Book excerpt: "'After a day on the moors, stubbles, or a woodland day, I like to take up a book beside my fire and read of other good long days past and gone. Such I have tried to make this volume.' -- BB First compiled by BB in 1946, he aimed to create a book which was largely composed of the best descriptive writings on the sport of shooting. These pages are packed with evocative and stirring passages for sportsmen to enjoy after a day out and during the long winter evenings. The extracts chosen represent some of the greatest writers from Richard Jefferies to the poet John Masefield. BB himself, one of the most evocative writers on the countryside, is well represented in both his writings and his fine scraperboard illustrations. "
Book Synopsis Shooting Victoria by : Paul Thomas Murphy
Download or read book Shooting Victoria written by Paul Thomas Murphy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-10 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During her long reign, Queen Victoria was the target of no fewer than eight assassination attempts. In seven of these cases her life was saved by poor marksmanship or misfiring weaponry, but one assailant managed to strike her with a finely wrought cane. Remarkably, all eight of her attackers lived to tell their tales, and were variously incarcerated in asylums, deported to Australia, or in a few cases eventually released into society again. Paul Thomas Murphy shows how these obscure would-be assassins effected a change in history. Their attacks on Victoria galvanised her to face them down by presenting a more public face than her forebears, thereby laying the groundwork for the monarchy as we know it today. SHOOTING VICTORIA opens up a new window onto Victorian England. In exploring contemporary attitudes to madness, crime and criminality, it reveals a wealth of little-known and often surprising aspects of 19th-century British society and monarchy.

Book excerpt: Mad old colonels who took their trousers off before going elephant hunting, women poachers with terriers sewn into their underskirts, duck shooters chasing their quarry in helicopters - here they all in their vast and until now, long forgotten, eccentricity. Shooting's Strangest Days is a unique collection of stories about the mad, the bad and the truly dangerous to know from more than two hundred years of sporting shooting. Covering everything from delightfully dotty Royals - like George V, who always went shooting with a gun loader deliberately chosen because he looked exactly like the king - to obscure French chamois hunters, South American crocodile stranglers, Russian secret service beaters and suicidal Himalayan goat guides.

Book Synopsis England's Last War Against France by : Colin Smith
Download or read book England's Last War Against France written by Colin Smith and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2010-11-25 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genuinely new story of the Second World War - the full account of England's last war against France in 1940-42. Most people think that England's last war with France involved point-blank broadsides from sailing ships and breastplated Napoleonic cavalry charging red-coated British infantry. But there was a much more recent conflict than this. Under the terms of its armistice with Nazi Germany, the unoccupied part of France and its substantial colonies were ruled from the spa town of Vichy by the government of Marshal Philip Petain. Between July 1940 and November 1942, while Britain was at war with Germany, Italy and ultimately Japan, it also fought land, sea and air battles with the considerable forces at the disposal of Petain's Vichy French. When the Royal Navy sank the French Fleet at Mers El-Kebir almost 1,300 French sailors died in what was the twentieth century's most one-sided sea battle. British casualties were nil. It is a wound that has still not healed, for undoubtedly these events are better remembered in France than in Britain. An embarrassment at the time, France's maritime massacre and the bitter, hard-fought campaigns that followed rarely make more than footnotes in accounts of Allied operations against Axis forces. Until now.
