Book excerpt: This "how-to" manual teaches a useful skill in psychic sensing, called Directed Intuition. It involves merely shifting your awareness, much like you routinely shift attention to recall a memory. You can use the skill at any time, with eyes open and engaged in activities. The unique training method has proven effective both in classes and self-instruction. The author devised the concept in the mid 1960s after years of developing his own sensing ability by experiment, and by 69 began teaching classes for several years. This updated book (first edition 1970) has abundant examples of remarkable results and swift learning even some within a few minutes. The lessons are a third of the text. Book excerpt: Going deep behind the headlines about scandals in the Catholic Church, Jason Berry and Gerald Renner's Vows of Silence follows the staggering trail of evasions and deceit that leads directly to the Vatican -- and taints the legacy of Pope John Paul II. Based on more than six years of investigative reporting and hundreds of interviews, this book is a riveting account of Vatican cover-ups and the tumult they have caused in the church worldwide. Both a profound criticism and a wake-up call to reform by two Catholic writers, Vows of Silence reveals an agenda of top-down control under John Paul II and a hierarchy so obsessed with secrecy as to spawn disinformation. Vows of Silence is not a book about sexual abuse; it is a book about abuse of power, throughout the Vatican. The book cuts between the life story of Father Tom Doyle, who sacrificed a diplomatic career with the Vatican to seek justice for sex-abuse victims, and Father Marcial Maciel, an accused pedophile and founder of the militaristic religious order, the Legion of Christ. One of the most mysterious and powerful men in the Catholic Church, Maciel has built a network of priests, lay people, and elite prep schools in more than twenty countries, using the Legion as a fundraising machine to position himself as a favored figure of John Paul II. In addition to accusations against Maciel of sexual abuse and of using Legion money for his own extravagant lifestyle, many ex-Legionaries claim that the order uses mind-control techniques to isolate seminarians and even priests from their families. And yet, because he enjoyed the protection of Pope John Paul II and members of the Roman Curia, charges against Maciel for sexual misconduct -- all of which he denies -- were blocked in the Vatican court system. Drawing on in-depth interviews with Father Doyle and with ex-Legionaries who filed a canonical suit against Maciel, as well as interviews with Vatican insiders and an array of sources in Mexico, Ireland, Canada, and Australia, the authors provide a penetrating account of a hierarchy directly in conflict with its followers. With keen insight and scrupulous reporting, Vows of Silence is a powerful narrative that chronicles the church's struggle between orthodoxy and reform -- going straight to the heart of one of the world's largest power structures.

Book excerpt: When the struggle to save oil-soaked birds and restore blackened beaches left him feeling frustrated and helpless, John Francis decided to take a more fundamental and personal stand—he stopped using all forms of motorized transportation. Soon after embarking on this quest that would span two decades and two continents, the young man took a vow of silence that endured for 17 years. It began as a silent environmental protest, but as a young African-American man, walking across the country in the early 1970s, his idea of "the environment" expanded beyond concern about pollution and loss of habitat to include how we humans treat each other and how we can better communicate and work together to benefit the earth. Through his silence and walking, he learned to listen, and along the way, earned college and graduate degrees in science and environmental studies. The United Nations appointed him goodwill ambassador to the world’s grassroots communities and the U.S. government recruited him to help address the Exxon Valdez disaster. Was he crazy? How did he live and earn all those degrees without talking? An amazing human-interest story, with a vital message, Planetwalker is also a deeply personal and engaging coming-of-age odyssey—the positive experiences, the challenging times, the characters encountered, and the learning gained along the way.

Book excerpt: The Journey of The Silent Vow primarily takes an intelligent and healthy boy through the experience of a drug cult world where his physical and mental health, are taken for granted. There was nothing wrong with the life given to this boy, yet the feelings received from the consumption of drugs and alcohol were more important than the boys own safety. Through use and abuse, this boy forfeited his wellbeing as he subjects his life to trials and tribulations. Violations of the established legal system brought to life correctional facilities, psychiatric institutions, and reformatory schools. As he violated others he left passages and ways for others to violate him. As intelligent as he was he brought all his lessons to be learned into his existence. Although this story is told with 25 years of Hindsight, in those 25 years of psychological understandings lessons of how to cope and deal with life were included in every step of the story. If we as adults could only have had the wisdom when we were experiencing our lives as children our worlds would all be different places?
