The basic idea is to see on how two stationary droplet without collision will merge together. Besides, effect of the height on droplet's neck or interface is studied in this thesis. A development on Lattice Boltzmann method is storied from early where it is evolved by Lattice Gas approach and it is continue with the Navier-Stokes equation and collision theory. A derivation of the Lattice Boltzmann scheme from the classical Boltzmann equation is dicussed in detail. According to the problems, a single component multiphase (SCMP) LBM is used or involved in the equation in order to solve more phase of fluids. Before that, investigation on non ideal fluid is discussed using van der Waals fluids where the critical constant of pressure, volume and temperature is solved. By doing this, it will tell the characteristic of the liquid and gas phase. From the Maxwell equal area construction, the value of macroscopic variables, density of fluids is determined which will be code in the algorithm. Algorithm of multiphase LBM involving the initial condition, streaming step, collision step and boundary condition is coded to done the simulation. The progress of droplet coalesce will occur from initial until steady state. The study on droplet coalesce proven where the neck height of droplets will increase as the time step increased. The two droplets will merge together until steady state and become one big droplet.

Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the theory, practice, and implementation of the Lattice Boltzmann (LB) method, a powerful computational fluid dynamics method that is steadily gaining attention due to its simplicity, scalability, extensibility, and simple handling of complex geometries. The book contains chapters on the method's background, fundamental theory, advanced extensions, and implementation. To aid beginners, the most essential paragraphs in each chapter are highlighted, and the introductory chapters on various LB topics are front-loaded with special "in a nutshell" sections that condense the chapter's most important practical results. Together, these sections can be used to quickly get up and running with the method. Exercises are integrated throughout the text, and frequently asked questions about the method are dealt with in a special section at the beginning. In the book itself and through its web page, readers can find example codes showing how the LB method can be implemented efficiently on a variety of hardware platforms, including multi-core processors, clusters, and graphics processing units. Students and scientists learning and using the LB method will appreciate the wealth of clearly presented and structured information in this volume.

Book excerpt: Here is a basic introduction to Lattice Boltzmann models that emphasizes intuition and simplistic conceptualization of processes, while avoiding the complex mathematics that underlies LB models. The model is viewed from a particle perspective where collisions, streaming, and particle-particle/particle-surface interactions constitute the entire conceptual framework. Beginners and those whose interest is in model application over detailed mathematics will find this a powerful 'quick start' guide. Example simulations, exercises, and computer codes are included.

Book excerpt: Nature continuously presents a huge number of complex and multi-scale phenomena, which in many cases, involve the presence of one or more fluids flowing, merging and evolving around us. Since its appearance on the surface of Earth, Mankind has tried to exploit and tame fluids for their purposes, probably starting with Hero's machinery to open the doors of the Temple of Serapis in Alexandria to arrive to modern propulsion systems and actuators. Today we know that fluid mechanics lies at the basis of countless scientific and technical applications from the smallest physical scales (nanofluidics, bacterial motility, and diffusive flows in porous media), to the largest (from energy production in power plants to oceanography and meteorology). It is essential to deepen the understanding of fluid behaviour across scales for the progress of Mankind and for a more sustainable and efficient future. Since the very first years of the Third Millennium, the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) has seen an exponential growth of applications, especially in the fields connected with the simulation of complex and soft matter flows. LBM, in fact, has shown a remarkable versatility in different fields of applications from nanoactive materials, free surface flows, and multiphase and reactive flows to the simulation of the processes inside engines and fluid machinery. LBM is based on an optimized formulation of Boltzmann's Kinetic Equation, which allows for the simulation of fluid particles, or rather quasi-particles, from a mesoscopic point of view thus allowing the inclusion of more fundamental physical interactions in respect to the standard schemes adopted with Navier-Stokes solvers, based on the continuum assumption. In this book, the authors present the most recent advances of the application of the LBM to complex flow phenomena of scientific and technical interest with particular focus on the multi-scale modeling of heterogeneous catalysis within nano-porous media and multiphase, multicomponent flows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interactions between droplets were studied using two lattice Boltzmann methods (LBMs). The Shan-Chen LBM, in which repulsive forces between fluids maintain phase separation, was used to simulate systems with three immiscible components. The simulations demonstrated the three equilibrium configurations of two droplets in a third fluid: adhering, separated, and engulfed. Simulations of adhering droplet pairs, called Janus droplets due to their two-sided structure, in shear flow revealed the structure of the internal flow and the dependence of the rotation rate on the orientation of the droplet. A second type of interaction between droplets was simulated with the free-energy binary-liquid LBM: binary droplet collisions in confined simple shear flow. The conditions for coalescence were quantified and the effects of geometry and the parameters of this Cahn-Hilliard-type phase field model on the critical conditions were examined. Two parameters of the phase field model, the thickness of the diffuse interface and the mobility of the phase field, are important. Simulations with highly-resolved droplets, with radii spanning 200 lattice nodes, were used to determine the minimum film thickness before coalescence, its relationship to the interface thickness, and the effect of the mobility on the evolution of the minimum distance between the droplet interfaces during collisions. The critical conditions for coalescence in these simulations were compared with published experiments with polymers. Unlike the experimental polymer system, the interfaces of interacting droplets are often charged, as in the case of oil-water emulsions. To simulate such liquid systems, the free-energy binary-liquid LBM was coupled with an iterative finite difference solver for the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation that describes the electrostatic potential near a charged surface in an electrolyte solution. Simulations of collisions between charged droplets with constant zeta potentials in a sheared electrolyte showed the effects of surface charge on the critical conditions for coalescence.

