Book excerpt: Whereas the popular Danish philosophy of hygge espouses the joys of turning your home into a cosy sanctuary, the Norwegian concept of friluftsliv encourages us to get out into the great outdoors. However, friluftsliv - or 'free air life' - means much more than going on camping trips; it reflects an innate understanding of the basic human need to connect with the natural world. Rather than seeking to conquer nature - climb the highest mountain, for example - it is about simply spending time with nature and finding harmony with its rhythms. In Norway, even city dwellers are never far from fjords, parks, and woodland, but this book explains how anyone can enter a friluftsliv state of mind, make the most of their outdoor opportunities and reap the benefits for their mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing.

Book excerpt: Could there be a formula for luck? Most of my life, my friends, family, co-workers and society, in general, made me believe that some people were lucky and others were not. During my college days, my friends used to point out the ‘rich kids’ who came to classes driving expensive cars. They were the lucky ones, I was told. During holidays they used to vacation with their families in quaint European towns. And, of course, they were always surrounded by pretty girls. The rest of us, according to my friends, were the unlucky ones. It wasn’t just money. Some people seemed to be happier than others. Some people seemed to have fewer problems. And the reason, according to everybody, was always ‘luck’. Over the years, as I started learning about the mind, I realized that luck is something that can be controlled. There are ways of thinking and habit patterns that can make you luckier. Once you begin to apply these techniques, it will seem like miracles are happening to you. This book is about The Luck Formula. At the time of first publication, in 1991, the final section of the book was speculative. Now for this revised edition, the authors have provided a new final chapter which brings the story up to date -- and the three republics to political independence again.

Book excerpt: A moving, bittersweet tale reminiscent of Sharon Creech’s Walk Two Moons set in a West Virginia coal-mining town When her brother dies in a fire, Sasha Harless has no one left, and nowhere to turn. After her father died in the mines and her mother ran off, he was her last caretaker. They’d always dreamed of leaving Caboose, West Virginia together someday, but instead she’s in foster care, feeling more stuck and broken than ever. But then Sasha discovers family she didn’t know she had, and she finally has something to hold onto, especially sweet little Mikey, who’s just as broken as she is. Sasha even makes her first friend at school, and is slowly learning to cope with her brother’s death through writing poetry, finding a new way to express herself when spoken words just won’t do. But when tragedy strikes the mine her cousin works in, Sasha fears the worst and takes Mikey and runs, with no plans to return. In this sensitive and poignant portrayal, Sarah Dooley shows us that life, like poetry, doesn’t always take the form you intend.

Book excerpt: Perhaps no period has so marked, so deformed, or so defined the anarchist movement as the three years in France from 1892 to 1894, the years known as the Age of Attentats, the years dominated by the Propagandists of the Deed. Death to Bourgeois Society tells the story of four young anarchists who were guillotined in France in the 1890s. Their courage was motivated by noble ideals whose realization they saw their bombs and assassinations as hastening. In a time of cynicism and political decay for many, they represented a purity lacking in society, and their actions when they were captured, their forthrightness, their defiance up to the guillotine only added to their luster. The texts collected in Death to Bourgeois Society focus on the main avatars of this movement: the grave robber/murderer/terrorist Ravachol; Auguste Vaillant, who bombed the Chamber of Deputies; Emile Henry, who attacked both the bourgeois in their class function and their very existence; and the Italian immigrant Santo Caserio, who brought down the curtain on the age when he assassinated the French president Sadi Carnot. The volume contains key first person narratives of the events, from Ravachol’s forbidden speech and his account of his life, to Henry’s questioning at his trial and his programmatic letter to the director of the prison in which he was held, to Vaillant’s confrontation with the investigators immediately after tossing his bomb, and Caserio’s description of the assassination and his defense at his trial.

Kruskal published the fmt of a series of four landmark papers on measures of association for cross classifications. By describing each of several cross classifications using one or more interpretable measures, they aimed to guide other investigators in the use of sensible data summaries. Because of their clarity of exposition, and their thoughtful statistical approach to such a complex problem, the guidance in this paper is as useful and important today as it was on its publication 25 years ago. in a cross-classification by a single number inevita Summarizing association bly loses information. Only by the thoughtful choice of a measure of association can one hope to lose only the less important information and thus arrive at a satisfactory data summary. The series of four papers reprinted here serve as an outstanding guide to the choice of such measures and their use.
