He has made me perceive the scenes of the poet's verse more nearly than I had hitherto supposed could be done. The men of that day were alive. Their language was not a "dead language." Professor Peck, in his "Trimalchio's Dinner, has achieved something like a vital translation of the Latin; and Dr. Miller has gone far in the same direction in rendering Greek forms in modern moods and measures. Indeed, my feeling is that he might have gone much farther than he did, notably in the use of a modern vernacular. No doubt, purists would have complained; but, if by its employment one rolls away the mist which lies between us and those young men who walked the hills of Sicily two thousand years ago, pedantic objections will not much matter.