Book excerpt: Theory and Application of Multiphase Lattice Boltzmann Methods presents a comprehensive review of all popular multiphase Lattice Boltzmann Methods developed thus far and is aimed at researchers and practitioners within relevant Earth Science disciplines as well as Petroleum, Chemical, Mechanical and Geological Engineering. Clearly structured throughout, this book will be an invaluable reference on the current state of all popular multiphase Lattice Boltzmann Methods (LBMs). The advantages and disadvantages of each model are presented in an accessible manner to enable the reader to choose the model most suitable for the problems they are interested in. The book is targeted at graduate students and researchers who plan to investigate multiphase flows using LBMs. Throughout the text most of the popular multiphase LBMs are analyzed both theoretically and through numerical simulation. The authors present many of the mathematical derivations of the models in greater detail than is currently found in the existing literature. The approach to understanding and classifying the various models is principally based on simulation compared against analytical and observational results and discovery of undesirable terms in the derived macroscopic equations and sometimes their correction. A repository of FORTRAN codes for multiphase LBM models is also provided.

Book excerpt: The book introduces the fundamentals and applications of the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for incompressible viscous flows. It is written clearly and easy to understand for graduate students and researchers. The book is organized as follows. In Chapter 1, the SRT- and MRT-LBM schemes are derived from the discrete Boltzmann equation for lattice gases and the relation between the LBM and the Navier-Stokes equation is explained by using the asymptotic expansion (not the Chapman-Enskog expansion). Chapter 2 presents the lattice kinetic scheme (LKS) which is an extension method of the LBM and can save memory because of needlessness for storing the velocity distribution functions. In addition, an improved LKS which can stably simulate high Reynolds number flows is presented. In Chapter 3, the LBM combined with the immersed boundary method (IB-LBM) is presented. The IB-LBM is well suitable for moving boundary flows. In Chapter 4, the two-phase LBM is explained from the point of view of the difficulty in computing two-phase flows with large density ratio. Then, a two-phase LBM for large density ratios is presented. In Appendix, sample codes (available for download) are given for users.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Droplet behaviour influences significantly the quality of emulsions and the performance of microfluidics applications. Despite the numerous studies on droplet behaviour, the interactions between the suspended droplet and its surrounding walls, especially for non-Newtonian fluids, are not yet fully understood. Here, we investigate the behaviour of isolated droplets subjected to a simple shear in a wide range of capillary numbers, confinement ratios and viscosity relations between the droplet and the carrier fluid. Simulations are performed using the colour-gradient lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), which is also adapted to handle power-law fluids. Findings on the Newtonian droplets in a Newtonian carrier fluid show that droplet deformation and orientation to the flow, i.e. tumbling, are enhanced with increasing confinement. Even more, with a larger viscosity ratio the rate of the deformation increases more significantly while the rate of tumbling becomes smaller. Noteworthy, the largest deformation is presented by droplets of the same viscosity as the matrix fluid. We also find that in a shear-thickening carrier fluid droplet deformation and tumbling are enhanced while they are reduced in a shear-thinning fluid. Additionally, with increasing confinement, the lowest capillary number a droplet breaks increases in the low viscosity ratio cases, contrary to the high viscosity ratio ones. At unity viscosity ratio this critical capillary number is slightly affected while droplets are found to break at a lower capillary number in a power-law carrier fluid. Simulations are performed to examine the behaviour of power-law droplets sheared in a Newtonian carrier fluid. The results are correlated well with the ones of the Newtonian droplets when the droplets obtain ellipsoidal shapes. However, upon slight deviation from the ellipsoidal shape the behaviour of power-law droplets differs substantially from their Newtonian counterparts.

