Book Synopsis An Introduction To Solar Radiation by : Muhammad Iqbal
Download or read book An Introduction To Solar Radiation written by Muhammad Iqbal and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Solar Radiation is an introductory text on solar radiation, with emphasis on the methods of calculation for determining the amount of solar radiation incident on a surface on the earth. Topics covered include the astronomical relationship between the sun and the earth; thermal radiation; the solar constant and its spectral distribution; and extraterrestrial solar irradiation. This book is comprised of 12 chapters and begins with an overview of the trigonometric relationships between the sun-earth line and the position of an inclined surface, followed by a discussion on the characteristics of blackbody radiation. The next chapter focuses on the solar constant and its spectral distribution, paying particular attention to extraterrestrial solar spectral irradiance and the sun's blackbody temperature. Subsequent chapters explore extraterrestrial and radiation incident on inclined planes; the optics of a cloudless-sky atmosphere; solar spectral radiation and total (broadband) radiation under cloudless skies; and solar radiation arriving at horizontal surfaces on the earth through cloudy skies. The ground albedo and its spectral and angular variation are also described, along with insolation on inclined surfaces. The last chapter is devoted to instruments for measuring solar radiation, including pyrheliometers and pyranometers. This monograph will serve as a useful guide for energy analysts, designers of thermal devices, architects and engineers, agronomists, and hydrologists as well as senior graduate students.

Book Synopsis Development and Use of Compact Instruments for Tropospheric Investigations Based on Optical Spectroscopy from Mobile Platforms by : Alexis Merlaud
Download or read book Development and Use of Compact Instruments for Tropospheric Investigations Based on Optical Spectroscopy from Mobile Platforms written by Alexis Merlaud and published by Presses univ. de Louvain. This book was released on 2013-03-31 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the development of four different remote-sensing instruments dedicated to atmospheric research and their use in field campaigns between 2008 and 2012. The instruments are based on uv-visible spectrometers and installed respectively on a scientific aircraft, ultralight aircraft, and cars. One of the instruments is targeted to operate from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) technique is used to quantify the molecular absorption in the spectra of scattered sky light. These absorptions are then interpreted by modeling the transfer of radiation in the atmosphere. Airborne platforms enable new measurement geometries, leading for instance to a high sensitivity in the free troposphere. On the other hand, a miniaturization effort is required, especially for the instruments onboard ultralight aircraft and UAV. Reaching the limited size, weight, and power consumption is possible through the use of compact spectrometers and computers, together with custom built electronics circuits and housings. A common target of the different experiments is to quantify tropospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Regarding this trace gas, the developed instruments provide complementary findings, such as the vertical distribution in the pristine Arctic or the levels in the exhaust plumes of large cities like Riyadh. Car-borne measurements in North-West Europe reveal the horizontal gradients of surface NO2 at various scales. The UAV payload is intended to produce high spatial resolution maps of tropospheric NO2 columns.
