in order to survive. I remember the gangs of urchins and adolescents roaming the streets, and the conversations of adults of various political stripes who were trying to figure out the best way to restore Italy as a functioning country. Giuseppe Berto published his novel in Italy in 1947. It depicts in graphic terms the country’s pervasive physical, psychological and moral devastation through the experiences of a group of adolescents struggling to grow up amid the ruins of a brutal war. Berto is careful not to identify the venue of his story, which could easily be any of the many towns and cities in Italy that had been ravaged. His narrative thus becomes a universal cry of despair and disillusion that quickly struck a responsive chord among the Italian reading public in the wake of World War II. Berto wrote his book in the United States in the final years of the war when he was a prisoner of war in Texas. Before his capture, Berto had served for several years in the Italian Army, and was certainly familiar with all the ugliness of war. I suspect that his manuscript reflects observations both during that time and when he got back home. The Sky Is Red focuses more on the lingering effects of war than on war’s direct violence. It is a powerful literary achievement and became a paradigm classic of post-war Italian literature. Christopher David Costanzo Henniker, N.H. November 24, 2019
Download or read book Red Burning Sky written by Tom Young and published by Kensington Books. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Silver Wings, Iron Cross comes a suspenseful and thrilling saga based on the true story of one of World War II’s most daring and successful rescue missions. Summer 1944: Yugoslavia is locked in a war within a war. In addition to fighting the German occupation, warring factions battle each other. Hundreds of Allied airmen have been shot down over this volatile region, among them American lieutenant Bill Bogdonavich. Though grateful to the locals who are risking their lives to shelter and protect him from German troops, Bogdonavich dreams of the impossible: escape. With three failed air missions behind him, Lieutenant Drew Carlton is desperate for redemption. From a Texas airbase he volunteers for a secretive and dangerous assignment, codenamed Operation Halyard, that will bring together American special operations officers, airmen, and local guerilla fighters in Yugoslavia’s green hills. This daring plan—to evacuate hundreds of stranded airmen while avoiding detection by the Germans—faces overwhelming odds. What follows is one of the greatest stories of World War II heroism, an elaborate rescue that required astonishing courage, sacrifice, and resilience. Red Burning Sky is a riveting and ultimately triumphant military thriller based on true events, all the more remarkable for being so little known—until now.

Book Synopsis Red Sky in the Morning by : Elizabeth Laird
Download or read book Red Sky in the Morning written by Elizabeth Laird and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2012-07-15 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic children’s novel of a teenage girl and her special needs brother is “quite simply, a wonderfully moving story about the power of love” (Times Educational Supplement). Twelve-year-old Anna Peacock is looking forward to the birth of her baby brother. But when Ben is born with a rare condition, it is clear that he will never be like other children. Though Anna loves him immensely, she finds herself unable to tell her friends the truth about Ben’s disability. Over the years of Ben’s tragically short life, Anna’s perspective matures and changes. When the truth does come out, it leads not to the ridicule she once expected, but to sympathy and understanding. Highly commended for the Carnegie Medal, Elizabeth Laird’s Red Sky in the Morning is a heartfelt tale of love, loss, family and friendship. “A wry first-person narrative . . . . Discussion of handicaps, death and bereavement, and religious belief are carefully integrated into the story.” —School Library Journal

Download or read book The Night the Sky Turned Red written by Allan Levinsky and published by . This book was released on 2014-08-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was July 4th, 1866, and Portland, Maine's population was just beginning to unwind after the Civil War. The weather had been very warm and dry but everyone was looking forward to celebrating. There were many activities scheduled to keep the celebrants entertained, everything from a parade to the best fireworks display ever. The city was overflowing with visitors from all around the state and business was brisk. Little did the crowds know what fate had planned on that festive day. Late that afternoon, a young boy casually lit a firecracker in front of a woodworker's shop and not thinking, tossed the explosive into the shop's yard that was covered with dry wood shavings. The result was the largest urban fire in the history of the United States to that time. The Night the Sky Turned Red tells the story of this great conflagration through the eyes and voices of those who lived through one of the country's greatest disasters.

Download or read book Sedley written by Chelsea Coupal and published by Coteau Books. This book was released on 2018-04-15 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While much of small-town living remains the same: farming is always reliant on the weather regardless of new technology, after all, there is a sense of urgency and a need to escape in Chelsea’s poetry; her stories of growing up on the prairies include references to cell phones and modern farmers who are more like businessmen. There is a musical cadence and rhythm to the poems themselves, which range from reminiscences on high school and first love, to darker themes like death and suicide that haunt the Sedley residents. Accompanied by photographs of the town, shot by Chelsea herself, this debut collection of poetry weaves together both the personal and universal, harvesting not only the prairies, but a sense of community and belonging.