Book excerpt: Colloids are ubiquitous in the food, medical, cosmetics, polymers, water purification, and pharmaceutical industries. The thermal, mechanical, and storage properties of colloids are highly dependent on their interface morphology and their rheological behavior. Numerical methods provide a convenient and reliable tool for the study of colloids. Accelerated Lattice Boltzmann Model for Colloidal Suspensions introduce the main building-blocks for an improved lattice Boltzmann–based numerical tool designed for the study of colloidal rheology and interface morphology. This book also covers the migrating multi-block used to simulate single component, multi-component, multiphase, and single component multiphase flows and their validation by experimental, numerical, and analytical solutions. Among other topics discussed are the hybrid lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for surfactant-covered droplets; biological suspensions such as blood; used in conjunction with the suppression of coalescence for investigating the rheology of colloids and microvasculature blood flow. The presented LBM model provides a flexible numerical platform consisting of various modules that could be used separately or in combination for the study of a variety of colloids and biological flow deformation problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have widespread applications in medical, electronical and mechanical devices. These devices are characterized by the smallest dimension which is at least one micrometer and utmost one millimeter. Rapid progress in the manufacture and utilization of these microdevices has been achieved in the last decade. Current manufacturing techniques of such devices and channels include surface silicon micromachining; bulk silicon micromachining; lithography; electrodeposition and plastic molding; and electrodischarge machining (EDM). In recent years, electrostatic, magnetic, electromagnetic and thermal actuators, valves, gears and diaphragms of dimensions of hundred microns or less have been fabricated successfully. Sensors have been manufactured that can detect pressure, temperature, flow rate and chemical composition in such channels. Physical effects such as electrokinetics, pressure gradient and capillarity become prominent for channels where the length scales are of the order of hundreds of micrometers. Also, at such length scales, the application of conventional numerical techniques that use macroscale equations to describe the phenomenon is questionable as the validity of the no-slip boundary condition depends on the ratio of the mean free path of the fluid molecules to the characteristic dimension of the problem (called the Knudsen number). Macroscale equations can only be applied if Knudsen number is of the order of 10−3 or less. In recent years, the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has emerged as a powerful tool that has replaced conventional macroscopic techniques like Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in many applications involving complex fluid flow. The LBM starts from meso- and microscopic Boltzmann's kinetic equation and can be used to determine macroscopic fluid dynamics. The origins of LBM can be drawn back to lattice gas cellular automata (LGCA) which lacked Galilean invariance and created statistical noise in the system. LBM on the other hand possesses none of these drawbacks of LGCA, and is easy to implement in complex geometries and can be used to study detailed microscopic flow behavior in complex fluids/fluid mixtures. Nor does it have any of the drawbacks of the Navier-Stokes solvers of implementing the slip boundary condition on the surface of a solid. It has also been found to be computationally fast and an alternative to Navier-Stokes equations. In this study, LBM is used to simulate two-fluid flows such as bubbles rising in a liquid, droplet impingement on a dry surface and creation of emulsions in microchannels. Simulation of disperse flows in a continuous medium using simple boundary condition methods lays the foundation of conducting complex simulations for the formation of droplets past a T-junction microchannel in the framework of this statistical method. Simulations in a T-junction illustrate the effect of the channel geometry, the viscosity of the liquids and the flow rates on the mechanism, volume and frequency of formation of these micron-sized droplets. Based on the interplay of viscous and surface tension forces, different shapes and sizes of droplets were found to form. The range of Capillary numbers simulated lies between 0.001[less than or equal to]Ca[less than or equal to]1.0. Different flow regimes are observed that can be described based on the Capillary number of the flow. A flow regime map that lists where droplet or parallel flow may occur has been created based on the flow rate ratio and Capillary number for a purely laminar flow in the microchannel.
