However, as I rise each day, my skin feels as though it is pierced with the grim understanding that my husband might not make it home to me. I will never receive any medals, or have any ceremonies recognizing my brave and fearless acts of courage. That is okay, however, because the only thing I hope for, care for, and wait for is my soldier to once again wrap his arms around me. This is my life written from the heart that serves as a young military wife in the branch of service known as the aSilent Ranks.a

Book excerpt: Research regarding experiences of and advocacy for military service members is prevalent, particularly with the current returning influx to the United States. Similarly, research around civilian female experiences of and escape from intimate partner violence is abundant. However, there is severely limited literature on the experiences of military wives who have successfully left abusive marriages. This narrative research study focused on the stories of civilian women who left abusive marriages to a military service member. Eight women were interviewed as a part of this research. Their interviews were transcribed and analyzed using narrative analysis, which allowed the participants to generate stories in order to understand their experiences of leaving. Results yielded both individual themes centered on identity, voice, and meaning-making of the experience, and systemic themes centered on military influences and structural barriers to reporting. Suggestions for future research and implications of this study are discussed, and recommendations for counselors and counselor educators are provided.

Book excerpt: THE SILENT SUNSET is a biography of Sirayo Yona Nyeko, born and raised in colonial Uganda, during the middle of the twentieth century. With the advent of the brutal regime of Idi Amin in Uganda, 1971-79, Sirayo sought sanctuary in his own innocence and his faith in mankind, a faith that would be sorely tested with ultimately tragic consequences. His story is just one of the over 300,000 victims of Amin's tyranny, one of the most evil despots of modern history. This book is unique in that it breaks away from the current trend of writing about Amin and instead depicts the brutal real life consequences of the dictator's rule. A first-hand account of one of the victims of Idi Amin. The news about my father first appeared as a headline in the Sunday Times of London in June 1977. The news altered mine and my family's life forever.....

Book excerpt: This book offers a ground soldier's perspective on life and death on the front lines, providing details of day-to-day operations and German army life. Wounded five times and awarded numerous decorations, Bidermann fought in the Crimea and the siege of Sebastopol, participated in the battles in the forests to the south of Leningrad, and found himself in the Courland Pocket at the end of the war. He shares his impressions of Russian POWs, of peasants struggling to survive the war, and of his fellow German soldiers. He also recounts the humiliation of surrender and offers a sober glimpse of life in a Soviet gulag. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
